Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a massage therapist during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Ask your massage therapist if they offer consultations over a video chat or phone call. If they do, ask them any questions you have about the upcoming appointment. For example, ask what precautions they're taking to keep both parties safe due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You might also want to ask if they offer gift cards that can be used at a later time, remote services or even virtual lessons for you or members in your household.

Also, ask how they plan to handle payments, and whether you can pay through an online or digital method instead of with physical cash or credit cards.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a massage therapist when social distancing?

Because massage therapy requires person-to-person contact, social distancing is not possible. However, you can ask massage therapists near you if they can offer remote services instead, such as lessons for you and your partner.

If you don’t want to book an appointment with a massage therapist right now, but you will in the future when the pandemic subsides, consider paying your massage therapist in advance or tipping them anyway. You can also ask about buying a gift card for future work.

Do massage therapists offer remote or virtual services?

Ask massage therapists near you about the possibility of remote services. You might come across profiles that state the therapist is offering remote services such as lessons and techniques you can do on your own, with a friend or with a partner.

Does a massage therapist need to enter my home?

Many massage therapists operate their businesses out of their own homes, though some offer mobile massages and come to your home. You should ask the massage therapist where they typically operate and if they are making any special accommodations to better observe the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing

If you must cancel or delay your massage therapy appointment due to COVID-19, consider asking the therapist if they can offer massage techniques or lessons via video chat, email or some other digital format. You can also ask if it's possible to buy gift cards that can be used at a later time.

Can I use digital payments to pay for a massage?

Many massage therapists accept digital payments through Venmo, Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle and other online platforms. Even businesses that do not typically accept digital payments may be changing their methods to practice social distancing. Just check with your massage therapist before the appointment to see how they handle payments.

How can I find out if a massage therapist is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of an essential COVID-19 service provider varies from state to state and city to city. To see which businesses are considered essential in your area, visit the official government website of your state or city.

You can also read CISA’s publication on identifying critical workers to find out more information on a national level. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

How long is a Swedish massage?

A Swedish massage can range from 45 minutes to 120 minutes or more. A longer massage allows the massage therapist to give you an all-over massage and then circle back to focus on areas in need of extra bodywork. Some massage therapists recommend that your first massage be longer to give the therapist time to learn more about your health and any injuries or pain before providing you with a healing massage. The longer your massage, the more it will cost. Swedish massage is made up of five body strokes designed to relax, heal, improve circulation and maintain health. The techniques are called effleurage, friction, petrissage, tapotement and vibration. During Swedish massage, all parts of the body are addressed, and the client is often unclothed and draped with a cloth. Swedish massage is proven to be beneficial to mental and physical health, and has been shown by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine to boost the immune system.

Is hot stone massage safe in pregnancy?

If you’re ready for relaxation and relief from pregnancy pains, prenatal massage may be a great healing option. Once your prenatal care provider has approved you for pregnancy massage, look for a licensed massage therapist who also has training and certification in prenatal massage techniques.

The safety of hot stone massage during pregnancy depends on several factors including the stage of your pregnancy and where on the body the hot stones are applied. The massage therapist should avoid raising your core temperature or using hot stones on the abdomen. When in doubt, talk to your prenatal care provider.

How much are pregnancy massages?

Prenatal massages can be a safe and therapeutic way to alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy. A prenatal massage can promote a sense of relaxation and well-being for expectant mothers. The national average cost for a pregnancy massage ranges between $70 and $90. The cost of a pregnancy massage will vary depending on where you live, the length of the massage, and the massage therapist. Typically, the longer a massage, the higher the cost. Some massage therapists charge the same rate per minute, regardless of massage length, while others charge less per minute for longer appointments. Here are two examples of average prenatal massage costs:

  • Therapist A: Offers a 30-minute massage for $45, 45 minutes for $60, 60 minutes for $75, 75 minutes for $90 and 90 minutes for $105.
  • Therapist B: offers a 30-minute massage for $45, a 60-minute massage for $85, a 90-minute massage for $115 and a 120-minute massage for $145.

How much does it cost to get a Swedish massage?

Having a Swedish massage can promote relaxation, relieve stress and help you feel great. The national average price range to hire a massage therapist is $70-$90, with prices varying based on length of massage and location. Costs may be higher for a Swedish massage if the client would like services in their home or office, as the massage therapist has to transport their massage table and account for transportation costs. Geographic location can also affect costs, as regions with a lower cost of living and a lower cost to do business will have lower rates than pricey areas such as San Francisco or New York. Here are some examples of average Swedish massage costs:

  • $50 for a 60-minute massage in North Texas.
  • $55 for a 60-minute massage in Central Texas.
  • $60 for a 60-minute massage in New Jersey.
  • $100 for a 60-minute massage in San Francisco Bay Area.
Reviews for Independence male massage therapists
Thumbtack Customer
CHRIS WAS AMAZING! From the very beginning, just in communication and finding a date and time that worked. He was very accommodating, considering we were from out of town, my husband being here to train three shifts on a massive machine, only he ended up doing the majority of the work when there are supposed to be, at minimum, three men working: one to operate, one to shaft and one to inspect, and three is a low number! There should at least be two inspectors! He was working over 12 hours a day, coming back not only exhausted, but in pain. When the machine breaks out, or there are issues with the formers, miters, hot melt or you name it, my husband has to get on his hands and knees and crawl in, through and around the machine as best he can. My husband is not a small fella: broad shoulders, meaty with some weight on him, so doing this is a challenge in and of itself, the way he has to contort his body. Let's not forget standing on concrete all those hours on completely flat feet. So I thought I would try to find someone who would come to him considering he was working 9am to 9pm at the time. There were two people to choose from and the choice was easy because the reviews on Chris were phenomenal! And his price was cheaper, which was a bonus, but not the reason I chose him!!! My only hesitation was that he was a male and my husband had only ever had one other massage which was by a female. I explained this to Chris and he said he would do everything he could to ensure my husband was comfortable and didn't feel awkward. So, we booked the appointment for 9:30, I figure just enough time for him to get back to the hotel and shower. Things didn't go as planned; he worked from 7am to 7pm but Chris already had another booking so we kept our original 9:30 time slot. My husband ended up being later than I thought he would be and was just leaving to get dinner at 9pm. I let Chris know and he said it wasn't a problem and he was just headed our way now. I didn't realize he had sent me another message letting me know he was here in the lobby relaxing, for us to take our time and to let him know when we were ready. After reading that i quickly cleaned up (I had just begun to eat after getting my husband and two grandkids settled). I told him we were ready for him, and kids being kids, the grandkids just had to wait in the hall. Thankfully my husband was too tired to notice, since this was a surprise! When Chris arrived the door was already open (the grandkids) so I walked him in and introduced him to my husband (who was lounging on the bed watching tv). He didn't know what to think since he didn't see the table at first...he thought "She's bringing another man into our bedroom??" Hahahahaha forgetting the grandkids are here! HEY! We aren't that old, we're young grandparents in our forties! Then he saw the table and relaxed thinking "massage" and was happy with his surprise. He was so impressed with the massage Chris gave him that he forgot to be uncomfortable about it being a male giving a massage as opposed to a female. He raved about Chris all day Sunday and said it was a shame we have to go back now that we found him. Maybe one more before we leave Saturday wouldn't hurt? Maybe for myself too? At his prices you sure can't beat it! He's a lovely person too, we had a nice chat after. He has a calming and soothing voice, apparently amazing hands, but more importantly he has the education of how to use and manipulate his hands to help you feel your best. There's a difference between a masseuse and a massage therapist, a HUGE difference! In addition to doing this "on the side" he does is as his "job" at a Chiropractors office. Trust me, the man knows his stuff or a Chiropractor would never hire him! And then he gives up evenings and weekends to do the same thing, you might think money, right? No, when you meet him you know right away that isn't it at all! His calling is this, to do his part in "healing", taking pain away and helping someone feel better. It's his passion, which might explain his pricing; he's not out to get rich, he's the helping and healing type and he's very good at it which means he takes it seriously because it is important to him that when your time is up you feel better than when he arrived. As i mentioned, we chatted for a bit and he shared a couple of personal stories with us which reaffirmed my feelings about him! To those who may be wondering, no, he did not preach self help, holistic, herbal or anything. He didn't preach anything, he just gave my husband an AMAZING massage (probably somewhat therapeutic or reflexology), we had a chat and he was on his way. He was extremely accommodating and flexible, prompt (even early), personable but not certainly not over the top, well spoken and somewhat soft spoken and a gentleman. Hire Chris just once and I'll bet you won't ever hire anyone else!!! The entire experience is one we won't forget! Thank you, Chris! Monique & Rob Herriman
