We've been remodeling our home for the past 2 months and Kaleb, by far, has been the most professional person we've worked with. He was on time, covered all the furniture before cutting out circles in the ceiling for pot lights. Brought a shop vac and swept the entire area. Outstanding service.

Jose and his team did a great job. He was flexible with when I needed the work done and sheet rocked my entire basement very quickly and with great quality. Clean up was quick and done well also. The reviews that he has had speak for themselves and is why I chose Jose to hang the sheetrock in my basement. Job well done!

As most here can attest finding a trustworthy, professional and reasonably priced contractor is a coin flip sometimes. Found Rojas Contracting via this website and all of their reviews were outstanding so I decided to get a quote from them. Their quote amongst the lowest so we decided to go with them. For the entire two week job of building a privacy fence around a 1/2 acre yard they were completely professional, attentive to detail and changes that we wanted to make and even decided to redo a couple of small areas that they were not satisfied with and we had not even noticed. They cleaned up very well after the job was complete and we plan on using them for future remodeling and construction jobs as well. Cannot think of anything that was even partially negative with the experience and we would highly recommend them to anyone that has a construction or remodeling need.

I hired Marcus to install a patio door in my new house. He was knowledgeable, trustworthy and worked very hard to get the job done and done right. He was very patient when I faced a couple road bumps and helpful during the whole process. One on the best people I've hired with following up before and after the job was done. Would recommend him for anyone needing some remodeling work around the house!

The work was done so well I added the basement to a project that included the kitchen, living room, bathroom and even resurfacing the bath tub. The team that serviced my home was always professional, listened to my vision and met and exceeded my expectations. TMC is now my "go to" contractor for home repairs.

I highly recommend Zimmer Construction LLC for any of your projects. I had a few contractors come out and give me estimates on remodeling my kitchen. I choose Zimmer Construction because Roy was full knowledge with giving me ideas and the pricing was fair. The crew was very professional removed everything to the bare studs and the flooring removed to the subflooring. I was a very indecisive on what exactly I wanted done with my kitchen. I gave Roy ideas and he added more with great detail making it stand out more. Due to the changing of project ideas, pricing changed as well to get me a look that I just love. It cost a little more for the changes I made but they were well worth it. Roy and the crew are professional and detail oriented. He came in with the adequate tools and materials to get the job done right and in a timely manner. They handled everything from the flooring, cabinets, drywall, tile work, electric, plumbing, trim work and painting. Every project I had them do was done well above average. Great company to work with and I couldn’t be more pleased with the work.

We reached out to five contractors all of which said they could not start until July. None impressed us at all. David then gives us a bid by email within 48 hrs. and then we meet and discuss scope of project and set a date for start. We never expected him to work solely on this project from start to finish but that is exactly what he delivered. Timely arrival times arranged in advance with us, excellent communication throughout even while working in our home, touching base, asking questions, clarifying details. David exceeded our expectations and found a window that we only discussed verbally on the first meeting and it looked fabulous when in place. We will work with David again on multiple projects because he shows integrity with the quality of his work as well as shows up when he says he is coming to start work. He finished exactly on schedule with having to arrange electrical contractors. We are still working on other projects and looking forward to hi, assisting us with those. Lana Lee

John Lynn is a perfectionist when it comes to his work. He has been doing repairs and remodeling (painting, tiling, plumbing, etc.) at my home for quiet some time and I have been extremely happy with his work. He's polite, honest and of high integrity. In fact, I felt very comfortable giving him the key to my house so he could work while I was out. I would highly recommend John for any kind of home repair or remodeling. You will get quality work for a very reasonable price!

I was responsible for the remodeling of a commercial space to fit our store standards/look. Matt took great notes during our original meeting at the space, was engaged in the plan discussion, executed the plan flawlessly, and yet was also quick to offer advice/improvements. He's very open to feedback, flexible with changes, extremely accommodating, and a great communicator. I was unable to be at the location during the remodel, but he was quick to send progress pictures and always willing to go the extra mile to ensure I liked the direction and look we were achieving. Anyone who hires Matt for their job would be doing themselves a favor, as the peace of mind of a job well done is priceless.

I have called on this company several times and have always been satisfied along with my clients. They responded in a very timely manner and could take on all of the different projects my clients needed done under one roof for an easy and smooth transaction for me and my clients. Means alot when everyone is so busy these days to not have a hassel of meeting different contractors with inconvient time frames. One phone call to a one stop professional company. Resonable pricing and licensed and insured too. Call them first. You won't be disappointed.

We had a window well that flooded water into our basement and we were under a lot of stress trying to figure out what to do with it. The last time something like that happen we had a contractor come out and dry out the carpet but leave the pad wet and basically ruined our pad. I was referred to yeti restoration and they came out and were very professional gave me a good price and could do the work the same day to prevent further damage. I actually trusted this company to be be there with my wife and kids without me there. That says a lot! I refer yeti restoration to everybody now!

Mike and I had a little miscommunication that was resolved. He was very professional with handling my frustration. I have been remodeling my home and have been dealing with one issue after another and honestly he did not deserve the review I left. I left a 1 star review out of anger and spite which was handled accordingly. I want to apologize for the review previously and I WANT EVERYONE to know his gentlemen is far from a 1 star review. Thank you again!

I had a horrible experience with a contractor who did not complete his hired projects and the ones he did complete were shoddy (to say the least). Jordan came to bid on new remodels and repairs from the previous contractor. I didn't hire Jordan, NOT because of him; but because my husband had hired someone else which he found himself. Since, I was the one who hired the horrible contractor; I didn't put up too much of a fight. If my husband had had the time to talk with Jordan, I'm sure there would've been more of a discussion on who to hire. Jordan was professional and did not make me feel as if I was an idiot when he saw some of the previous contractor's work. His bid was not overpriced compared to the other contractors, especially having to clean up another person's mess. He did well with communication, always responded promptly. That is HUGE for me!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
