I've hired previous lawn care professionals on thumbtack but Kev's Lawn Care was a step above all the others. He arrived with some very high level commercial equipment and explained in detail his process for leaf removal. The service was meticulous and fast. All my future lawn service needs will be through Kev's Lawn Care. A+

Tim Vogel did a great job for me with clearing away all of the brush and cleaning up my patio area. Then he went on to improve the way everything looked by adding mulch to the area and trimming the trees. Couldn't have asked for more!

Prompt reply to our inquiry on a Friday, within minutes of submitting a request. Out the next day, Saturday for in-person interview, and estimate of tree removal service. Completed work removing 5 trees, and trimming an old Oak tree on Tuesday in the sweltering heat advisory. Excellent work, & professional all the way! Cleaned up the area nicely. Priced competitively! Will definitely be using their services in the future.

I appreciated Adam's quick communication, he was very friendly and accommodating with answers to my questions and I felt his fees were reasonable. I also liked the immediate "yes we can do that" response when I asked about future leaf removal requirements. Very helpful! Thanks

Great work from Chop it & Haul it. Clint helped us out by removing some brush we needed removed from our yard and did it at a fair price in one load. But he went over and above by raking up where the brush was, removing some big branches from one of our many recent rains and removing some rotting wood we hadn't noticed in the firewood pile. Will definitely use again when we remove the rest of the brush and cut down a couple of trees.

Chad Braton responded to my request for a quote very quickly and gave me a very reasonable quote for my tree removal and grinding of four stumps. The crew came out this morning and removed the tree in a very quick and efficient manner. Their clean up and attention to detail was just outstanding. If I ever need another tree removed they will be the 1st company I call. The stump grinder is due to arrive in the next 2 to 5 days and I have confidence they their work will be just as good as the tree removal crew. I can not thank them enough for the outstanding job they did at my residence.

Josh of Outlaw Tree Service was proactive, professional and did quality work. I had heard horror stories about stump removal from other friends and family and had been putting off having the two small stumps removed for years. I had even tried to retain people in the past; they were "no shows" after having previously agreed to show up to take a look at the job. After completely removing the stumps and the resulting chips, Josh laid down topsoil and air dried the entire front lawn with a blower to remove small debris and evidence of equipment tire tracks.

Very friendly and work was done with full cleanup of my yard in one day on a 60' monster maple tree removal. This company did not use the high pressure like some of the other companies I contacted. Can't go wrong with this company.

Jeremy was professional and very knowledgeable. He made me a great deal to pick up leaves. Although the job took longer than possibly he expected, he didn't charge me any more. I was really happy with the results. Other leaf removal companies used leaf blowers in my flower beds but this company was more careful and actually even removed some broken statuary I had left there. They straightened my side yard while raking and throughout the yard I would have a hard time finding a leaf on the ground! I would recommend this company because they are fair, work hard and do an excellent job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
