We needed the gutters cleaned and downspouts checked, fairly urgently. Chris came out the next morning, arriving earlier than the appointment time, which was great. He was very professional, explained what they would do, and patiently answered all of my questions. Also, they are insured. Many gutter cleaners are not. He even called back the next day to come by and caulk some gutters that we noticed were leaking at the joints. They did an excellent job! I will be recommending them to friends.

Kevin responded to a request about lawn mowing but mentioned he did gutter cleaning as well so we hired him to do that first. He not only did a great job with the gutters but also nailed in the spots where they were coming off the house. I would definitely hire him again!

I have never seen better painting done inside a home than what i recently got from B&J, it is excellent!!! They take pride in their work that is obvious and they are very respectful of your home and make sure that it is left clean. They also did lawn work and gutter work for us and we are extremely pleased with the outcome of their work on that. We definitely will be using B&J Painting for future painting needs and to redo our front lawn.

I couldn't be happier with the process from start to finish. Angela was on top of the procurement aspect of things (i.e. quote, timeline, etc) and Rodrigo spent 2 1/2 days working through the rain/mud to get our fence up over the weekend. The attention to detail and quality of work is remarkable, and we've already had three neighbors requesting his contact information. I've literally had 5 home improvement projects this year, and they were, hands down, the most professional, transparent, and hard working.

I worked with Kerry on a job that involved gutter cleaning, gutter guard installation, and minor gutter repair that involved the installation of flashing and gutter hangers. Kerry was very professional throughout the entire process. Kerry responded promptly, provided a competitive quote, and completed the job in a timely fashion with good quality and attention to detail. I recommend Kerry and look forward to working with him again.

I was very impressed with the work that Mark did today! Prior to the job, there were a number of text messages, emails, and phone calls to make sure everything was ready for the job. This helped build my confidence in the work that he was about to do. He picked up the door from the department store first thing in the morning. Because of all the communication, he immediately knew that the door on hold was not the correct one. With a quick phone call to me, we were able to get the situation resolved. He explained the work that he was doing along the way and made sure I had a voice when an unexpected situation came up. I also appreciated that he did not take an hour lunch break. With the incoming storm, he worked to get the door installed and 2 coats of paint before the rain. I already have him booked for another job. Thanks Mark for your professionalism!

Mike Flood was referred to me by my realtor. I am a real estate investor and was in the process of selling a house when a storm with high winds came and pulled back some of the roofing on the house. In addition, the rain was now blowing under the roofing and leaking in the house. I contacted Mike and explained the situation, and that I needed help right away. He was able to come to the house, assess the situation, and give me a quote with a timetable on getting the job done, which included replacing the roof as well as repairing the leak and repainting the room to the satisfaction of the buyer. The work was quick and professional and within the time restraints, which meant overtime on his part. Mike Flood Remodeling is a company I will continue to use.

John did a phenomenal job keeping me up to date during the project. We had quite a few days in a row of rain and John did what he could to ensure we didn’t have any further leaks during that time. He’s my roofer from now on.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why is it important to clean your gutters?

Rain gutters, those easily-forgotten trenches that hang off the edge of your roof, protect your roof, walls and foundation from excess rainwater. When they get clogged with leaves, sticks and other wind-blown debris, they can no longer direct water away from your walls and foundation, and may become homes for pests and insects. They also become heavy enough to pull away from the house, preventing proper rainwater drainage and spoiling the appearance of your home. Experts recommend inspecting and cleaning your gutters twice a year, once in spring and once in fall, as part of your regular landscaping schedule. Gutter cleaning and maintenance is a fairly easy DIY job for some homeowners, especially on one-story homes. However, professional gutter cleaners have ladders tall enough to safely reach rain gutters, as well as the necessary tools to clean out the downspouts. Most gutter cleaning professionals can also make any necessary quick repairs.

How much does it cost to have gutters cleaned?

Professional gutter cleaning and maintenance should be done once or twice a year to remove debris and check for damage to the roof and gutter. The national average cost for rain gutter cleaners ranges from $100 to $130. A number of factors affect the costs, including the combined length of the gutters, the size of the house, the location of the gutters, and any risks posed to the professional cleaner. Some companies based their cost estimates on the linear square footage of the gutters; for example, 200 linear square feet of gutters on a standard, single-story ranch-style home costs an average of $125 to clean. The cost goes up for second- and third-story gutters and those in hard-to-reach places, like a roof with an unusually steep pitch. Expect to pay at least $100 more than standard prices if cleaning your home’s gutters requires extra safety precautions. Because spring and fall are gutter cleaners’ busiest seasons, some gutter cleaning and maintenance companies offer discounts during summer and winter months.

How often do you need to clean your gutters?

Gutter cleaning and maintenance is an important part of keeping up a home. Not only are clogged gutters unsightly, they can also lead to water damage in the house’s walls and roof. The best way to prevent that is to clean your gutters at least twice a year — experts recommend making it part of your spring cleaning and fall landscaping schedules. In the fall, trees lose their leaves and, in the spring, release seedpods and flower petals, all of which tend to end up in rain gutters. It’s a good idea to also have a professional gutter cleaner clear out your downspouts, too; clogged downspouts can make gutters backup and overflow.
