I had a leaking outside hose bib. Aundre arrived on time last week and made sure I really needed a replacement. Sure enough, the old one had a break in it. He removed it and went to the store to get the replacement. When he returned, he finished the repair in no time. So far, so good. Aundre took care in his diagnosis and in his repair. The price was very fair, too. I'd recommend him to anyone needing plumbing work. Thank you, Aundre!

Galen, did an amazing job. He was quick to respond. Didn't rush through and he was very knowledgeable about anything and everything I asked. He took the time to explain our sprinkler system to me and even set it up for us. I called him for a sprinkler head repair and he went above and beyond to check all of them to be sure they were working and adjusted them accordingly. I HIGHLY recommend Galen! Don't hesitate to call he does an amazing job!!! Thank you for all those who posted reviews that helped me to make my decision easier.

Fantastic work. Had a big crack above the fireplace that needed repair. He figured out what caused it to crack in the first place (no screws), fixed that and then fixed the wall itself and painted. Very professional and I would hire again if needed. Thanks Jose!

Thank You Multitasker! I was in a spot, with broken lawnmower and yard overgrown from all the rain. David came out right away and gave a reasonable quote. Then out the next day to do the job. Very consciousness and the yard looked great. Even offered to haul my riding mower the repair shop. Thanks, again!

Rick did a great job and it was a fair price. He sent me pictures of the job since I couldn’t be home while he was doing the leaf cleanup....then I paid him thru PayPal. Very convenient....no need to miss work or drive home to meet them. My neighbors were home and saw their work....and also hired them. I would recommend 100%.

Mike responded very quick to my inquiry and was willing to try to make it the same day. He explained everything to me based on what he could see on the photo's I provided to him and he sent his best guy out Russ to finish the job. Russ was on time and walked me through step by step on what he was doing and why to find the real problem with our foundation/water issue. I was quoted crazy foundation repairs and was told all the extra things that really wasn't needed to be done by other company's. Rescue 1 is honest and trustworthy!! Best home repair experience ever!! Highly recommend!!

I had a Great experience with Jo Jo's. He was helpful, considerate, and did an EXCELLENT job putting together our furniture! The pricing was fantastic, too! I was nervous hiring off of the internet, as I was going to be home alone when he got there, but as soon as he arrived, my mind was put at ease. He was professional, kind, and respectful. I would hire them over and over again, and I will if we ever need their services again! I would also highly recommend them to anyone. Very pleased with my choice!!

I hired Marcus to install a patio door in my new house. He was knowledgeable, trustworthy and worked very hard to get the job done and done right. He was very patient when I faced a couple road bumps and helpful during the whole process. One on the best people I've hired with following up before and after the job was done. Would recommend him for anyone needing some remodeling work around the house!

David was excellent in every respect: on-time, courteous, friendly, knowledgeable, good advice, quick troubleshoot and fix both of a breaker and outlet issue, final cleanup. Everything went as expected and his rates are reasonable. He charged exactly what he quoted even though he had to get into the attic to troubleshoot. Thanks for making this home repair a pleasant experience, and for leaving my home even better than when you found it!

The work was done so well I added the basement to a project that included the kitchen, living room, bathroom and even resurfacing the bath tub. The team that serviced my home was always professional, listened to my vision and met and exceeded my expectations. TMC is now my "go to" contractor for home repairs.

Anthony was awesome helping me locate the doorbell transformer which was mounted in the finished ceiling above a random smoke detector. He came up with several ways to repair, was thourough in his approach, and cleanly opened up only the minimum amount of space and replaced it. I would certainly hire again.

We recently bought a house and needed to change 3 toilets and attach bidets. Austin's quote was reasonable and he was very prompt to respond. He replaced the 3 toilets, attached bidets and also fixed some of the water leakage issues we had. Pros - Response time is quick, was able to fix our plumbing issues, price is reasonable, professional to talk to , has an understanding of the job. If you have a time constraint, let him know beforehand so he can bring in help beforehand. Cons - He will need to carry the most common additional parts with him which may be needed during repair works so that he can avoid trip to homedepot in between. Our bath tiles were not levelled and additional shims were needed to level it out and i highly appreciate him going to homedepot and get those, but i am assuming this may be a common issue in some of the houses.

The plumbing professional who worked on our repairs did a great job on the upstairs bathtub drain. We also had a floor drain in the basement that was repaired but my wife did not correctly describe the problem to the professional. I let the company know and they rescheduled and fixed the problem in no time at all!

Responsive and good value for work but wish attention to detail a bit stronger. We had several areas that needed repair and one would have been overlooked had I not been home and shingles were left on grass after job and even though found them same day they killed our grass - we have two spots were grass is completely burned out.

Everything from my initial conversation to the work being completed was fantastic. They responded right away to my requests and came out on a Sunday morning to fix my problem without any extra fees. The man that came out, Keith, was friendly, professional, honest and hardworking. I've never used Bob Hamilton before, but plan to again in the future. Thank you!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
