Steve installed a new faucet in my kitchen along with a new soap dispenser and new sink strainer and garbage disposal flange. He did an excellent job working hard throughout the job, but if one thing went slightly wrong it was that during the process of securing the job, he asked me to send him a message with my address, scope of job and contact info. By "text", he meant a message to his cell phone. I thought all communication went through the Thumbtack app. Anyway, in the beginning, I had asked for a bid to install a new faucet, soap dispenser water lines and shut off valves. Steve had bid on that job. I was providing everything except the shutoff valves. Later, I went to Lowes to pick up the materials needed. While there, the Lowes associate asked if I wanted matching sink strainer and garbage disposal flange. I said that I did. When Steve later asked for the text mentioned above, I clearly stated that the job included the installation of a garbage disposal flange and sink strainer. Steve indicated had he seen that, his price would have been more. It seemed like the installation of the latter two items were the worst part of the job and made Steve very "frustrated". The more frustrated he became, the more difficult the job was. I went in and try to assist and together we got it done. Having known it was not in the original scope and knowing Steve was out on the job when I made the change, I added some money to what I had agreed to pay know I too, was partially to blame for the mishap.

Jose is an artist. He took a short ceiling, unfinished space in Overland Park and turned it into a room that we will use for years to come. He is a very friendly, professional and punctual worker that seems to never tire. He answered all on my questions patiently and improved my original design. I would clearly recommend Mr. Gomez for any size drywall job.

We had a major remodel done by Rescue 1. We had the wall removed between the kitchen and living room. They replaced the ceiling, walls, flooring, cabinets, plumbing, and electrical. While they were doing the demo, they discovered we had a bad carpenter ant infestation. If they wouldn’t have been doing such a thorough job, I hate to think of how long it would have taken us to discover the damage. If you are looking for quality work, I would recommend them to anyone planning a major remodel project. They will not cut corners nor use sub-standard materials. They made my dream kitchen a reality.

It was important to John to do a good job on the tasks I gave him. He didn't cut corners, and worked his (you know what) off. He built me a walkway that required a LOT of stone cutting and he seemed to enjoy that work. He also restained some kitchen cabinets. I always seem to have things that need fixing, and John is versatile. He knows how to do a lot of different thing. I'll call him first next time I need something.

To this day we are pleased with the work provided by S&W Construction after our church fire. We get lots of compliments from visitors to this day. After a devastating church fire, S&W renovated and remodeled our church from the floor to the ceiling. The sanctuary ceiling was destroyed by the fire department as they put out the fire so it was very cold for them to work but they worked in the cold winter months non stop. They fixed it so we were able to have church services in the renovated and remodeled lower level while they worked or the two upper levels. They added two restrooms and an office. Restored our sanctuary, balcony, replaced windows and doors, carpeting, painting, new furnaces, new lighting, pews, new choir stand, new pulpit, kitchen and setup and installed appliances, etc. We later hired S&W Construction for sidewalk replacement and driveway reproach replacement. We will hire them again.

We had Matt cut out a large opening in the wall between our living room and kitchen. We had him put in a granite bar where the opening is. It looks fantastic! He had some really creative ideas on how to make it look great considering it was a support wall. His rates are extremely reasonable too!! I would recommend him to everyone I know. His work is outstanding.

Alex was a real pleasure to work with. He is a very experienced carpenter as well as very talented in many other areas. He listened to my design ideas and helped turn my 1980’s kitchen into a wow. And I am one picky person! He is responsible, dependable, personable and honest. He is definitely a guy you can leave your house keys with. I will definitely use him again on future projects.

I've been able to ask Shandy for advice in a few different areas in my house. She does a wonderful job asking the right questions and giving great ideas that match my own style. She's been really helpful with showing me different websites to look at for ideas on wallpaper, rugs, plants, and more. I also appreciate that she is cognizant of my budget - never pushing ideas or decor that is way out of my price range. But, she's also taught me that it is always worth it to invest in something you love and know you will use often. Overall, I highly recommend using Shandy for any interior design advice/help!

I was in the process of vacating my 2 bed, 2 bath apartment and needed a thorough cleaning of the whole apartment that included my carpet. Gina arrived on a Saturday morning, 15 mins early and worked tirelessly for more than 4 hours without any break. She worked on some really tough stains in the kitchen and the bathroom. She was very professional throughout the process and I was very happy with the end result. I would highly recommend her for any kind of cleaning services.

Megan was able to assist us with a last-minute design of over 10,000 sq ft of office space. The building needed to be completely overhauled, with new paint, flooring, ceilings, bathrooms and lighting. She quickly pulled together a color palette and rushed to get things finalized before the painters began. She was incredibly knowledgeable, easy to work with, and probably saved our company a lot of time and money during the renovation! She delivered on all aspects of the process, and was responsive to our many questions along the way.

She came to house with ideas based on the pictures I had sent her. I loved her ideas and choices and can't wait to start implementing them! I would highly recommend Cate.

We want members and guest to feel welcome as they enter our doors and through out the service. Linda arrived promptly and was professional. We are in the process of completing all of the ideas that were recommended. Our experience with Linda Smith went well and we "Thank" ,her and we" Thank you", Thumbtack!

I found Brett on Craigslist. Not expecting much out of a 24 year old I went ahead and hired him to do some tile work in my kitchen. Day 1 he was early and proper. Very organized and clean. He got it done in just two days and it looked fantastic. I Have used him several times since then and he never disappoints. Very professional guy and company!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
