My project involved the installation of about 220 feet of pre-finished 6 inch baseboard in my refinished basement. Previous flood damage caused the finished basement to become unfinished. After a few years of piecemeal refinishing, the baseboard was the last step for completion of the basement restoration. Brian responded with interest to quote the job and came out to my house to review the site. Subsequently, he provided a quote that was fair and reasonable. When Brian actually started the job, he quickly determined that where the basement floor had previously been carpeted and now was covered with vinyl, the baseboard height was too short to cover wall remnants left by the previous baseboard. His solution was to raise the baseboard by approximately 3/8 inch and then obtain and install a 1/4 round shoe. Brian took the time to go procure the 1/4 round, prime it and paint it, and then install it. Essentially, doubling the work. We agree to adjust his quote accordingly and, again, his quote adjustment was fair and reasonable. His finished work was outstanding and of professional quality. I will keep his name and phone number in my contact list for any future work. Brian is pleasant, personable, and easy to work with, and his work is of the highest caliber. He's good at finished carpentry. If you get a quote from Brian, you can't go wrong giving him serious consideration to perform your work.

We had Scott and his team, with All Access Construction, install an exterior door in a basement, which meant they had to cut through a concrete wall. He said it would be a 2 day job and that is exactly how long it took them. They showed up when they said they would and communicated well, when weather became an issue for them. They came in and got the job done with no problems at all and cleaned up behind them. They were very professional. I would highly recomend All Access Construction and will definitely use them again!

We used Scott for our Lake Sherwood Lake House for several projects. Painting all exterior doors, interior stairs, ceiling repair, etc. Plus he installed all new baseboards on the entire main level. The finished work was excellent and his pricing competitive. The baseboards looked exceptional and he handled everything from getting the wood, installation, painting & caulking. He went to the house several times to check his measurements and the majority of his prep cutting was done off site making the actual installation go quicker. On the painting it was good but we did have to request that he follow up on some missed spots and apply another coat of paint. Ceiling repair & painting was very good as you can not even see the repair. Communication... His communication style is gruff, when he firsts meets people he is not very friendly and is quick to bad mouth things. He made negative comments to others working at our house, spoke poorly of other vendors and was quick to offer his opinions that we purchased crappy paint, did not like our wood floor choice, etc. (Behr Marquee paint at $48 per gal is hardly crappy paint and received the highest ratings from consumer reports) After my first meeting with him I was not going to hire him because of his initial approach. But then reading his reviews and checking his ratings with the BBB decided to use his services. We share this because after you get past this he is friendlier and his work is very good. He ended up actually paying compliments about the work of our flooring installer and did apologize on a few mix ups. Scott was very responsive via text and was prompt to follow up with us. He worked quickly and completed everything right on schedule. In fact, ahead of schedule! Overall we were pleased with the work he did for us but just know it might be a little bumpy process.

We always call Jeff at M.B.A. Contracting. He has done many jobs for us, such as installing a new counter top and faucet in a bathroom as well in a laundry room. He added a outlet in our lower level that I needed. He also put a new deck on our house. To say he is versatile, reliable, affordable and someone you won't feel uncomfortable having work in your home. Good guy to work with.

I came in contact with Bruce about 7 years ago. His first project was to remove a deck and add a family room. The work was done in a very professional and neat way. The price quoted was right on target. He worked with me and made sure I was happy with the project when completed. Since then he has upgraded my kitchen, laid flooring through out my home, replaced my windows and installed planation shutters. The project that has thrilled me the most was removing my tub, replacing it with a walk in shower and totally remodeling the bathroom. I cannot say enough about Bruce and his work. I would recommend him any time, with no reservations. He is trustworthy, knows what he is doing, does it in a neat and timely fashion with an affordable price and works with you so you are never inconvenienced. It is a pleasure to recommend Bruce, he is a man of character, manners, and knowledge. In addition to all the above Bruce is a true gentlemen and they are hard to find these days.

I hired McKay Installations after finding them on Craigslist. Tom came out and quoted my basement and I hired him instantly. He quoted me way less than I expected and was able to start right away. From the start, I knew I could trust Tom in my home and he finished the basement two days early! I would recommend McKay installations to anyone! He painted my entire basement, patched up holes and changed out tile! He is coming back next week to rip my carpet out and replace with flooring! I am so excited to get my house to be my dream home with his help!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
