Very happy with Jerry! We texted back and forth (he answers right away) about replacing my shower door. He first came to look at it - no charge- and, when the new shower door arrived, he scheduled a time right away. I also ordered a light fixture and faucet as well. He installed everything yesterday- he's prompt, skilled and attentive to detail and very reasonably priced. My bathroom looks so much better. And, Jerry is just a really nice guy too...so, would call him again- highly recommend!

My home needed a few repairs/upgrades as we prep to put it on the market: bathroom fan & garbage disposal installs, light fixture replacements and a large cleanup of old basement wiring. After a friend recommended Thumbtack to me, DEES Electric responded right away and they stood out from the pack from the start. Their communication & response times were excellent and the free in-home estimate was a nice touch. A lot of the other contractors that contacted me did not offer this. After Phil & Parker came out to the house they responded back within a couple days with a price for all of the work I had requested. They were easy to deal with during this process and shortly after we had agreed on a price & date/time for the work. During their visit they were prompt, very nice and kept the work areas clean. They were open to my suggestions on various aspects and very willing to accommodate my requests to the best of their ability. The work was finished in less than one day and I'm pleased with the results. I would recommend DEES Electric to anyone looking for some electrical work around their house. Thanks!

Brian is very responsive to messaging and phone calls. Brian is polite and cleans up his work space and wants to make his customers happy by doing top notch work. He visited ahead of the actual work date to look at the space where the work needed to be completed. He coil wrapped our French patio door frame and did a wonderful job. He will be returning to install a window and custom trim.

Linda and her daughter were amazing. We had just bought this house that was in desperate need of a deep clean before we could move in, and they came to the rescue! Every inch of that house was touched and left looking amazing. They even saved us from replacing the kitchen flooring because they made the stains in the flooring literally disappear! I highly recommend them to anyone, you won't be disappointed!

Darrell did a great job! I purchased a dud thermostat, so I had to run to Lowes and get a new one after he discovered it wasn't working. He wasn't phased and even came back same day, within a few minutes of me returning home with replacement thermostat. And he wasn't going to change me extra, even though it took two trips / longer than expected because my first new thermostat wasn't working. I did pay him extra, because of the hassle, but when I asked him how much, he stuck with his original quote. That's integrity! (Which is why I paid him extra!). He brought his son who is learning the trade. I like a father who'll pass on his knowledge!

Awesome! GoEcoExteriors (especially, Jenny and Larry) were fantastic to work with. We have never worked with a company that ensured that we were happy with EVERYTHING. It was nice to have Jenny (project manager) that concentrated on our account from pricing, to ordering materials, coordination deliveries, to working with our insurance company. She also was extremely prompt in addressing any email or phone inquiries. Larry (the site manager) came by and ensured that all was going as scheduled, any issues brought to his attention were addressed promptly. Our home was left without debris left laying around and any equipment that was being used was picked up and left neatly ready for work the next day. The gentleman who sided out house (Floyd and Al) did one heck of a job. We had a couple of extra items done (repairing chimney vent, replacing a back door and storm door), again work was great. When we need any other work done on our home, we will go directly to GoEcoExteriors!!

Had a door replaced. The door was to the garage. Brian was very professional, very friendly. The job was a little more involved than just replacing the door. He came up with a game plan and it looks great. Will definitely hire him again for future projects.

Kevin replaced our old basement windows and door with new ones. The basement door was a custom size. Two previous handymen we had estimates from were unable to figure out the door for us. Kevin completed the job in the time frame he quoted and had no problem customizing our new door. He kept a neat work space, was polite and respectful, and the windows and door look perfect. We would recommend him to a friend and will call him for our next remodel job.

I had Mr. Hamdyman come out to my home and imstall a window, fix some wood rot in bathroom and install new flooring. Very professional, explained what they would be doing for you, respect your home by putting on shoe covers before entering and fairly priced. I will be using them for any future projects and strongly recommend this company to anyone!

I found New Leaf Painting to be absolutely professional, accommodating and fast. I started this project very overwhelmed and in less than a day, he had all my questions answered and my concerns put to bed. Paul came into my home, explained his process and then walked me through my home for a no cost estimation; within 24-hours, he emailed me a very detailed bid. On the first day, he came in to paint all the trim and touch up any holes. When I arrived home, he had not only done that, but he had repaired my master door and replaced all missing door stops (not included in estimate; just wanted my home to look its' best). The second day, he allowed me to take time choosing my colors while he worked on the second level of my home. When I returned that evening, he was completed and told me he would be replacing all bulbs I couldn't reach as well as the batteries in my smoke detector; again, just those small details. After Easter, Paul and his team had finished up coming back a fourth day just to look for any touch ups and inspecting his work. My home looks brand new! I was able to choose every color for every room, he pulled out the refrigerator, respected my home and neighbors and returned everything back to how it was positioned. Paul & New Leaf Painting has found a lifetime client! Pics of my "new" home coming soon!

"The Glass Guru of O'Fallon recently installed an In-Glass Pet Door and Window. The services were on time, clean, and completed with quality workmanship. I replaced a pet door insert with a replacement pet door offered by The Glass Guru. It has several advantages over my previous pet door. It is double layered to prevent wind from blowing in. There are several magnets to help hold the flaps in place. The sliding door can now be fully opened eliminating a restricted door opening. It also has a secure panel to prevent use when not desired. We love it. We have also had a few windows replaced with the same experience. Thank you Gregg!"

Abaco came out on a Sunday to perform work requested. Very professional and very informative. Extremely capable and able to assist in what was needed vs. what was identified by an 3rd party install of a Big Box Home Improvement Store. Abaco saved me from as unnecessary work, time and unneeded additional cost. I would highly recommend from both a service and trustworthiness perspective. Obvious that Abaco's motive was to serve me to the best of their ability and not ring up a bill.

Earlier this year my house caught on fire. My home needed a full demolishion and overhaul. I hired Ollie (Oliver) McDowell as my contractor. Ollie did the full job from top to bottom including new roof, new walls, new windows, doors, new floors, new walls, fully primed and painted, new cabnets in both kitchen and bathroom. Ollie hand tiled my back splash in both the kitchen and bathroom. New Tub, toilet, and sink. New floors including carpeting, He had my home re-wired, new heating and aircondition.....etc. Ollie stucked within his time frame that was quoted on the bid. Ollie used good quality material in my house and put his personal professional touch in as well. You name it he did it. If there was something he could have done better, I never saw, because everything and ALL my encounters during the reconstruction was perfessional. Ollie is the most perfessional contractor you will ever want to use for your services. I would recommend Ollie on a scale from 1 - 10, with 10 being perfect I would rate him a perfect 10!! He is most definitly a professional contractor!!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
