"The two girls with their brooms were very professional, punctual and thorough in their deep cleaning of a condo that we are preparing to sell. The owner went above and beyond by calling me to provide useful information on small repairs that need to be made in the condo. She took the extra time to notice the flaws and report each of them to me in detail. Great value-added service! Would hire them again in a heartbeat!"

"We had a great experience with Quality 1 Movers! The movers did a great job loading the truck and made the most use of the space. They handled everything with care. They also wrapped all the furniture well to protect it all. This was our first time using movers and it was well worth the money!"

"I have had many people cleaning for me, but my experience with Elizabeth was the best. She works with absolute determination and does not back down from the most disgusting messes. She was a little more aggressive than necessary on a spider that she found, lol. I will definitely use her again."

"I contacted Kounty Cleaning to do a deep clean of my old apartment when I moved out. The team did an amazing job!! They arrived on time. They also called me before they cleaned the oven to let me know that it would cost more to clean it than I had originally been quoted (still a very reasonable price). I really appreciated that they called instead of just cleaning it and then charging me more! I'm very happy with their service, and I will be using them again and recommending them to everyone I know!"

"Stacey and her team were wonderful! We hired Riverbend Cleaning for a one-time deep clean of our home, and it looks great. Communicating with Stacy during my process of choosing a company to hire for the job was easy, and she was very responsive. We have two dogs and I was worried about where to keep the dogs or how they would like the ladies coming in the house. Immediately, all 3 ladies greeted the dogs and pet them and genuinely seemed to be great with the dogs. I was able to leave the dogs out (not in a kennel or room) and the dogs were perfectly content through the whole visit. Honestly, I came home at one point, and the dogs were just hanging out next to one of the ladies, and didn't even care that I walked in the door. The ladies arrived, greeted me and the dogs, asked me to show them what exactly I wanted done, and they got to work. I was stopping in and out between errands, and they all kept busy the entire visit. My husband and I went to lunch nearby while they finished up, and I got a text when they were wrapping things up. Price was very reasonable, and our house smelled so clean and wonderful when we got home. Floors looked great, the employees were very nice and friendly, and overall the cleaning was exactly what we wanted. My husband was a little skeptical about hiring a cleaning service, because he felt we could just do the work ourselves (although we NEVER would have had the time) but he was very impressed too and felt it was money well spent. They did much more than we would have. Thank you, Stacey and team, for all your hard work!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hiring a professional house cleaning service is a helpful way to have a healthy home even when your work and personal schedule is packed. House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets, and how often the cleaning service comes. Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $110 and $150. Prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

What is upholstery cleaning?

From your carpets to your drapes to your furniture, all fabrics need to be cleaned. Cleaning upholstery, or the fabric on your furniture, removes the dirt and oils that are transferred to couches and chairs through regular use. Because furniture upholstery can be delicate and colors can fade easily, it’s often a good idea to let professional sofa cleaners handle the job. They’ll determine the type of fabric — usually cotton, linen, wool, suede or microfiber — and the appropriate method for cleaning it, either steam-cleaning or applying a dry-cleaning solvent. In general, cleaning an entire piece of furniture includes a pretreatment, cleaning, and neutralizing rinse to the body, plus removing and cleaning all cushions and cleaning all crevices.

An upholstery cleaner may clean the entire piece of furniture, on a regular schedule or by request, or do spot treatments to remove pet, food, drink, or oil and grease stains. Furniture can also be deodorized to remove the smell of pets or tobacco smoke. Furniture that’s used often, like that in your family room, should be cleaned once a year to keep it fresh and extend its life. Sofa cleaners often also offer repair services to mend tears in fabric or patch holes in leather.

How often should carpets be steam cleaned?

Dirty carpets can be unhealthy for the people living in the home, particularly those who have allergies, so it’s important to have them cleaned regularly; simply vacuuming once or twice a week isn’t enough. Carpet cleaning should be done by a professional carpet cleaning service at least once a year to remove grime and help extend the life of your carpet. Most carpet manufacturers recommend professional steam cleaning, which penetrates deep into the carpet fibers and lifts out both dirt and the pollutants that get tracked inside. Steam cleaning also removes most of the moisture, so carpets dry quickly enough for homeowners to resume using them the same day. Between professional carpet cleanings, your carpet may need an emergency spot cleaning. Pet accidents, food or drink spills, and more can often be effectively cleaned with some water and a drop of white vinegar, although many cleaners will also make house calls for smaller spills and hard-to-clean spots like wine or grease stains.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.
