Rollie and his crew did an outstanding job with building my garage. They were professional, punctual and took care in making sure everything was perfect. They even worked on Sundays which was a surprise to me. Not many contractors would do that to get the job done. There some delays due to the weather but as soon as it cleared up, they were back on the job working. I would not hesitate to recommend to friends and family or to call on him for any other job that I need done. Excellent work!

I cannot sing enough praises about KH Interiors. Kevin has been wonderful to work with, his knowledge and expertise are completely transforming our home. From little jobs to a complete redo of every bit of flooring within our home, we are thrilled to have hired him. Kevin's crew has professionally completed bathroom demo, tile and hardwood removal, ripping back a wall, etc., and have paid great amounts of attention to all of the remodeling details. And if their expertise in those areas weren't enough, their crew's professionalism and courtesy is outstanding, making this process so much easier for our large family during the changes. I would and will recommend them to friends in the future. (They will also be hired again by us for future projects.)

I would highly recommend Braco Electrical and Contracting. Brandon was very easy to work with and responded promptly. He sent two of his team to help move my EV charger and thermostat from the house we were selling in St. Charles City and install at our new home in O'Fallon. The new house needed additional projects such as installing lights, dimmer switch, outlets. They were here all day and were such hard workers and a pleasure to work with. We are already scheduling additional work.

William replaced siding on my house that another company said they could cosmetically repair. After William walked me through the process, I realized his service was MUCH better than the other company. He did an incredible job replacing my siding and matched the paint perfectly. His team was incredibly professional and they were able to meet a very tight timeline to get the job finished. I am incredibly impressed with the quality of work and would recommend him to anyone. I'm very pleased with the work and will absolutely hire him again for future projects. OUTSTANDING!

Barry is amazing craftsman. Barry and his crew built a new bathroom and shower room in our last house. The results were stunning to say the least, everything was first class, the fixtures and the craftsmanship. Barry also did roof work, carpentry and trim. I can in all honestly give my highest recommendation. David

They did a great job, took their time to look at everything in detail. Even went above and beyond to to find the leak. They did everything I ask them to do in detail and above and beyond. I will defiantly be hiring them for other items I need updated and repaired in my home. They was on time, and very detail.

Hourglass remodeled my kitchen and the workmanship is beautiful! It was a complete gut job and involved moving a wall and removing soffits - it looks fabulous. Guy does excellent work - a bit slowly - but the end results are wonderful. We enjoy the kitchen every day and the improvement is hard to believe!

Brian and his business partner came out to my house to fix a storm door that had fallen off the door frame. They were right on time (early, actually), and got the job done quickly. The secured the door back in the frame and sealed the edges to make sure no water would get in. I will definitely use them again for future home repair projects.

I hired Nick to build the deck I always wanted on my house and things could not have gone any better. Not only did he listen to how I envisioned what I wanted, he was able to improve upon my ideas and give me very realistic renderings of how the deck and yard would look before a single deckboard was laid out. Its one thing to see it in your head and try to communicate it, but having the computer there to work with him for the exact look before building was amazing. He had so many great ideas to further my ideas to give the deck a standout look. The thing that set MadeMan apart from others is that any professional can come up with an idea, but NIck had the skills to pull them off in the actual build. All of my friends, family and neighbors have done nothing but tell me how much they love the deck and have even asked for his contact information. I can't wait to come up with the next home improvement build to have Nick come back and wow me and my guests again.

Dan Spiegel is Fantastic. We had his company do a stamped and stained patio for us and it turned out exactly the way we wanted it. We liked their work soo much that we later hired them to build our new garage which also worked out great. We have used them again for a couple other concrete jobs, but most important is that we not have a contractor we can trust and will never use anyone else.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
