He was very easy to get a hold of and communicate with. When he came by, he was very personable and knowledgeable. It explained the issue with our tile in our shower and kept the repairs minimal and for a reasonable price. Overall I could not have asked for better experience.

From the other reviews that I read, I hoped that Mike would be a good fit for our projects— it turns out that “good fit” is an understatement. We had a variety of projects, from minor plumbing repair to laying floor tile to installing doors and casing, and Mike was able to do all of it, and he did everything very well. His promptness and affordability were a bonus. We’re already planning to have him do more work for us.

The team did an excellent job on our project. The building was completed in 1934 and the plaster repair and painting was well done and matched perfectly.

Aaron completely remodeled my second floor bathroom, did some repairs on my main floor bathroom, and did some outdoor fixes as well, including on my siding. My last handyman remodeled my main floor bathroom in less time --- he also did a lazy, half-ass job and left things in disrepair. Aaron fixed everything there including a complicated electrical issue. I'm very happy with the job on my upstairs bathroom, where we replaced everything from the vanity to the shower tile, and he fixed pretty much every eye-sore, thorn in my side problem outdoors. Aaron is very meticulous and takes pride in doing jobs well. He spotted things that neither I nor various past contractors did and offered to fix them. I'm going to use him soon to repair a serious retaining wall problem between me and my neighbor's property. I'm also going to use him for various projects after that including some repairs on my back patio where the concrete has sunk and is guiding water into my basement. So he's obviously very skilled, experienced, and comprehensive about his work. Unless you're wanting a shabby, hurry-up job you won't be satisfied with, I would give Aaron a try on your next project.

My wife and I decided to update our master bathroom that was outdated by at least twenty years. We didn't have any previous experience with contractors, so we did as much research as possible. Andy came over to our house to provide an initial estimate, and we found him to be highly professional. He provided us with a very fair bid, and he did an excellent job of staying within the price he quoted us. Andy initially told us the project would take two weeks, and he was able to keep that promise even though there were a few unexpected plumbing issues that we uncovered. The work included laying new tile on the floor (porcelain), shower wall (glass subway tile) and installing a new bathtub. We are extremely happy with the finished product, and we would not hesitate to hire Andy again.

Working with Chad through our latest project in our home my husband and I were really pleased with Chads suggestions and how he gave us the options of the high and low cost of how to do the project for the best price. We had our countertops replaced a backsplash installed and two types of flooring with tile and laminate throughout the main level of our home. I would recommend them in the future for a great job!

Working with Troy was easy because he listened to what needed to be done, then took charge and complete the job quickly. He is pleasant to work with, knowledgeable about his craft, and I would recommend him without hesitation.

I hired Held contracting to do several projects. One was to paint a very deep stairwell which turned out beautifully, the other was to take off wallpaper that had been up for years and was very outdated and to paint, It also turned out wonderful, the third project was to take tile on guest bathroom walls and paint and it turned out marvelous. They also fixed a ceiling where someone else had replaced a fan and cracked my ceiling and built an ugly wood contraption to cover it. They redid my ceiling to make it look very nice. So the bid was ver fair and compititive as I did get three bids. I was extremely pleased with their promptness, personability, and attitude to get the job done to satisfactory. I did ask them to do a few more things and they completed it and the bid was still very fair and competitive. They installed my vanity and put up beautiful painted trim throughout my kitchen and bathroom and also hung my mirror and installed some blinds in an upstairs bedroom. Another thing on the vanity. I had bought at home depot and could not get to fit in my brothers car so they did go get that from Home Depot for me and when they went to install the vanity the backsplash was cracked so they went back up there and got a new one. They were there one week but a lot of that was the wallpaper and taking tile down they had to replace wall and mud and tape and let that settle before painting. There were two things that were left undone and he is coming back to fix. Like a three inch space of trim and a small place on the wall that needed to be painted. I was very pleased with the whole project!!! Thanks Craig and company!!

Josh installed my ceramic tile backsplash in my kitchen and was able to start the project the day after I contacted him as I was in a pinch to have it completed before Easter. He provided me an estimate of the cost prior to coming out and was very affordable. He was extremely professional in all his communications and was right on time. He texted me photos of his progress throughout the project and did an amazing job as the photos go to show! Josh really values customer service and followed up with me after the project was complete to make sure I was satisfied. I will definitely be using him again for my next project!

Brice brought several samples for me to look at. After deciding on the flooring I wanted he was quick to give me a quote. Once the order was placed it was delivered quickly. The floor I chose was luxury vinyl tile that looks like hard wood. When the job was completed it looked AMAZING. Brice was efficient and got the job done quickly as we were putting our house in the market. Everyone loved the floor that toured the house, just wish I could've enjoyed it longer.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
