Reynaldo and Manuel did an excellent job for us and we plan to engage their services again. They were very anxious to start work and were looking for other items they could do around our home. Not only do they do concrete work, but they are very good at landscaping services, too. I rated them a 3 out of 5 on communication only because English is not their primary language. They take great care to make sure they are doing what was requested. They put in a small concrete pad for our trash container and it was done very well. We have several other places that can use some concrete work and will engage them for that. They also work with tile.

To anyone looking to hire someone to take care of your garden and landscaping, Kathy Selz is the person to call. I only regret I didn't take before and after pictures of my landscaping because you would be able to see what a difference it makes when someone knows what they are doing. Kathy showed me the plants and bushes the deer are eating, bushes that were trimmed incorrectly and showed me I had probably a foot too much mulch. We made a plan to get everything the way it is suppose to be. Yesterday, Kathy and her crew came out and worked the plan. The mulch they dug out from the landscaping which had been accumulating for 20 years filled a truck and then some. I am so happy our "paths" have crossed and I look forward to a long relationship with Kathy and her company. She is a true professional that knows what she is doing.

Dan came to my house yesterday for the first time. I was impressed with his skills in assembling garden tools. He also took down sections of an old privacy fence and disposed the fence for a charge. Finally he cleaned up an area of my garden that has been an eyesore to me. So much was accomplished in a short time and for a reasonable price.

Last summer I had Quiet Village do my landscaping my back and front yard. Dennis let me know about the Rainscape rebates available through the Deer Creek Watershed Alliance. They designed a rain garden with all native plants in my back yard, we diverted water from my driveway to the rain garden instead of down the sewer as well as rain barrels to collect water from my roof which I now use to water my tomatoes and basil. The design was selected by the Deer Creed Watershed Alliance and I got a $2k rebate check a few months later!! I couldn't be more thrilled with my experience and now my plants are well established and starting to flourish, it has been fun this year to watch everything bloom.

I told Bruce I wanted to do a vegetable garden, all organic in my backyard. We got together, did a plan, Bruce brought it super-charged top soil with no chemicals, set up my raised beds, enclosed a dog-roof fence, created my raised beds and did the majority of planting. He checked and worked on the garden with me all summer. It was extremely productive. In addition he brought in wood chips for the walk paths and covered the other 1/2 of my yard with wood chips. Great job.

We were delighted with Katie and the work she did for us, beginning with coming to our home to provide an accurate estimate, showing up to complete the work when and how we had agredd, and staying very close to our budget. She also had lots of excellent suggestions for us to make our garden work well. A bonus was that her partner is an arborist and was able to trim a tree while he was here working on the garden. We would heartily recommend her for garden design and installation.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
