This is my first time using Thumbtack, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I needed a paint project done ASAP (living room, kitchen and dining room with 20 ft vaulted ceilings. The first person that gave me a quote backed out because “he didn’t have the proper tools.” Then Loyalty Construction (Brian) came through. He came to my house, gave me a very reasonable quote and started the project the next day. He answered every question I had and even gave me tips on other projects I’m working on at my house. I will definitely be using Loyalty for other upcoming projects! See attached before and after pics...

John and his brother Mario's complete kitchen, and flooring work was the best thing that ever happened to my kitchen. Barrale Brothers Painting and Remodeling, LLC had performed an excellent, high quality work remodeling my kitchen. Flooring as well was outstanding. I am extremely happy with the outcome and have asked John to give me a bid for the main bathroom to be renovated next.

I am delighted to provide this recommendation for Candice Wideman and Youtopia Designs. I hired Candice to help me completely remodel and redecorate the first floor of my house in 2014, and she exceeded my expectations in every way. I needed someone who could not only figure out how to create a more modern, comfortable, user-friendly kitchen and living area within the space available but also provide attractive decor recommendations that could withstand use and abuse by my five cats. Candice expertly filled this role and helped turn a cramped, dated space into a beautiful, functional, easy-to-clean sanctuary. Throughout the project, I found Candice to be a great listener and an enthusiastic advocate for the project. She provided recommendations that fit within my budget and communicated her concerns regarding some of my less-workable ideas with a balance of diplomacy and frankness that I appreciated. She consistently provided updates via email, text, and phone and saw to it that contractor-interaction was as unintrusive upon my schedule as possible. Candice’s passion for her work is evident in all that she does. She’s confident, cheerful, and a true joy to work with. The kitchen and living space she designed for me are exactly what I wanted, and I will absolutely be contacting her when I’m ready to tackle the second floor.

I hired Shannon to replace the faucet in the kitchen, garbage disposal and hook up the waterline to the ice maker. He installed shut off valves as well. He got here super quick and had the right materials with him. Everything was fixed fast and right. He was very courteous and did an amazing job fixing the leak in the kitchen. He is reasonably priced and I would highly recommend him to anyone needing any plumbing work.

I had a remodeling project to completely refinish my kitchen, 2 bathrooms and basement. B&C Contracting was 1 of 5 quotes that I received. They were extremely professional being that they didn't just simply give me a random estimate but they came and looked at everything I was interested in remodeling. Overall, they responded with an estimate the same day and I decided to hire them. They were able to take out what was there prior, take out a few walls, add new lighting areas in my ceiling, put in cabinets, countertops and appliances, put up drywall, re pour concrete, put in my flooring, paint and do general carpentry. They also installed a few new windows and doors. The job was finished in a couple weeks and the update looks perfect. We will eventually add an additional garage and rehire B&C Contracting Specialist to do this project as well.

We had new kitchen cabinets put in and an island installed with a new backsplash.. Matt is very professional, knowledgeable, dependable and very helpful. Matt has gone above and beyond what I thought Our kitchen could be. Our new kitchen is absolutely beautiful and functional. When the countertop company came to install the counters they were amazed at the accuracy he took so that not one shim was used.

KDB Home Improvements did a fantastic job with the framing project for a 115 year old 4-family unit. KDB is a problem solver. He ran into several challenges dealing with an old property such as rotted floor boards & joists, uneven walls and uneven floors. For every challenge that popped up, KDB used it as an opportunity to showcase superior carpentry skills. The crew always showed up on time, with their gear and were all very professional. They were fairly quiet on the job site. They just show up and work. I never had to wonder if they were going to be on time. They had full access to the property and I trusted them completely. There are several more projects that I have scheduled and KDB will get the first opportunity to bid on them. I would use them again without hesitation and would highly recommend them for any home improvement projects whether you are planning a complete gut rehab like my project or a kitchen or bath renovation.

I worked with Andrea to design my bedroom and patio area. It was easy to schedule appointments and she always kept the project organized and on track. She also has a incredible eye for detail, pointing out little touches I would've missed myself. I had a modest budget in mind, and she was very helpful in identifying used pieces of furniture. I wake up in the morning happy in my new room, and I couldn't ask for anything more.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
