Mr. Yanming is an incredible teacher. He is always willing to explain concepts over and over if you don't understand them. He always answers questions through emails or in person as soon as he can. He gives many examples when he teaches, ensuring that you fully grasp hard concepts. He also provides amazing analogies that relates the concept at hand to something practical in your life. I also had the opportunity to have Yanming as a private tutor for chemistry. He was incredible and always willing to explain things over and over until they were finally understood.

We hired this amazing tutor to help teach our son some basic science facts and answer various science and math questions. He not only met, but far, far exceeded our expectations and we will be using him again and again. He is simply a brilliant and engaging tutor who can explain even very difficult concepts to make them understandable to children of all ages. He is a published physics PhD who, as a father of five sons, knows how to relate to children and get them interested in science and math. He is also very well-traveled and teaches in a relaxed, conversational manner that makes learning enjoyable.

I can’t recommend Issac enough. He is genuinely one of the smartest people I’ve ever met, and he gives 110% effort to everything he does. I met him in college at Rolla and I was and still am blown away by his work ethic. He is an excellent tutor because he doesn’t just know how to do the problem, he fully understands WHY that is the way we solve the problem. He also explains things in a way that I can understand, even things that I would think are super hard to explain, like calculus concepts. I strongly recommend Issac as a tutor if you are struggling in math.

Excellent job tutoring my son that struggled greatly with high school geometry. He helped him take a failing grade and end up passing the course. My son felt very at ease with him to ask questions and learn the material. Will definitely be using in the future for any more Math struggles. His rates are affordable and his schedule very flexible. About

I was the supervisor of the largest community education center (Mullanphy) in St. Louis City (now retired). The youth attending the center were primarily 12 to 20 years old. We had a rule that in order to play basketball, you had to have three tutoring hours a week at the center, even if you were an honor student. I managed to get the honor students to tutor their peers if they were interested. I have been coaching students since 1985, from middle school through high school, as well as taught on the adjunct faculty of three community colleges. I like working with students, although my professional career was in business more than education. I have always got along well with youth and find it a worthwhile activity especially now that I am "semi-retired" and have more freedom with my schedule. You need to be consistent not gullible but respectful. What's easy for one person can be Greek to another. People learn differently, and the key is to find the key to each individual.

Students that work with me are very confident in their ability after a few sessions. I take my time to explain the material on an individual basis, instead of instantly turning to the textbook's methods.

I am currently a rising senior at Washington University and have taken university-level English and math courses, but I specialize in tutoring grades around pre-K to 9th grade. I can also help with ACT/SAT prep for those who are preparing for college. I got a perfect score on my ACT English section as well as placed in the 99th percentile for math. I am especially good with kids and have a lot of patience to help them through their studies.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
