I called Jerry on a Friday and made an appointment for the following Monday. Jerry sent me a text Sunday evening confirming the appointment and letting me know that he would call when he got close to my home. He came to our home on time and did a great job. He installed 2 sets of faucets in our bathroom and a new faucet in our kitchen in about 1.5 hours. He cleaned up and left the faucets shinning. He was very polite, did great work and my husband and I would definately hire him again.

I don't often need electrical and installation done on my home, but Roman with Roman Remodeling was fantastic. My wife and I had some bad experiences with other contractors but Roman made everything go smoothly. With his skills, experience, and knowledge, we were able to get our fan installation with no problem. This guy knows his stuff and he's incredibly professional and gets the job done all while being very personable. Great attitude, ability, and service.

We needed someone to stain our deck and to seal our concrete driveway. The Barrale Brothers gave us a reasonable quote and we accepted. We are so glad that we did. It was the best experience we have had with contractors. They were attentive to our requests and gave us information that kept us up to date on all activities required to get the job done. We were more than pleased. The only part that we didn’t like was that the previous contractor had mislead us about the post cover caps on the deck. When the Barrale Brothers worked on them, they were not able to return them to their previous luster. This is directly due to the misleading information given to us by the previous contractor. But Barrale Brothers stepped in and got us information that not only assisted in replacing those post cover caps BUT allowed us to upgrade to solar lighting on those caps! We were over the moon happy with how they looked. They have an excellent attention to detail and are highly knowledgeable as demonstrated by the post cover situation. My family would recommend them without hesitation and we will definitely use them again in the future!

What a pleasure it was meeting Don and enlisting his services to build our deck and retaining wall. His was one of two contractors who responded to our bid and we couldn't have imagined choosing anyone else. Don is professional, genuine and courteous. He was also reasonably priced and went out of his way to meet & exceed our expectations. The retaining wall included one of many upgrades and our beautiful deck was finished with patience and care. We highly recommend Don's services and look forward to his assistance in finishing our basement. Thank you.

We own a home in Kirkwood and wanted the lower level bathroom renovated. I used Thumbtack to find a contractor. Jay and Gloria Jarvis of Ecostruction LLC responded to my request for bids. This was the first time I sought a contractor using an online referral, and I admit I was skeptical. We received three responses from contractors and I contacted them all for bids. Jay and Gloria Jarvis, owners of Ecostruction LLC, impressed me with their promptness in getting together information I needed and meeting with me to discuss the job. The bathroom required a total tear down and renovation. From the first appointment with Ecostruction LLC to the completion of the work, they were knowledgeable and professional. They provided comparative costs for labor and products for any and all design elements we wanted to consider. In other words, it wasn't always their taste preferences that they cared about; they cared about what we wanted and what fit our budget. First and foremost, they wanted the best end result, not just in design but functionality for us. At the end of each day, the work area was cleaned up satisfactorily. We always knew when to expect their arrival the next day. Their expertise in renovation made this bathroom rehab a pleasant and gratifying experience. We now have a gem of a guest bath, complete with a Mr. Steam Shower. While Jay takes care of a highly trained crew, Gloria helps the clients choose appliances, fixtures, colors, flooring, and everything that adds the perfect finishing touch at the best price. They do not stop until everything is completed to the customer's satisfaction. The installation and follow-up far outshine other contractors we have had work on our house projects. My Five Star rating reflects my satisfaction with Ecostruction LLC and the trust I have in them to recommend them to others.

I want to recommend Yury and Yelena Pinigin from The Handy Man for their responsiveness and for going the extra mile. There was a leak in the living room of my house in St. Louis. I live in Texas and had been waiting for a roofing contractor to call me back (not a Thumbtack person). I pulled the Handy Man phone number from a previous project by accident. While this is not in their area, they went and looked at my property THAT DAY to check to see if it was the roof or the gutter or something else. They advised me FOR FREE, pretty much knowing it was not going to be work they would do since Yury is not a roofer. I want to thank Yelena for keeping in contact. Having contractors call me back and show up when they say they will has been a challenge. The folks at the Handy Man are exceptional. Thank you, Yury and Yelena!

Needed a garage demolished, got bids from a couple contractors, but Keith's was the only bid that included everything and could accommodate my request to keep some of the materials. I really appreciated that there were no surprise costs. The job took a little longer than they had initially estimated, but they got it done. I also appreciated that, even though I had asked for the garage to be completely demolished, they noticed that a lower portion was acting as a retaining wall, and recommended that I keep that piece to control erosion. They even gave me instructions on how to cap the remainder to make it look nice. All in all, great experience!

Despite our efforts to find a new home that was, "move in ready" the competitive home market and limited number of properties, lead us to consider buying a fixer upper and then hiring a contractor to make it "move in ready." I am an extremely anxious person and buying a new home is a very stressful situation on its own. Finding a contractor on top of everything else, was something that we had a lot of concerns about. From the start, Trinity Contracting (Tad), was very accommodating and provided us with a free estimate. During our first meeting it was apparent that he understood what we were trying to do and already had made some great recommendations. Once we decided to work with Trinity, things moved quickly and demo seemed to fly by. The scope of work was pretty large with 2 full bathroom demos, 1 main wall demo, 2 half wall demos, and complete demo of all the flooring except the bedrooms. Tad provided an aggressive timeline of 6-8 weeks for project completion and many others told me to expect double the time a contractor states. Not the case with Tad, work was almost completely done by week 8 with the exception of some minor finishing touches and we were able to move into the home on schedule. Tad was very involved during the process and took us shopping to pick out tile, wood flooring, bathroom fixture, etc. He was able to help us tremendously with pricing and also did a great job of mediating between my wife and I when we were split on a decision. Tad was also helpful about keeping our budget in mind and made sure that we did not go over on anything unless we wanted to. If there was a decision to be made which would cost more, Tad was there to discuss what things could wait and which would make more sense to do now. Tad and his wife, Shell, were very flexible at every step in the process and went out of their way to make things as easy as possible when we needed to meet. The project come out beautifully and Tad really stepped up in the end to make sure we had everything that was agreed upon despite a error made by a supplier. This really made me confident in Trinity, Tad, and his wife Shell as business and I look forward to working with them if we are lucky enough to finish our kitchen and/or basement in the future. I have already referred a couple of others to Trinity who were looking for contractors and would continue to do so if asked for a reference.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
