Introduction: You, the singer are the focus! Providing quality instruction is very important to me, the owner and instructor ( Carolyn Smith, M.S., B.M.) I tailor lessons to the needs and goals of the singing student. If you are serious about your singing and determined to be the best you can be, sign up. If you are interested in developing an excellent vocal technique and great musicianship and expression, join me. I'm looking for singers who want a teacher who will be supportive and encouraging but who will honestly and thoroughly critique them so they can progress quickly. The right studens for this studio are independently motivated to practice in a very deliberate manner to improve their teachnique and performance. My clients range from those seeking to be professional to those looking for the satisfaction of improving their singing greatly. Singers learn to sing in many styles of music including musical theater (I have studied drama as well as music), classical, contemporary Christian, gospel, rock, pop, country, jazz and more. My teaching emphasizes producing a vibrant, free tone utilizing the methods I learned during my 20 years of study with my vocal teachers. Watching my students progress is the most satisfying aspect of my job. When teaching, I especially enjoy diagnosing any problems with the voice and working together to solve them. Voice teaching often involves visualization and finding common images between the teacher and student, and it is very exciting when this happens. Meeting and working with many interesting people who are passionate about music is also exciting. It is also educational for me to work with students who have many different musical interests. I learn about a lot of new music and performers this way.

Singing Lessons

I just had my first lesson with Carolyn this evening. She is wonderful! I immediately felt confident in her knowledge and her expertise. She is working with me on basic theory and technique, and even after one half-hour lesson I can tell a difference in the quality of the sound I'm producing and the way it feels to be singing. I can't wait to work with her again next week!

Singing Lessons

I had an upcoming audition and I hadn't done performance singing in a few years. In order to prepare, I took a few lessons with Carolyn Smith. She is knowledgeable about the preparation process for an audition, as well as the actual singing lessons. We determined my singing range, then focused on perfecting the audition song. She is a positive and patient teacher, encouraging one over the tough spots while also challenging one to continue to improve each time with new techniques. She taught me how to adapt the sounds in the song to better show off my voice, how to add expression to my singing, and improve my overall sound (tone, projection, breath control, etc.). I highly recommend her to anyone who wishes to improve his/her singing abilities.

Singing Lessons

My son was very relaxed. Carolyn took the time to listen to his likes. She was very encouraging to his singing. She also took some extra time with him since it was his first visit to explain things a bit more. It was a great experience all around.

Singing Lessons

I attended an introductory session with Carolyn. She seemed very knowledgeable in voice. I felt very comfortable with her. Due to personal reasons I was unable to continue past the introductory session, but would definitely return to Carolyn for lessons in the future. Great instructor!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Students come weekly (or more often) and pay monthly in advance at the last lesson of the month for the upcoming month. Prices are $31.50 for each 30 minute lesson, $45.75 for each 45 minute lesson, and $60 for each hour long lesson. Coaching (short term lesson/lessons and group rates are available upon request. Please note that Thumbtack will charge me if you contact me (as well as charging all the others for contact with you) so please reach out to me if you are serious about studying with me. Check my availability on the calendar as well. Other costs: For online lessons, students will need reasonably fast internet, and preferably the ability to use Ethernet to connect their device to the internet. A condenser microphone, an interface, and wired headphones are also important in order for the teacher to get an accurate reproduction of the voice.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I offer (at the regular price) an introductory lesson at which we discuss goals and background, have a mini lesson, and set priorities. After the intro lesson, the client and I decide whether they want to commit to weekly lessons and they can then reserve a regular weekly lesson time (or more often if desired). This requires a payment for the first month of lessons plus a $50 deposit (which will apply towards the last lesson if the client gives 30 days notice in writing).

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

My degrees are from University of North Texas and include a M.S in Music and Drama and a B.M in vocal music plus a teacher certificate in all level vocal music. I have teaching certificates in 2 countries. I am a member of National Association of Teachers of Singing and participate in continuing professional training through that organization and through contemporary singing seminars. I also completed a course in digital sound design and have studied beginning music production and programming for musicians. I have sung lead roles in parlor operas, musical theater productions, and oratorios and have sung with bands and in a cappella groups. That's why I studied singing for nearly 20 years in private vocal lessons in addition to my musical studies at university. I studied advanced vocal teaching methods and combine this knowledge with a strong academic grounding in music and strong performance skills.
