Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average fixed rate for handyman jobs ranges from $120-$175. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates:

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fees.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. What do handymen charge per hour?

On average, you can expect to pay a handy person around $55 per hour. However, this cost can range between $35 and $80 per hour, depending on a number of factors. For instance, a handyman may charge a minimum fee of $50-$100 for small jobs that won’t take much of their time. The complexity of the job will affect the price as well. Your final price will also depend upon where you live, as certain regions have higher labor rates than others.

Is it worth it to hire a handyman?

It’s worth it to hire a handyman in many cases. For example, you should hire a handyman when the project’s size and scope make it challenging to complete by yourself. These projects may include major home remodels or additions, foundation work or electrical/plumbing/HVAC-related tasks. However, make sure the handyman has the proper credentials or license to perform the necessary work.

You might also want to hire a handyman if a contractor’s price is too high. Handymen often charge less than general contractors, but contractors typically have the required license to perform certain tasks.

And, lastly, think about the complexity of the job and the cost of future repairs. It’s worth it to hire a handyman when the project is complex. Doing something incorrectly can wind up costing more than hiring the pro in the first place.

Does a handyman need to enter my home?

In many cases, a handyman will not need to enter your home for outdoor repairs, but they’ll likely need to enter your home for indoor repairs. With the pandemic’s associated safety guidelines, it’s important that this only occurs for absolutely essential projects. Avoid any physical contact with the handyman if this is the case. Sanitize surfaces, and conduct payment through a digital platform like PayPal or Venmo. Be sure to contact your handyman and develop a plan before the job commences.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a handyman during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Setting up a safe consultation or appointment with a handyman during the COVID-19 pandemic starts with comparing local professionals online. Message or call the handyman to ask about performing a consultation over the phone or, better yet, a video call. This will allow the handyman to assess the problem without increasing the risk of transmission by visiting your home. If the service is essential and the handyman needs to enter your home, you’ll need to take stringent safety measures for the visit. Discuss temporary fixes if possible, and come up with a plan for safety and digital payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for handyman services?

Many handymen accept digital payments for work done repairing homes. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and the urgent need for social distancing, this trend is likely going to increase. Handymen often accept payment through popular platforms like Paypal, Google Pay, Zelle, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Consult with the handyman before you begin work to ensure you’ll be able to conduct the transaction safely and in compliance with official guidelines.

How can I find out if a handyman is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Depending on the service needed, a handyman may be considered essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can check by visiting your city or state’s government website. In addition, CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage offers national guidelines for determining essential services. Their page delineates 16 essential infrastructure sectors that can continue to operate during the pandemic. But note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do handymen offer remote or virtual services?

Because a handyman needs to be physically present to perform work, they have not traditionally offered remote or virtual services. However, if you come across handyman profiles that state they offer remote services, message the handymen to see what those services include.

Confer with your handyman to see if consulting over video calls is possible. The professional may be able to walk you through performing basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC and other types of repairs around the house. Compare the handymen in your area side-by-side online, and ask whether they’re willing to help remotely.

I rarely recommend people, but we hired Paul of LP Handyman and he did an amazing job! He is thorough, patient, reasonably-priced, and professional. We originally hired Paul to hang a ceiling fan and some other odds and ends. He helped find creative solutions to some unique issues. Paul is super personable and trustworthy--just an all-around good guy. We have hired him several times now and plan to hire him for all of our handyman needs.

This was my first time trying Thumbtack. The responsiveness to my initial inquiry started this off well. The coordination for when service would be done and the work quality was excellent. Glad to have new outside lights now in place. Certainly will be using LP Handyman again for other needs as they arrive.

Steven did a nice job for me. No jobs too small for this handyman. He re-caulked my master bathroom shower and kitchen cabinets. He also secured a microwave and replaced the bathroom vent fan motor. He was courteous. I would definitely call upon him for help again!

Paul mounted a 65" tv for us (and took down an old one). He was professional and helpful. I also appreciated how he called the day before to confirm and get details about the job. He is a great handyman to call for those honey do lists you want to get down.

Doesn’t seem reliable. Responded saying he would be able to do a job for me this Thursday and then has not responded to messages or calls regarding this job. This review has nothing to do with his work, but more his professionalism. I need a handyman and held off on finding another because he said he would be able to do the job.

This was a waste of time. The pump in my washing machine isn't working (I think that it just isn't getting power). I hired this contractor to come take a look at it. As soon as he showed up, he explained that he wasn't a handyman, he was a plumber (despite being listed as a handyman in Thumbtack). I described the issue with the washer. He asked how old it is, and then told me that I just need to get a new one. He was insistent that there was no point messing with it. He didn't look at the washer at all, and was at my house for less than 5 minutes. I booked this contractor over two weeks ago. If this wasn't the kind of work he did, or if he just didn't want the work, he had ample opportunity to tell me so. Instead, I wasted time that I could have used to work with someone else.

Adam responded to our request for a bid by coming out and actually talking with us and looking at the jobs instead of just giving an hourly quote by text or email. This made us confident in his bid and we were proved correct by his accomplishing the jobs timely, professionally and at a price we were happy with. We will recommend Adam to our friends needing Handyman services and definitely will use him for any of our future needs.

Justin was very responsive when I contacted him through thumbtack. He reinstalled a sliding barn door that was improperly done by a previous handyman. He reinstalled and repaired my trim, as well as installed new trim. The previous person had really done a bad job and Justin made it look much better than I thought it could. He also cleaned and vacuumed and left the area looking nice. Would recommend Justin.

Paul was amazing. Not only did he do a great job I originally hired him for, he was open to doing a few extra things and even fixing some things that I didn't know were broken! He was communicative, punctual, and personable. My favorite thing was his professionalism. Paul made sure to level-set realistic expectations while still delivering stellar results. I plan to hire him for all of my handyman needs.

P and R are an excellent choice. They quickly fixed a kitchen cabinet corner door that other handyman services were unable to repair. They repaired the front door on my historic home; the door was starting to get caught on the frame and causing locking the door to be difficult. Now the door opens and closes very smoothly and locking it is no issue. They replaced broken trim around my baseboards and replaced a broken water spicket on the outside of my house. Sealed cracks along my front steps and replaced a crumbling corner stone. Repaired tile grout, replaced out of date light switch's. Replaced an out of date toilet fill valve assembly. Best services ever and competitive pricing.

Chadwick deserves ten stars! Even though my project was at the last minute, Chadwick was a real trooper and agreed to start on a Sunday evening-!!!, and get this-it was the night before Christmas Eve!!! All I had to do was describe what I needed, and he built the thing from scratch! He even improved & enhanced my project. Chadwick really knows his stuff- very versatile-a real handyman who can do it all. Just tell him what you want done, relax, & leave it to him to give you what you need. He's an honest, reasonably priced, highly skilled, flexible, professional, experienced craftsman. I already hired Chadwick for another, completely different upcoming project-need I say more?

I called DC and asked his hourly rate of $75 and made an appointment to install 2 faucets. I had previously had him install 1 faucet and repair one. He charged me $75 an hour and I was pleased with the price and his work. This time he installed 2 faucets and it took him exactly 2 hours. He did a good job but when he told me what I owed he gave me a price of $500. I reminded him of the $75 an hour and he said that plumbing was different. He then said he would make it $350. I had somewhere else to be, even though I new this was basically robbery. I just wanted this to be taken care of. On top of this he charged a $25 fee to use a credit card. An actual plumber would have cost me less. Do not hire this handyman thinking you will save money. This one will charge you as if he is the professional and the price you are trying to avoid.

Aaron completely remodeled my second floor bathroom, did some repairs on my main floor bathroom, and did some outdoor fixes as well, including on my siding. My last handyman remodeled my main floor bathroom in less time --- he also did a lazy, half-ass job and left things in disrepair. Aaron fixed everything there including a complicated electrical issue. I'm very happy with the job on my upstairs bathroom, where we replaced everything from the vanity to the shower tile, and he fixed pretty much every eye-sore, thorn in my side problem outdoors. Aaron is very meticulous and takes pride in doing jobs well. He spotted things that neither I nor various past contractors did and offered to fix them. I'm going to use him soon to repair a serious retaining wall problem between me and my neighbor's property. I'm also going to use him for various projects after that including some repairs on my back patio where the concrete has sunk and is guiding water into my basement. So he's obviously very skilled, experienced, and comprehensive about his work. Unless you're wanting a shabby, hurry-up job you won't be satisfied with, I would give Aaron a try on your next project.
