Ashley is very intuitive & creative. She came up with a design plan that I absolutely loved after just one conversation. My project is an interior remodel of my 40 ft travel trailer which is parked in a resort 90 minutes from my home. I put the entire project in Ashleys' very capable hands.

I recently moved to Charlotte NC and down-sized from a 3600 square foot home to a 1600 town-home. I was not able to use any of my furniture since it was all too big for the new space. I had a totally empty canvas but drew a complete blank on what to do. I contacted Stephanie Smith who was kind, patient and most of all listened. We reviewed what the few items I was bringing to my new home which consisted of mostly art and accessories. She got a feel for my style through her excellent listening skills, reviewed her selections with me and did all the space planning. She held my hand through the entire process and was patient and understanding with all my questions. She was also quick to respond which was very refreshing. Her hard work resulted in a space that is exactly me - I could not have done better for myself if I was an interior designer. I am thrilled with my home and I can confidently recommend Stephanie Smith as an expert in her field.

We've had many great decorating successes working with Susan the last four years. We really had some challenges redecorating a very outdated 80's condominium from scratch but Susan came through with flying colors. She completely understood our tastes and it turned into a very positive experience. She is always on time, on budget and puts as much enthusiam into a small project as she does into a large project. She can always find just the right piece of furniture, window treatment, accessory or paint color (she's a great painter too). We look forward to working with Susan in the future for all our decorating needs.

Essence Design and Interior Decorating helped me do a complete remodel of my kitchen and living room spaces. Amy was a consummate professional throughout the whole process. She presented several alternative ideas, taking into account my goals and preferences and transformed the kitchen space into a very functional work space that wows my visitors when they see it for the first time. The Living Room was transformed into a warm, welcoming space that is tasteful, functional and beautiful. She assisted in everything from color pallet selection, flooring, tile selection, granite countertop selection, plumbing fixtures, lighting, furniture, artwork, window treatments, etc. Amy made sure it all flowed together seamlessly and tastefully. Her fees were reasonable and she was always prompt whenever we had a meeting scheduled. I recommend Essence Design and Interior Decorating enthusiastically to anyone who wants to ensure their project is going to be a success.

Jenna Leffew assisted us in choosing curtains and hardware for our living room windows. She had valuable suggestions and helped us choose options. She and her asisstant (her father) came to install the hardware and the drapes. They did a terrific job. The curtains are all that I thought they would be and help make the room much more attractive. Working with Jenna was a very pleasurable experience and I recommend her services.

I bring to the table attention to detail, superior product knowledge, integrity, and organization. I start the design process with an initial consultation and budget review. Based on the consultation, I develop preliminary estimates and design schemes utilizing drafting and space-planning skills. Next, I coordinate interior finishes, furnishings, and accessories using specifications that can include, but are not limited to: paint and/or wall treatment, lighting, plumbing, floor covering, tile/granite, cabinetry, furniture, upholstery, area rugs, art, bedding, floral arrangements, and custom window coverings. I work directly with the homeowner, builder, architect and/or developer to create a timeless design. About

I am a nationally published interior designer who works to reflect your taste and to exceed your expectations. So whether it's a simple color consult, a re-design with elements you already have, house staging, or a new house design from the ground up, I can work with you to create space that reflects you and your values while creating an interior that nurtures you, your family and your design aesthetic. I actually call myself a "visual problem solver" in order to minimize so many of the intimidating stereotypes that often come to mind when thinking about interior design. It's really pretty simple. You have a a spacial design "problem" that you need help solving. By engaging me as a design professional, I help you solve those design challenges in ways you might not otherwise have imagined. I am a kind, responsible, and hard working man with over 30 years of designing interiors as well as many of the products used in the industry. You pay only for my time as I encourage you to purchase items directly, minimizing mark ups that many other designers benefit from. I want our experience to be mutually beneficial, so I offer an initial complementary 30-minute consult to see how our personalities fit upon our first meeting one another. Creating personal space is too important to be weighted by issues of incompatibility. Once we agree we are right from one another we then proceed from there. My initial objective is to learn about your personal taste (likes and dislikes), how you want your home to support you, and what your budget will allow. Typically, this is done at an hourly rate competitive with other regional designers. We can work together for as much or as little time as you like. In closing, I look forward to sharing my gifts with you in a way that honors you and your values and results in a unique and distinctive home that feeds your soul. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
