"After searching for a massage therapist who does something similar to Isometric Body Balancing (that helped me tremendously after I broke my leg 7 yrs ago), I finally came across Healcyon. I have now had 2 sessions, which have already benefited me greatly. Arthur is a true professional. The sessions are never rushed and are done in a very relaxing environment, which truly adds to the experience. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is suffering with imbalances in the body, pain, or who just wants a great massage to relieve stress and tension."

"Complete relaxation. This is how I describe my massage session with Akira. I stand a lot with my work, so my back, glutes and legs are often very tensed. Akira was able to realize the areas that were tense and through deep tissue massage, work to relax the muscles. By the end of the 120 mins session, I felt the most relaxed I have in a long time. From my experience, I can see that Akira is very respectful and cares about his clients. He first reviews the intake form to see what expectations the client has and to determine if there are any medical conditions that might affect the therapy. Throughout the session, Akira checks to make sure the pressure is okay. The mood of the room is calm with soft tranquil music. The massage table is very comfortable and warm and the draping is professional. Overall the experience was wonderful. Akira was professional, very thorough as a therapist, focused on his work (and not checking his cell phone/texting like many therapists do), reasonably priced and his office was clean. It is great to have Akira in the community."

"I filled out the initial paperwork and chatted with Mary before the massage about just a tiny bit of what was stressing me out and how I was just there for the massage. I apologized to her in advance if I happened to fall asleep... OMG!!! All I remember is her asking me in a soft voice to get undresssed and on the table and the next thing I know, she was telling me, still in a soft voice, to take my time getting dressed!! I argued with her about 90 minutes having gone by and she just laughed! I think she messed with all the clocks....LOL! She is AMAZING!! And I can't wait to book her again for my next 90 minute nap oops, I mean, massage! I HIGHLY recommend Mary, she just oozes warmth and compassion. You won't be sorry; I'm not!"

"As many of us, I find that I hold onto stress. This casues many aches and pains in my neck, shoulder and lower back. I also have some foot pain. Yeong has brought to me her knowledge, experience and expertise. Yeong not only gives a wonderful massage, she also helps you to understand what is going on with your trouble areas. She offers many suggestions to help you to improve your health. I have visited Yeong several times already and plan to make many more visits. I have felt so much better since seeing her."

"Albert was very professional and knowledgeable about fitness and message. I frequently participate in weight lifting competitions so I came to him for a sports massage to relieve pain and discomfort. Not only did he provide a superior massage, but he took his time and explained to me tips on how to warm up prior to weight-lifting, as well as showed me how to maximize my lift. What an excellent experience! I will definitely be going back."

"I have been receiving therapeutic massage from Shashi for several months and am very satisfied with his service. He performs professional, deep tissue massage at a reasonable rate. He is more concerned about my health than his wallet. He took time to explain my problem and his techniques. I tried other masseuses in the area and found his techniques to be more effective. If you are seeking a professional, deep tissue therapeutic massage (not gentle, soothing, fluffy, or kinky massage), try Shashi! Ron S."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
