Dan did a fabulous job for us in removing a load bearing wall and building a pantry. Before he started he walked us through everything and explained the process, taking the time to answer all our questions. He is very detail oriented and a true craftsman with extensive knowledge of home construction. We will not hesitate to hire him again for any future projects.

The firstt thing I have to say is that Erin was an absolute pleasure to work with! From the get go, he was very easy to communicate with and knew exactly what we wanted. We had a plain wall with a fireplace and wanted bookshelves added to both sides of the fireplace spanning from floor to ceiling. I sent him pictures, he came out to look at our space, asked the necessary questions and ended up putting together a beautiful set of bookcases with cabinets. The quality is spectacular...I couldn't have asked for anything more! I would recommend his work to anyone in a heartbeat!

There were two jobs: 1) replace a water-damaged window sill, and 2) straighten a mailbox post. It was soon clear to me that Mr. Boswell is a skilled carpenter and takes pride in his work. The one and only problem was really my fault - I was distracted and did not go back inside the house to check the window until after Mr. Boswell left. Unfortunately, four nails had come through and were protruding from the frame apron. I called him and Mr. Boswell came back first thing the next morning to break off the nails, fill the holes, and paint the damaged wood. It took all of 10 minutes. Again, my fault for not catching this before Mr. Boswell left.

Dave is our “go to” guy for all our household needs, from painting to drywall. He is a jack of all trades, even handling a refinish of half our basement. Great clean up after each work day as well. Great work!

I have done two projects with Gene Batten. The first time we worked together I was looking to replicate molding around the interior doors of my house in Manhattan. The molding was a complex design, inlaid and such, and Gene was the only one who could come up with a cost effective solution. Everyone else wanted thousands for about 30 feet of molding which they said had to be cut/carved/shaped/coddled in about 18 different directions, but Gene has some miraculous machine which simply carved the molding out of one solid block of wood. No inlays, no muss, no fuss! He did several runs till he got it exactly right, and the end result is absolutely perfect. I think it's pictured on his website, but even that doesnt reflect how lovely it looks installed, all stained and finished. A great job. The second was an "L" shaped bar top for our kitchen. It had to fit in a corner, kind of, on an existing half wall, so measurements were important. Gene very patiently worked up several drawings, and painstakingly went over it with me for weeks. Since I'm in NYC and he's in North Carolina, we didnt want to mess up; a quarter/half inch here and there is quite critical! The end result is another lovely piece of work. An expertly crafted black walnut counter top which greatly enhances the look of the place. I really cant say enough good things about Mr. Batten. Two projects, two home runs, a lovely chap to deal with, and a first class product at a very fair price. I think that about covers it ;-) Gavin Spencer NYC

Requested Jeff Myers (owner) to come in and resurface 15 year old alderwood cabinets using a Sherwin Williams (Pure White) paint. It is a total, spectacular transformation. His work is impeccable, he is most knowledgable about cabinetry with an extensive background in cabinet making and installation. At all times, he was prompt, very honest and a delight to work with. Our kitchen is completely changed, looks brand new and we even included soft close hinges which are great. His pricing is very reasonable considering the fabulous end results. Would highly recommend Triangle Custom Woodworks! Thanks again Jeff, we lover our bright, clean kitchen!!

Drew was great to work with. He really listened to what we were looking for and did a great job clarifying the design before jumping into it. He was great about sending us update pictures during construction to make sure we liked how the design or stain looked. He did such an amazing job and we would highly recommend Berrett Woodworks!

Mr. Manner has been nothing short of fabulous to work with from the very start of our correspondence. He has always been prompt and quick to come up with creative solutions for our bookshelves project that was anything but easy. He always managed to go above and beyond my expectations for the project and was patient in answering all of my questions and concerns regarding the build. Now that the project has reached completion am left with a stunning work of art that has already garnered tons of compliments—our bookshelves turned out better than we could have envisioned on our own and we are already lining up new projects with this awesome craftsman. I can’t imagine working with a better professional in his trade and count myself lucky to have found him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
