I highly recommend Fausto. He did great work on our front and backyard that was totally overgrown with weeds. Very pleasant to work with and hardworking. I will definitely hire him again.

We highly recommend using Larry and Debbie for landscaping needs. Our backyard was a mess - uneven and grassless. They leveled it out and added topsoil and grass seed so that our backyard will be a place we can enjoy. They worked quickly, were friendly and genuine, and took great care that the job was done right. Larry truly cares about the quality of his work. They went above and beyond what we asked to ensure our yard looks great. We will be using them in the future for more projects! Thank you so much Larry and Debbie!

They overlooked a small patch of grass between rock garden and backyard. I gave them a call and the next day the job was completed. Great customer service, they get 5 Star. 👍

My wife and I bought a house 3 years ago with a severely sloped (virtually unusable) backyard. From the beginning we had a vision of terracing it with a retaining wall and creating a beautiful and useable backyard. When we sent this job out to bid on Thumbtack I had several companies come out and from the first time we met Rob I had a great feeling about him. Rob is a TRUE professional and takes care and pride in his work. You really get the sense that he treats every job as if he was doing the work at his own home. He went above and beyond what we asked of him and even my wife (who is unbelievably picky and detail oriented) could only find wonderful things to say. Not only was he fair in his pricing, diligent and timely in his work, but he communicated his plan every step of the way. To top it off I live in a neighborhood with lots of "concerned" neighbors and I got rave reviewed from the people on my street of how kind, professional and personable Rob and his employees were. I will absolutely call Rob next time we have work and already am planning on the next project! Thank you Rob!!!!

We had Extreme Yard Makeover remove 2 trees on our property and trim back another tree that was hanging over our garage. In addition, they hauled away a lot of brush from our backyard. They were very professional and completed the job in one day. We are very pleased with their work and would not hesitate to hire them again in the future if we were to have a need for their services.

We had a custom welded wire fence completed for our entire backyard. It was the first welded wire he had completed. His crew was very professional and if I asked them to tweak something they did without hesitation! At the same time he added a drainage line that's was extremely needed! He was great to deal with and I would definitely use him again!

Florentino and his team were extremely responsive to my queries and through the process on ordering and installing my fence. They were accommodating in making changes where I wanted and were always on time for all Interactions that we setup. They also did a fantastic job during the install process and cleaned up the mess and extra dirt that came out of the ground before they left. My backyard looks great. Would highly recommend them.

This is the 2nd time I had Treemenservices help us. This time I requested for 4 Thuja trees to be planted in my backyard for privacy. Treemenservices sent one professional and he did an outstanding job despite of the hot temperature outside. The professional gave us instructions for care when the job was completed and the 4 trees are doing well since being planted. Thank you!

Project consisted of regrading our backyard, installing what I call the structure (surge rock) of a dry river bed, removing a large tree and it's stump and spreading 50/50 blend of soil on newly graded area. First impressions are key and before we even received the quote from him, I knew he was a perfect fit for the job. Very personable, passionate about his work, willing to work within our budget and even explained to me how to save money by doing things myself such as spreading the grass seed and etc. Out of the several quotes we received John was the only one to follow up to make sure we understood the estimate and asked if we had any questions/ concerns. The project itself was a success! He kept us informed of all deliveries, sent out daily emails with updates and also went above and beyond the scope of work to improve the overall aesthetics. Finally after it was complete, he called to discuss what was done, answered our questions and assured me that if we had any questions down the road that he is always available. We will definitely use Destra in the future! Highly recommend him.

We hired Tyshon to do massive leaf raking in our backyard and to cut grass. It had previously taken 2-3 afternoons for people to get our large yard in order. Tyshon and his crew did more than we expected of them at a great rate, and in just a few hours. They did an amazing job! We realized the next day that they had picked up a bunch of branches on the side of the house and mowed the driveway, which we never asked them to do. We will be using Holiday Going Green for our regular yard maintenance from now on.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
