I'm not sure how to describe this experience fully, but my husband was a professional woodworker to the extent that he was hired at the college level to teach fine woodworking and furniture design. Yet, he had a very rounded grass roots education in most aspects of house renovations. Two years ago, he had an accident that left him a quadriplegic. Because of this, we are downsizing quite a bit and needed someone to help us with some electrical and general handyman tasks so we can get our house up for sale... those things my husband did not get a chance to get to. I am so happy we found Sergio! He was able to complete half the things on our list in a short day for a very reasonable cost. The remainder we are waiting for parts, but I have full faith he will complete them easily and quickly. What floored me was that he found things that our builder should have done but never did completely. That's what I truly appreciate about Sergio. He has seen what the builders do to cut corners and knows how things should really be done. And the solutions he comes up with are extremely practical and affordable. You will not be sorry sorry if you hire him for a job... and have a realistic grasp on how much your problem will cost to fix.

I contacted Woodmont Builders to do a job for a customer we moved out to their area. Within hours of my initial contact, Ron not only contacted the customer, but set up the appointment and within a few days, the job was completed. The customer was left extremely happy with the work conducted and our company is very pleased with the reasonable pricing! I would absolutely recommend using them! Excellent! J.H. - NC.

We needed some large bushes removed from the front and side of our house. They did a great job, removed stumps and filled in holes left by roots. Neighbors already commenting how nice it looks!

Raul painted a bedroom and some other places throughout my home, he was on time that morning, got right to work, and finished well within the time he said he would. He also did a few extras with no problem and did it within the price he quoted, his price is reasonable and his work is grade A+. I plan on hiring him again for another bedroom and pressure wash the house reaal soon. I will also recommend him to family and friends. Thanks again Raul.

Carpet removal and floor refinishing: After we received our quote we notified CMC Flooring that we wanted them to do the job. It took a while to get a start date. Once the start date was confirmed, the project manager and his crew were at my parents' house early and worked non-stop. The crew as so nice and respectful to us. They moved out the furniture, removed the carpet, sanded, stained the living room in one day. The second day they applied "traffic." The third day, the furniture was back in. The floor looks beautiful. The house is over 40 years old and carpet had been on for about 23 years. I wish I had taken before and after pictures. I highly recommend CMC Flooring!! Thank you Chris & Crew!!

My wife and I bought a house 3 years ago with a severely sloped (virtually unusable) backyard. From the beginning we had a vision of terracing it with a retaining wall and creating a beautiful and useable backyard. When we sent this job out to bid on Thumbtack I had several companies come out and from the first time we met Rob I had a great feeling about him. Rob is a TRUE professional and takes care and pride in his work. You really get the sense that he treats every job as if he was doing the work at his own home. He went above and beyond what we asked of him and even my wife (who is unbelievably picky and detail oriented) could only find wonderful things to say. Not only was he fair in his pricing, diligent and timely in his work, but he communicated his plan every step of the way. To top it off I live in a neighborhood with lots of "concerned" neighbors and I got rave reviewed from the people on my street of how kind, professional and personable Rob and his employees were. I will absolutely call Rob next time we have work and already am planning on the next project! Thank you Rob!!!!

I recently had a painter not show up last minute before I moved furniture into my new house. I contacted Ron through this site and he came out the same to do an estimate the same day. He was able to finish the job before my furniture was moved in and also take care of some other jobs around the house. Ron is easy to talk to and does very good work at a reasonable price. I would not hesitate to hire him again.

Daniel was exceptional. Me and my wife decided we wanted to add some additional shelves in our closets and Daniel came right on time. His pricing was fair and competitive. He also did some additional work for us at my mother in laws house. His work is very very good. Couldn't ask for better service. We will be using his services again really soon.

Pull Contracting Services built us a wooden picket fence with two gates. It looks great and was completed in 3 days. Bill was very professional from the start and his prices are very reasonable, especially, given the high quality of work completed. I am very satisfied and would hire Pullen Contracting and Bill for future house projects!

Hired Dan to prime and paint a garage. The builder left it fairly rough, and Dan did an excellent job finishing it. He also installed baseboard. The job was so well done I felt compelled to give him a bit more $ for his effort. Thanks Dan - would hire you again in a second.

We hired Raleigh Property Services to clean up and weather proof our basement. Our house was built in 1942 and had years of dirt and debris that had collected in the basement. When he came to give us the estimate, Mike pointed out all the holes and areas where water was getting in and contributing to the mud and dirt that was collecting. He and his team worked diligently to not only clean the basement but to fix the root of the problem which were the structural issues. He was great to work with, punctual, reliable, and knowledgeable. I strongly recommend Raleigh Property Services.

Millwork Design was brought in to refurbish our employees architectural areas. Desks and built-ins were constructed to match our company standards. Our offices reside in an old 1906 house so the floors are more than uneven to say the very least. Our built-in's are seamless and covered this building's inadequacies beautifully. The work was done in the evening so that daily work flow was never interrupted. Thank you Scott.

I went with my gut instinct and chose Kimberley and Patrick to re-tile my guest bathroom floor. They were quick to respond and answered all of my questions. The thing that set them apart from the rest was that they eased my concern about leaving subcontractors at my house to help with the job. They assured me that it would just be the two of them, and they held to their word. They estimated how long the job would take, and they worked very hard to make that happen. Highly pleased and definitely have them on my "call list" should I need any other projects completed (which knowing me...I will!). Great job, guys!

Arthur did an amazing job at a very reasonable price. I asked for a quote on removing popcorn ceilings, normally a very messy, multi-step process, that can take more than a day. Arthur's technique is SO much better. He prepped and scraped, but not totally smooth, then did several coats of joint compound perfectly smooth and finished, then he painted. My dining room was done in less than 8 hrs, start to finish! I will definitely be hiring him to redo the ceilings throughout the rest of my house.

TEW Design Studio helped me bring my kitchen back to life. We bought a beautiful house built int he 70's and wanted to keep the feel of the original design but add our own personality to it. Rima and her team were able to work with our budget and guide us with making the right selections. The services provided were amazing and made the stress of this process so much easier knowing that we were amazing and made the stress of this process so much easier knowing that we have a team that has our back. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
