Introduction: Essay Coach, Teacher, College Counselor and published poet, Courtney Shelton provides college admissions guidance to clients of all ages and backgrounds. She has a B.A. in Philosophy from Trinity University and an M.S. in English Education from the University of Tennessee. Thirty years of experience and commitment make working with Courtney enjoyable as well as productive. I am a former colleague and have maintained contact with Courtney for over a decade. She is professional and responsible, and her approach to this process is student-centered. She doesn't take a cookie-cutter approach to working with students -- she discovers their needs, their interests, and their values and helps them to find the best fit!

Courtney, gets right to the important issues in preparing students. She knows the intricacies and fine points in creating the best applications. Her mentoring and essay coaching allow students to achieve their full potential well in advance of applications deadlines.

Courtney taught both my son and daughter high school English. Not only did they both score a 4 on their A.P. English exams but they were also far more prepared for college writing than other students who did not have “Ms. S.” The writing tool she uses to teach essay writing is invaluable. Both of my children know how to organize their essay long before they write. Courtney's personality is also the perfect balance between tough and nurturing. Both children still fondly share classroom teachable moments. Thank you!

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I have both package pricing and hourly rates ($225/hour).

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I meet for thirty minutes with parents before students begin any college admissions service. We determine what services, if any, would be a good match. I also include a free 40-page College Handbook I wrote to outline the process from start to finish. I rely on a teamwork approach so the more parents and students know, the more efficient the application process becomes. Once we begin, students and I meet bi-weekly with clear homework assignments students complete in between sessions. Both students and parents receive weekly emails to ensure the application process moves forward and expectations are communicated. I prefer phone calls over Skype because I find the phone less distracting when attempting to generate ideas. I use Zoom and Skype during key moments. Students and I usually emails drafts of writing assignments back and forth until we reach a final draft.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a B.A. in philosophy from Trinity University and an M.S. in English Education from the University of Tennessee. I am a published poet and have been accepted into numerous prestigious writing workshops such as Bread Loaf and Sewanee. I have past certifications in Secondary English in numerous states.
