Tom contacted me directly from a roofing request I had listed on Thumbtack. After meeting Tom, I found him to be very personable and was easy to discuss the roof replacement with. Being as thorough as I am with big spends such as this, I asked him if he would refer other recent jobs Grayco had done in the area and he gladly did so. After I spent a some time looking at about a half dozen homes in the local area, I was pleased with what I saw. I decided at that point to have Grayco replace my roof. Within a week, the roofing crew showed up bright and early to start the job. They were very organized and had everthing on site ready to go. They did not miss a beat all day and stayed until the job was done, shortly before the sun went down. I was very pleased with the final outcome, as the crew did a great job. They also did a good job cleaning up debris around the house when they finished. If you are looking for a quality contractor that offers quality work at a fair price, don't hesitate to get in touch with Tom.

Kevin has been our go to handyman over the past few years and we have been extremely pleased with his work. For two unhandy people (my husband and I), its so nice to know and trust someone who can get a job done and at a reasonable price! We've used Kevin to replace outdoor deck boards and steps, roof repairs, drywall repair and paint, fixing loose gutters, and a handful of other fixes around our house. Would highly recommend using Kevin at McToolman if you are looking for a skilled, reliable, friendly, and honest handyman!

Paul Gibson is an excellent contractor that strives to fully satisfy. He and his crew are hardworking craftsmen. The end result was everything I was hoping for. More than his ability to get the job done, is his honesty and integrity. The job was completed without any problems. He honored all deadlines and promptly completed the job. My roofing repairs were reviewed by a structural engineer who said his work was “PERFECT”. Dealing with Paul was a pleasure I would happily recommend Paul Gibson.

I've had the pleasure of working with JW Services twice now. They replaced a couple skylights and repaired "the other guys" shingle installation error. Both times John and his crew worked quickly and professionally to repair the problems. The work was done to my satisfaction and at an excellent cost. I'm an insurance adjuster and handle hundreds of claims annually. Folks ask me daily who would I recommend, easy: If it were my house, I'd call John Worden.

I had been consulting with Phillip at RR Construction Group about a bathroom remodeling project when Hurricane Matthew hit. I texted Phillip and asked if he could help us with some storm restoration work repairing garage siding and framing and replacing roof shingles and outdoor light all damaged in the storm. Phillip came immediately to look at the damage, offered us an estimate on the spot (a very fair price) and was there with a crew to make the repairs days later. Everything was complete in two days and was absolutely excellent. Our neighbors were impressed with the work they saw going on and have asked us for RR Construction Group contact information for projects they need to have done. We look forward to working with RR Construction Group on more projects in the near future.

Travis was great! He met me and my husband at the property (pre-purchase) and gave us a detailed estimate. After interviewing and receiving quotes from several contractors, we selected Travis, post purchase, based on experience and overall credentials. About the job: Travis installed shingles on the front portion of our home, ~25%. As a new home owner, without much history on the 10 year old home, Travis did a lot of research to determine the original shingle manufacturer, and installed those shingles. Once complete, the color was a little-off, due to heat and natural discoloration, but not by much. Unsatisfied with the color, Travis continued his search for a better shingle color match. He brought samples and we agreed upon a new color. He promptly removed the recently installed shingles, at no additional cost and he was right, the color match was much closer! If you are looking for a great contractor, who will go above and beyond...I believe you can't go wrong with J Travis Swain Const. Thanks Travis, for doing an excellent job!

I am very pleased with the installation of my new roof by Charlotte Turn Key Contractors. They were very professional and helpful with getting my hail damage repaired. I was amazed that I even had damage, I was even more surprised at the clean-up after the job was completed. Thank you CTK, for being a company we could trust each step of the way.

I was looking for a quality roofer that could bring back to life a building on the property that was once used as an office and storage building for my fathers business before he died. The building had gone thru a period of some neglect and when a storm came thru and damaged the roof it got even worse. Expedited Roofing (Greg Hafford) won a competitive bid against several contractors. He was not the low bidder nor the highest bidder. However, I was impressed with his understanding of the problems with the building and his recommendations for repair to bring this building back to life. Greg installed a quality dimensional residential roofing shingle seem with warranty and a cold applied single ply system on the flat portion of the roof. Both were high quality installations from start to finish, taking only a few days for complete tear-off, rafter repair, new decking installation, debris removal & roofing installation. I highly recommend Greg Hafford for his professional installation and his quick reliable services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
