You can't do better than Gillaspie Handyman Building & Maintenance. Nick Gillaspie is a true professional with an artist's eye. He recently completed a job for our family, rebuilding our house in Dilworth which was over 100 years old and in very rough condition. Before we started with Nick, a real estate agent told us that it was a tear-down. Now that Nick has finished his work, it's structurally sound and beautiful. As someone who's done a little bit of construction and carpentry myself, I know good work when I see it. Nick can do just about anything in the building trades himself and do it well: frame and finish carpentry, drywall, flooring, tile work, painting, roofing, landscaping. But, when extra help is needed, he hires the best. His crews are mature, very hard working and fun to hang out with. Nick himself is a pleasure to work with, a really nice guy with a good sense of humor. He's a family man with a serious work ethic. He talked through different possibilities for solving construction problems and cleared every major decision with me in advance. He worked hard to find the least expensive solution to problems that could have been costly. And he came up with creative ideas for how to make a very old house not just functional, but a real pleasure to look at and live in. I'd work with him again any time, for any kind of job. If you're looking for someone for any job, large or small, and would like a reference about Nick Gillaspie and Gillaspie Handyman Building & Maintenance, please email me at sikahn@bellsouth.net with your phone number, and I'll give you a call.

Bob Blake did an “attic build-out” for us in our new home, including framing and installing a custom sized door and installing some plywood flooring in the attic. Bob and a helper did a fine job – he was reliable, skilled, and conscientious. When there were a couple of adjustments to be made to complete the job, Bob made sure that they were accomplished in a timely way, to our satisfaction. We found Bob’s price to be better than most, and we are very pleased with the results. I would gladly hire him again for home improvement or repair.

I needed to have a small area of drywall in a bathroom replaced and prepped for paint. This work was nicely accomplished. I asked if they could remove existing wall paper from the walls and prep the remaining walls for paint. This task seemed to be a bit more work than they anticipated. I was willing to pay extra over their original quoted price but I could tell by the way things were going, this was not going to be an acceptable finish and I would need to call in a more professional contractor. I also had them hang an exterior, antique door to replace the existing front door. This was accomplished without any problems. Being a mechanical contractor, I am aware of almost every aspect of the contracting business. One of those aspects is the danger of exceeding the capabilities of those performing the work. G & I appeared to be one man (the owner), one son and a woman who may or may not have been connected to the owner in some capacity. The owner and son spoke and understood English; the woman however had difficulty (the only reason I mention this is because in the contracting business, if the customer is English and not fluent in Spanish, instructions can be misconstrued if not given to the right individual). The price quoted was fair for what they did. I just wished they had been capable of satisfactorily completing the job. Now I have to hire someone else to remove the residual wall paper and glue and prep the wall for paint.

I obtained quotes from several painting companies in the Charlotte area, and ultimately decided to use BWH Services due to Ben Hamrick’s professionalism, the company’s reasonable pricing, and seeing their paint work that had been done in another person’s home. I hired BWH Services to paint all of the interior walls in my new construction home, and my experience was great. The job took approximately 4 days. The crew was polite, and covered our brand new flooring very well and cleaned up after themselves when the job was done. My only request at the final walkthrough was for an additional coat of paint on a very dark color that we chose to use in one room, which Ben took care of immediately on that same day. Our home looks beautiful with freshly painted walls and I would definitely use BWH Services again and recommend them to friends and family. Thanks, Ben! -Lauren Mikulan

I am new to this state having just moved from CT. I was looking to have my entire house interior painted. Jonathan was the first to respond. He was polite and courteous. He gave me a reasonable price and I hired him. He started within 2 days. His work was excellent and done to my specifications. His crew was efficient and courteous. I was so impressed I hired him for putting up a new fence. Anyone looking for a painting contractor I highly recommend Jonathan Salazar at JS Master Construction!!

Dan and his team are AMAZING and I feel so grateful to have found them! They are excited to work on my home which included almost an entire remodel...Removing walls in the kitchen for an open floorpan, completely remodeling the kitchen, moving a bathroom, moving the laundry room upstairs and creating a mudroom in it's place. Building into unused attic space to create a walk in closet and bathroom in my daughter's bedroom and remodeling and rearranging our master bathroom. Not to mention all the new flooring, cabinets, and drywall where there was once popcorn ceilings. And they were EXCITED to do it. Most people I interviewed were overwhelmed at the task or WAY too expensive. He was priced fairly yet the work quality is far superior to other remodeled homes I have seen. Don't even waste your time with other companies. I love that I felt like we were working together as a team and he was always willing to spend time with me making sure I felt comfortable with each step!

Wow, a contractor that shows up when he says he will and does excellent work. Carl installed tile landings in front of all my entry ways, replaced light fixtures, and installed a backsplash. Excellent job. Will have him install my flooring and eventually finish my master bath. I highly recommend him.

We are currently doing some work on our bathroom and needed to have him come out and install a new faucet on our bathtub. We needed him right away so that the contractor doing the floor and shower installation could proceed and move forward with tile work. He was able to work with us and get the job done very quickly so that the other work being completed would not have to stop. I appreciated the fact that he was able to get there so quickly and do the job as quickly as he did. We will definitely use your services again in the future.

We were absolutely thrilled with Paul and his team. A tree fell on our garage and completely destroyed the roof, so I wrote to several contractors on ThumbTack to find a contractor to do the repairs. Paul responded very quickly, set up a time to survey the damage right away, and had an estimate of repair costs to me by that same evening. He corresponded with our insurance representatives to work out any discrepancies between their estimate and his, and as a result they agreed to pay for the full cost of the repairs with no issue. Paul and his guys worked extremely quickly to get the repairs done; I was honestly blown away by how much progress they made once they started working! Additionally, my neighbor, who is a sweet old guy that's restored many, many homes on his own, made a point of telling me that he'd kept a close eye on the repairs as they were being done and was happy to report that Paul's Contracting had done a very good job, in his opinion. Additionally, Paul is just a real nice guy and was extremely professional and courteous throughout. I highly, highly recommend hiring this company.

Jennsey and Chris were amazing from start to finish. Listened to me and my concerns and advised properly. They not only meet my expectations when we met to go over the job but the price was outstanding. Scheduling was quick turn around. They worked hard and installed my entire home in a day. When finished went over any thing they thought I’d need to know due to my house being a complete Reno. Cleaned up was impressive as well. Not one of my trade contractors has cleaned up that well. They helped me make decisions up until install day, Jennsey was always there to text and help...very responsive!! I can’t say enough wonderful things about these guys. I will be Referring them to everyone I can. Thanks Jennsey, Chris and Daniel for a job well done.

I rarely leave reviews but wow. Genesis Wood Flooring is the epitome of professionalism. The president Doug Williams came with his crew the first day and walked me through the process and helped me select a stain color. They sanded and stained the first day and Mr. Williams came for three days after applying a coat of polyurethane each day. Mr, Williams extremely courteous and even replaced my air conditioners air filters the day after the sanding. I had a few questions through the process and Mr. Williams was quick to respond. He and his crew did a great job. We are so happy and impressed with how the project turned out. Thank you Genesis wood flooring for your hard work and level of professionalism. If you are looking for a wood flooring company this is the one. I have had several projects done on my house and this is hands down the best company I have ever worked with.

Bryan did a beautiful job moving the bathtub and completing my shower tile where another contractor had left me in the lurch with shoddy work. Bryan also discovered and repaired a badly leaking drain that several others had missed. He even worked through the weekend because he knew I had been without a useable shower for quite some time. Thanks Bryan!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
