We are very pleased with our choice of Frank to do the job of putting together and installing our IKEA kitchen. Anyone who has put together IKEA furniture before knows it's quite a task! He is a family-owned business and works wonderfully with his son and wife. It was a pleasure getting to know them, all while watching our kitchen come together! Frank is thorough and precise about his decisions, always making sure we were happy. He saved us a good chunk of money, costing significantly less than the cost of the IKEA installers, while still doing a professional job. Best of all, we created a friendship with him and his family. They were so sweet to our 5 & 2 year old sons and were beyond trustworthy. Sometimes when you hire someone to do work in your home that requires a few days to accomplish, you can't wait to just have it done and have 'strangers' out of your house. I can honestly say that it was hard to say goodbye to him and his family when the job was done. Thank you Frank! We would do it all over again if we had to. We will add photos of the finished kitchen when our backsplash is done later this week!

Jose installed us kitchen bar pendants, he was able to come up with a creative solution on how to do that and minimize the damage to wall & ceiling. Very happy about the result, and the price is well justified. He also did install us a fan in a kids room and a garage outlet. Both worked out very well.

Joe and Tina were a pleasure to work with. This was my first home and I was so overwhelmed when it came to changing the floors to what I wanted and understanding why other companies cost so much. Tina took the time to assist me with purchasing my carpet, and took many phone calls from me about the laminate I was desperately seeking out. Joe and his crew were clean, respectful of my belongings, and stayed on schedule (which is a dream in construction). This team is extremely knowledgeable and down to earth, and I have already referred him to several co-workers looking for new flooring. The wood laminate looks wonderful, as does the carpet in the living room, hall and stairs, and I was able to save some money. I am now looking forward to him installing tile in the kitchen soon!

We had a complete renovation of our house - outside and inside paint, kitchen renovation, new carpets and hardwoods were redone, new AC installed etc - in short a relatively big project. We were overseas during the project so it was very important that our contractor was dependable and responsive. Ben was excellent at communicating with us without delay. He was clear on what could be done and what could not and his advise was much appreciated. The quality of work has been excellent and the house sold after 14 days in the market.

I worked with Jeff for crown molding and wainscoting. Jeff was extremely thorough threw out the whole process. He came over to get all measurement and my exact goals so we were on the same page with the design. His custom work turned out beautiful and I'm so happy with the outcome. Will be referring him to my family and friends.

James Cleaning Services showed up on time, they listened to everything I asked and left my home spotless. When I returned from the movies to review the work the only thing left were the windows, which were being cleaned inside, and out. Floors were great, kitchen sparkled, blinds were dusted and even the little nook between the door and the floor transition was clean. I plan on using the service once a month, at least, perhaps going to once every three weeks.

Bruce artistically created custom wainscoting in my dining room that more than exceeded expectations. He was courteous and professional throughout the project and adapted easily to changes. Bruce takes great pride in his work and the result was clearly reflective of that.

I hired Countryside Home Tech initially just to do several built in bookshelves in my home office and some custom wainscoting in my foyer and a custom accent wall in my dining room, however after visiting his website to see his work and speaking with him in person, my wife and I decided to also reface our kitchen cabinets from a dark wood to a creamy white with a slight brown accent. I first have to say that everyone that worked in my house with Bob was professional, neat, respectful and just an overall pleasure to have in your home. The work of the carpenters that did the custom bookshelves and wainscoting was impeccable, precise and most of all they were diligent, efficient and quick. Bob literally transformed the entire 1st floor of our house with his attention to detail, craftsmanship and perfection, and I am so very appreciative and thankful for the outstanding work that he did. I received about 7 estimates from different contractors before hiring Bob and I now know that we made the right choice. Thank you Bob! I WILL definitely hire Bob again for more projects down the road.

Tom came out and replaced our rotted deck that was falling a part with a brand new beautiful deck. My wife and I were beyond pleased with the finished product and we walk out on it every morning thrilled that we hired Tom. They paid close attention to every detail and kept thinking of ways to improve the layout to make it more functional. I have plenty of more projects around the house and look forward to working with these guys again!

Dan and his team are AMAZING and I feel so grateful to have found them! They are excited to work on my home which included almost an entire remodel...Removing walls in the kitchen for an open floorpan, completely remodeling the kitchen, moving a bathroom, moving the laundry room upstairs and creating a mudroom in it's place. Building into unused attic space to create a walk in closet and bathroom in my daughter's bedroom and remodeling and rearranging our master bathroom. Not to mention all the new flooring, cabinets, and drywall where there was once popcorn ceilings. And they were EXCITED to do it. Most people I interviewed were overwhelmed at the task or WAY too expensive. He was priced fairly yet the work quality is far superior to other remodeled homes I have seen. Don't even waste your time with other companies. I love that I felt like we were working together as a team and he was always willing to spend time with me making sure I felt comfortable with each step!

Gregg did a fantastic job! He came to my house right away to see what I would like done, and had the estimate to me in writing an hour or two later that night. I originally had him come to close in a wall that had pocket doors, but we ended up doing much more. Gregg was very patient and willing to go the extra mile as I kept adding on additional jobs. He was knowledgeable about what would fit where, what would look best, and receptive my any concerns/changes I had on my end. After all was said and done, I ended up having Gregg remove the pocket doors & install drywall (spackled & sanded to be paint-ready), install chair rail, and install custom picture frame wainscoting in my office. He also installed crown molding in two bedrooms, my downstairs hallway & foyer, and more detailed and custom picture frame wainscoting throughout the entire downstairs hallway & foyer. I ended up having a bit of chair rail left over, and Gregg installed that in my kitchen so that it would not go to waste. Gregg did great work at a fair price, was detailed-oriented, receptive to my customization/changes, and was fairly priced. I would recommend Gregg to anyone looking to do work on their home and I will definitely be calling him for any future projects!

Rick Hall did a great job on tiling my bathroom and kitchen. More importantly, his customer service was outstanding. I got several quotes before meeting Rick, but I could never get a call back from other tile people. Rick was extremely responsive! He always responded within minutes of a request. Further, when I asked him to fix a minor issue after he had finished, he was back the next business day.

Replaced 13 old metal framed sliding windows with new Windcore sliding windows. Fantastic product, great fit, and tight seal. In addition to the new windows, the very best part of the project was the installation team! Kevin and his crew were the best. Highly recommend these folks for your next window replacement project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
