Great job and FAST! I own and manage a few investment properties, and a tenant moved out of a house I wanted to fix up to sell. Trying to hit the spring buying market, I scrambled to get things going fast and thus was very unorganized. Contacted Gerald Crawford via thumbtack message over the weekend 4/26, he met me fast, was on time as promised Monday a.m. 4/27. He gave me a fair price, accepted a deposit, emphasized that I didn't have to pay him the balance until I was completely satisfied. He has delivered on that promise. At first, I asked for all 1790 sq ft interior to be painted excluding one bedroom and the laundry room (was thinking of just touching them up). His team started 4/29 (Wednesday) as promised, and was already 95% done by Friday 5/1 even though I threw in/added the laundry room to his list. Since I dove in without a solid plan of all the different jobs I needed done (flooring, cabinets, etc), I found myself changing plans a few times on Gerald, but and his crew were always kind, accommodating and professional. Also very PATIENT with me. I also loved the fact that he uses two coats of high quality Sherwin Williams Cashmere brand paint instead of a quick one-coat job with cheapo paint like other painters I have used, and it was included in his price. He also volunteered to fix a few ceiling stains and cracks at no extra charge. He was to come back Monday to put shelves back/a few small details (a crack in the ceiling), But, my agent advised me to replace the countertops, I pulled them out over the weekend, found some old wall damage from previous owner. I knew he could fix that for me as well, also decided over the weekend that I wanted the extra bedroom painted after all. Since I had floor people coming on Monday, I asked him to hold off a few days and come back to do the small things and new job (the extra bedroom, wall repair behind countertops, etc), all at once. Still waiting on the floor people to finish, looking forward to working with Gerald and his crew again. I am just so impressed by what a neat, tidy job he has already done, and you KNOW he's a saint for putting up with my constantly changing plans. Will take a photo to post of his tidy work and add it later, if I'm allowed. Gerald Crawford is my "go-to" guy from now on. Awesome Gerald, thanks!

Fred Heath is a true PROFESSIONAL painter. He went above and beyond in meeting our expectations. We had 2/3 of our apartment painted (walls and trim). The completed job was perfect with no touch-ups needed. I have been through many painters and Fred is by far the best painter I have hired. I will recommend him to my friends and use him again!

I am almost at a loss for words when trying to review First Painting. First, let me tell you about the quoting process. John responded very quickly when I put in my request for a quote on Thumbtack - almost instantly, in fact. He was courteous, polite, professional, and he came to the house to take a look at what our plans were. My wife was very impressed that he took his shoes off when he entered our home, which we took as a good sign that he would be treating our home with a lot of respect. John provided a detailed quote, and gave us a price that was significantly better than the competitors. On top of that, he was able to get a crew together to start the project within just a couple of days - and keep in mind this was the week before Christmas! Once the First Painting crew arrived (right on time, mind you!) they got to work immediately. First, they went around the entire house to patch nail holes and repair any imperfections in the walls. They put down tons of drop cloths and plastic to protect our belongings, plus they were nice enough to move our furniture for us so they could get to the walls. They made sure that none of our furniture was damaged, and that no paint got on the floors or other places it wasn't supposed to be. Our project included painting our garage, mud room, kitchen, living room, dining room, office as well as all of the bedrooms and bathrooms. In addition to that, we asked John and his crew to paint our cabinets. Let me tell you, we COULD NOT be happier with the outcome of the project! All of the walls look perfect and brand new! The cabinets look like they belong in an article in a magazine! We are simply ECSTATIC with the quality of work! The entire project took just under three days, and each day the crew showed up exactly on time and ready to get to work. Some more perks to working with John and First Painting: - They were able to get us a great price on our paint, and brought a receipt for the paint purchase - John is VERY responsive - John is also extremely respectful of your home; he makes sure that the crew takes their shoes off before entering, and they go to great lengths to protect your furniture and flooring - First Painting offered by far the BEST PRICE of all the quotes we received through Thumbtack - John is an excellent communicator, and really is engaged when you're discussing the project with him - Each day when the crew was packing up, John took me around to each room to ensure that they had cleaned everything up and to review their work. If anything needed touching up or cleaning, they jumped right on it All in all, honestly folks, I have hired several painters and other professionals through Thumbtack. I have NEVER received this level of service from anyone, much less at the lowest price I was quoted. John is building his small business, and I can guarantee you that you won't be disappointed if you give him a try. There is obviously a reason that this company has almost a perfect 5 star rating, and it's because they are VERY good at what they do! I've attached some pictures of our project below, please forgive the poor quality pictures but the results are unbelievable! I am so thankful to John and his crew that I told him that he can use me as a referral for any future projects he is bidding. Give First Painting a try, you will NOT be disappointed!

From the initial quote via Thumbtack to project completion, Ben was very responsive and did a wonderful job painting our new home. We even requested one of the walls be painted in a striped pattern and they look fantastic. Even when there was a slight issue, Ben was quick to resolve it. One of the painters accidentally chipped the corner of one of the bathroom mirrors he took down when painting and Ben replaced the entire mirror free of charge. Price was very competitive and we would recommend his services to anyone looking for interior painting services.

The work Lin and his painters did was great. Billy was wonderful to work with and went back over certain areas that needed more attention. The price was fair and all the rooms we had painted look great.

Fine Finishes helped to improve upon some previous work from other contractors and painters that wasn't up to my expectations. Upon giving me an estimate for the initial work, the owner indicated he could begin immediately (and he did!). Having seen the quality of their initial work, I have since engaged this company for additional repair and painting. They've done a range of work for me now, all of which I'm very happy with. Their work ranged from interior wall, ceiling and trim painting, cabinet refinishing to exterior siding washing, replacement and painting. They were even able to repair and paint some minor wood damage on my windows as well as hang a new light fixture. The owner and his team put a lot of pride into their work, something I wish more of the contractors I'd worked with did. Highly recommended!

Promptnesss is a deal killer with me. Not only were the painters on time they arrived a few minutes early. They worked continuously until the job was completed and cleaned up afterwards. The paint job itself is fantastic. They really deserve 6 stars. I hope they will be available for my next project.

We hired Gustavo to paint the chimney stack of our home, due to being unable to reach the high areas. He was very quick in scheduling a time to come and give us an estimate, as well as complete the project. Although rain delayed our project a couple times, Gustavo always made a point to touch base with us and set another time that worked with our schedule. He was prompt, professional and cleaned up the work area after completion. The paint job looks phenomenal and he took his time to ensure it was nothing less than that. Extremely grateful for Gustavo's painting services and we highly recommend him to others! He does interior/exterior painting as well as carpentry work. You won't be disappointed!

I cannot write enough great things about Valle Painting! They were efficient and did quality work. I think the best thing about them is that they guarantee their work. I found a few areas that needed touch ups, and he promptly sent someone from his crew to complete the job without a question. I will definitely hire them in the future for any other jobs!

Luna and his team of painters at Queen City Painters could not have done a better job of o would have rubbed a magic lamp and wished my entire house to be perfectly painted!! Pleasant to work with, professional, and extremely cost effective compared to some other quotes I had gotten. I would not hesitate to hire Luna and his crew for any job big or small. My job was big; 3800 square foot home which I closed on on Monday and by Friday the entire home had no trace of "builder beige" left..... they finished ahead of schedule and had no problem with me adding the garage on to stage scope of work at the last minute.

Great Experienced Professional Exterior Painters! We are very pleased with Jackson’s workers and services he’d provided. He showed up promptly on time to give us a quote, worked very fast to finalize the details on what is asked and cost estimate. We were very happy with the process and would highly recommend Jackson and his team to others needing paint project. The project took about 7 business days. They taped the windows and doors and covered my newly remodeled deck so paint doesn’t get on it. They worked through painting the trims and edges with double coats of white paint. They sprayed the siding of the home.... which gave it a nice even coat! They painted the beams underneath the deck as well and garage door. We are very happy with the results. Once complete, we finalized and did a walk through for touch up and clean up on recess paints etc.... surprisingly ... there wasn’t a lot of excess mess left. He even pressured wash and cleaned the driveway for us because of some paint that was dropped by his workers. Some of his workers do no speak English but My communication with Jackson was sufficient enough to convey what my needs were with the project and the information trickles down. Again, VERY happy with his work and team! He’s very pleasant to deal with and very customer service oriented! We feel like we have a brand new home! Thanks Jackson and Team!!!

Antonio did an amazing job on our house! We bought a older home to renovate it. We actual had a hard time picking colors and just the layout of some rooms. We had multiple painters and we didn’t like any of their ideas. Antonio came and we loved his ideas and we couldn’t be more happier with the results. WERE SO HAPPY !

Josh and his helper, Scott, were very professional, friendly, and polite. They did an outstanding job repairing and painting our walls, which were not in good shape at all when he started! We did our research before hiring Josh, and he is priced more reasonably than others in the field. If you're considering hiring a painter, no need to look any farther - hire Josh! When he repaired and sanded the walls, he put up plastic and we did not have dust in our house. He makes sure everything is cleaned up before he leaves each day. We were extremely happy with Josh, and we will be having him back to paint our kitchen next!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
