I have really enjoyed my experience at Checkmat Charlotte. The workout is fun and intense. Professor pushes everyone hard and encourages along the way, its a really great atmosphere, and we always end the day on a positive note. Highly recommended

I've started BJJ much later in life. I've been to some schools where they think proper training is getting beat up for 6 months. Checkmat Charlotte is nothing like that. Good teaching/training of the basics. You get to build a good foundation from the first class. The school and other student - there is no ego trips. Everyone is there to learn / have a good time / and enjoy the sport. This is especially important if you're older (like me) and training with younger adults.

The saying "once you've walked in the door, you will not want to leave" is a truth about our school. I am almost a year into my training, with some short breaks because of life, and I've always been welcomed and included. We've got a diverse team full of individuals with great personalities and strong skill sets. Each person, Professor on down, has something to teach you about jiu jitsu that will bleed into your everyday life. This gym is an opportunity that you need to take advantage of.

Professor Michael Allen is a great instructor. He is a great coach and has an eye for detail. He doesn't just teach the techniques that he feels like works for him but techniques that works for the individual. The Checkmat family is welcoming. Whether you are just starting your jiu jitsu journey or have years of experience, you will always walk away learning and benefiting from coming to Checkmat Charlotte.

Michael Allen is an outstanding teacher. He is able to adapt his teaching style to suit a particular student's attributes. He creates an environment geared toward learning. It is not an intermediating school. Everyone support each other. All skill levels are welcome. There are serious competitors as those who are just looking to learn some jiu-jitsu for personal growth. Michael is an outstanding teacher and person. He cares about his students and does everything he can to help them on their jiu-jitsu journey. I came in as a 46 year old with no grappling experience. A little over a year later, I have made many good friends there and improved my fitness as well as my grappling tremendously. It has made an incredibly positive impact on my life.
