Jon and his team did an excellent job cleaning out the gutters on our house. They worked quickly, cleaned up the debris from the gutters, and pointed out several issues they saw with the roof and gutters. If we need to have our gutters cleaned again I will be calling Jon.

This was a new experience for me; hiring a contractor out of the blue through an online service (Thumbtack). This was NOT an insurance claim. It was out of pocket for a new roof. I tend to not trust contractors that don't come highly recommended to me but I could not find a recommendation from someone I trust. So this was a bit of leap of faith. Not going to get into the quote process or why I chose Grayco other than to say that their price was very competitive and they agreed to do extra work on the roof, discussed prior to quoting that the other companies excluded or wanted too much $$ for it. Some required a deposit to purchase materials. My decision was a good one. I stayed home the day of the work so my review is from first hand experience. Tom, the salesmen, was there on site for nearly then entire time the roofers were there. What salesman does that? The installers did everything they could to protect my property and landscaping with large tarps. They had a little more than they bargained for when they realized they didn't bring enough roof decking to replace all the rotten places(12 sheets required). My 20 year old house was in worse shape than anyone expected. Tom jumped in one of the installers vans and ran to Lowes to pick up more wood. What salesman does that? He also moved some material from the front yard to the back to help his guys out. What salesman does that? The install went smoothly, all the work looks great. They re-flashed the chimney, properly this time, did the extra work I asked them to do, painted the white vent pipes black to match the roof better and re-installed the satellite dish perfectly positioned (no re-calibration needed). Little things that make a difference. After cleaning up and had everything loaded on their vans they spent a lot of time running magnets over the lawn and driveway to pick up stray nails. A lot of time. I'm not a neat freak but this kind of attention speaks to the professionalism of the crew and the desire to do a thorough job. It was much appreciated. Bottom line: I love my new roof. Very pleased with the install process and can, without hesitation, recommend Grayco. They did a very good job.

I have several properties in and around the Charlotte area and have used Kevin with McToolman services for multiple projects including roof repairs, wood replacement, painting, drywall work, and pressure washing. Kevin is dependable, honest, and always extremely sensitive of my time. He arrives when he says he will and does the work in a timely fashion. Kevin is very fair with his pricing and there are no surprises!!

We had BWH do interior painting and trim, repair drywall from roof leaks, replace rotted exterior trim, and paint all of the exterior trim and some stucco areas. Ben's team of Ronald, Luis and Fabio were easy to work with. They arrived on time and cleaned-up after themselves each day. They were professional, kind and good at what they do. They are skilled at cutting in with the brush and painting nice clean lines around trim. They covered floors and furniture while they painted. There were no accidents. I would recommend BWH for you next interior/exterior painting project. Here's is a smart tip... Be certain of your paint colors before the painting begins. Do not assume a paint color you saw in a friend's home or on a paint card will look the same in your space. The amount of natural light coming into a room can completely change the color. Spend time to buy and apply various samples directly on your walls. Once you are certain of the paint color and sheen you want, then schedule BWH to come paint your walls. It will be done quick and look great! Thank you!! :)

Roof looks great. Have a shallowly sloped carport which was covered in metal vs. shingles, so it doesn't leak, and it paired well w/the shingles I selected.

He did our roof and a section of vinyl siding. He's a nice guy, personable, with a nice crew. He did what he said he would do in the time in which he said he would do it, in the way he said he would do it, for the amount quoted. Sounds ordinary, but that's pretty hard to find nowadays.

Tommy Fincher and his crew have done several remodeling jobs and built a hot tub deck at our home. His crew has also performed quality roofing and commercial construction work for another property for us as well. His high standards, premium construction materials, and attention to detail exceeded our expectation for each job. I would highly recommend this contractor for residential and commercial work.

We hired another contractor to do a major renovation. The GC got lazy and distracted toward the end and we had a long list of things that needed to be fixed or finished, including some trim work, shelving, tight door adjustments, drywall repair and paint. John knocked it all out within a couple days and it looked great. John has also done other handyman tasks for me in the past like microwave install, roof vent install, etc. He is always quick to respond, efficient, and a good communicator.

I was looking for a quality roofer that could bring back to life a building on the property that was once used as an office and storage building for my fathers business before he died. The building had gone thru a period of some neglect and when a storm came thru and damaged the roof it got even worse. Expedited Roofing (Greg Hafford) won a competitive bid against several contractors. He was not the low bidder nor the highest bidder. However, I was impressed with his understanding of the problems with the building and his recommendations for repair to bring this building back to life. Greg installed a quality dimensional residential roofing shingle seem with warranty and a cold applied single ply system on the flat portion of the roof. Both were high quality installations from start to finish, taking only a few days for complete tear-off, rafter repair, new decking installation, debris removal & roofing installation. I highly recommend Greg Hafford for his professional installation and his quick reliable services.

Terry performed a thorough roof inspection and was able to find and repair leaks on the roof that two other contractors could not repair. He took photos of all the trouble areas and identified hail damage that warranted filing a claim with our home owners insurance. Terry met with the insurance inspector and secured approval to replace the roof and the substantial ceiling damage inside. Terry upgraded us to top quality architectural shingles with a lifetime warranty. His crew completed the job in one day and cleaned up everything including cleaning my gutters. They blew off our deck and driveway. The entire experience was professionally handled from start to finish. Terry also was able to save us a significant amount on new gutters to compliment the great looking roof. I highly recommend Terry’s expertise to anyone that has roofing concerns. He is very personable and committed to provide the highest level of service.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

      • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

      • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
        • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
      • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
      • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
      • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
      • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
      • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
