Introduction: Although performing on stage was the first musical passion of mine, music education has evolved into a very defining avenue of my career. While honing my abilities as a private drum instructor over the last decade, I have learned that each musician and student has a different personality and different musical goals. I enjoy teaching interested students of all ages, from those who are just beginning to the advanced drummers who wish to reach the next level. My personal goals as a teacher are to emphasize good technique, strong understanding of different tempos and styles, apt reading skills, and using the drums as a vehicle for expressing musicality. Additionally, I truly value each individual and their aspirations as a musician! I conveniently teach in studios across the Triangle, including Durham, Carrboro, and Cary. In some instances, I can arrange home visits. Lessons are scheduled as a weekly meeting and can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes, depending on the student. Rates differ, based on the location and length of our meetings. I am happy to provide further information upon request.

Our 10 year old daughter takes drum lessons with Stephen. He does a great job - he's patient, great with kids, organized and knowledgeable. He does a great job challenging our daughter while making it fun.

I would definitely highly recommend Stephen Coffman for drum lessons. As a true beginner, I have been taking classes for the past several months. The classes are always challenging enough, but still fun and not overwhelming. Stephen is very good about teaching the fundamentals while going at a pace that will work on building confidence. He is very patient on slow days and always positive, which I feel are effective teaching skills for both beginners and advanced students., His musical education and experience are impressive and give him excellent credentials for teaching various styles and levels. My experience has been that of learning the basic fundamentals that will give me a good basis for developing more advanced skills and being able to play for fun while continuing to improve my level of play. Stephen is both an excellent drummer and teacher.

I was new to the drums and took lessons with Stephen for a few months. I don’t think I would have made half the progress I did or had as much fun with anyone else. Stephen is one of a kind and truly one of the best teachers you will find! He figures out what pace suits you best and tailors lessons specifically to your interests and needs. He is relaxed and fun but definitely pushes you to master your fundamentals and grow quickly. In my six months with Stephen, I developed a passions for the drums and had such a unique exposure to music. Highly recommend!!

It's hard to give Stephen a review without sounding hyperbolic, but for good reason. He is professional, patient, skilled, an able teacher, and just a straight up nice guy. Under his guidance, I watched my 14 year old daughter turn from someone who could barely hold a beat into a drummer who can read drum notation and can play almost anything you throw at her in under a year. If a student is dedicated, they WILL succeed with Stephen. His studio is spacious, comfortable, and soundproof, and Stephen did a startlingly good job at transitioning to Zoom when we all had to pivot due to the 'Rona. If you are looking for a drum teacher, you won't find a better one than Stephen. I can't recommend him more. If he has any available slots, you would be wise to sign up for one as soon as possible. He doesn't often have openings, and for good reason. He's tops in his field.

Details: 14 - 17 years old • 0 - 2 yrs of formal training • Understands note durations and rests • Can't read music • Traditional drum kit • Rock • Yes, the student already has drums • 60 minutes • My home, venue, etc. • At the pro’s location
