I'm not sure how to describe this experience fully, but my husband was a professional woodworker to the extent that he was hired at the college level to teach fine woodworking and furniture design. Yet, he had a very rounded grass roots education in most aspects of house renovations. Two years ago, he had an accident that left him a quadriplegic. Because of this, we are downsizing quite a bit and needed someone to help us with some electrical and general handyman tasks so we can get our house up for sale... those things my husband did not get a chance to get to. I am so happy we found Sergio! He was able to complete half the things on our list in a short day for a very reasonable cost. The remainder we are waiting for parts, but I have full faith he will complete them easily and quickly. What floored me was that he found things that our builder should have done but never did completely. That's what I truly appreciate about Sergio. He has seen what the builders do to cut corners and knows how things should really be done. And the solutions he comes up with are extremely practical and affordable. You will not be sorry sorry if you hire him for a job... and have a realistic grasp on how much your problem will cost to fix.

What a great experience it was working with Jaime. The entire process was simple, clear, and efficient. He responded to my request within an hour, came by later that day and gave me a fair quote, and he just finished the job. The entire timeline from introduction to high-level completion was only a few days and everything looks better than I could have imagined. It was for a simple gate to a back deck - a job that I could certainly not have done myself. But Jaime built a well-designed, well-planned, and sturdy gate. I will contact him again for any remodeling or building needs in the future.

Santiago completed a mosaic tile backsplash in my parents' kitchen and did a wonderful job. Our home is older with some foundation problems that have caused some unevenness and odd slants with the cabinetry, but Santiago was able to work around the flaws and make the tile job look excellent! Additionally, he completed a tiling detail based on standard design, but removed the tile and re-tiled the area based on my mother's preference without hesitation. Santiago was very responsive. I posted on Thumbtuck on a Thursday, got a response from him the same day, met with him to review to kitchen that Saturday, and he began the job that Monday and completed it the next day. I will definitely be contacting him again for help with the rest of the home renovations!

Jim's work was impeccable, speedily completed, and very competitively priced. He said to us, "You don't want me in your house for two weeks dragging out this job." But, in truth, wouldn't mind--he's a really fun guy to have around! The job he did for us was a pair of built-in bookshelves. At 10-ft tall and almost 6-ft wide (and with the uneven walls, ceilings, and floors that come with new construction), it was a real task, but Jim was really skilled at troubleshooting issues and finding the appropriate materials. I'm confident that the finished product is far superior to what our custom homebuilder would've built. I can't recommend Jim's work enough, and in fact will be posting his information on our neighborhood list serv, in other words staking our reputation on the quality of his work. Is there really higher praise?

I hired Dan to install a new, permitted, 550sqft freestanding deck. Dan did an excellent job and was very easy to deal with. He showed up every day at the time he communicated, which is not typical of contractors. The project turned out to be much larger than we both anticipated, but Dan stood by the initial estimate on which we shook hands.

3D Remodeling did an outstanding job on the repairs at my home. I had accumulated a list of Things to Do and I needed assistance. The list included repairs to a double wooden gate that was a small project on its own, replacing boards and installing new hinges. They also replaced a new kitchen light, replaced the wall lights outside the garage and on the front porch. In just a few hours they had completed my list of things that I had wanted done for months. I am very happy with the work and would recommend 3D Remodeling to anyone who needs a project completed and wants a dependable, professional job done. 3D Remodeling will be the first call I make for any home repair projects. Michael of New York Renovations left my house a few hours ago and he left an impression that could not be more positive! Before our appt, he kept in contact, was so courteous, fit me in his schedule quickly and showed up on time. I had originally requested one task which he quickly finished and in such a meticulous manner that I asked if he could do another project which he quickly finished so I gave him another one, etc. He looked at a few other projects I need finished and we arranged for him to come back again once he gets those supplies. He was able to do all types of projects and I swear he could probably put an extension on your house in a day and under budget!

We've had a wonderful experience working with Mike. He is observant and detailed. He was able to identify sources of water coming into our basement and fix/add gutters. He and his staff also cleaned our 66 year old basement and left it looking great. He knows a lot about renovation and property maintenance and he is trustworthy. We plan to keep hiring him for home improvement projects.

Millwork Design was brought in to refurbish our employees architectural areas. Desks and built-ins were constructed to match our company standards. Our offices reside in an old 1906 house so the floors are more than uneven to say the very least. Our built-in's are seamless and covered this building's inadequacies beautifully. The work was done in the evening so that daily work flow was never interrupted. Thank you Scott.

I had Anchor Renovation Concepts complete my basement remodel and I couldn't be happier on how it turned out. Better than I could have imagined. Finding a contractor can be complicated. Not only was Gary professional, knowledgeable, responsive, but he also was intuitive which set him apart from the other 3 contractors I was in contact with. He asked questions that made sure we got the best ideas/ layouts for the space we remodeled. If you work with this company, I guarantee you will be blown away by the outcome of work.

We contracted S&R General Contracting to remodel the bathroom and the two bedrooms. Raul accurately assessed our situation and promptly came through with a detailed, thorough estimate for the remodeling.they did a beautiful job, especially with our bathroom. Thank you!

Sta-Bil Construction did a couple of jobs for us including renovating a 3-car garage (turning in to a billiard room) and also adding can lights to our kitchen. The garage conversion was quite extensive with the addition of cabinets, installing drywall, creating and building additional knee walls, upgrading the electrical, painting and trimwork. The project was finished in a timely manner, under budget and the owner, Bill Bradley, was in continual communication with us. We are super pleased and would definitely use Sta-Bil for future projects. Highly recommend.

I've never had a deck. I can count on one hand the number of times I've even sat on a deck. But I've always loved the concept and when presented with the opportunity to fulfill a dream I turned to Thumbtack, quite simply, for its simplicity. That said, I contacted several of the companies listed, S.O.S. Property Services being the one I chose. From the outset, this company stood head and shoulders above the rest. While a couple of the companies were good, one was horrible -- I've reviewed that one here before -- S.O.S. was simply superior. Specifically, when I first made contact with the S.O.S. office I was treated with a level of professional care that reminded me of bygone days. Blanca, the S.O.S. Property Services office manager, made certain my appointment needs were foremost. As we moved forward her follow-ups were so appreciated. Luis, S.O.S.'s owner showed-up exactly as scheduled, went about his business quite efficiently and offered a number of suggestions I, who knew nothing about decks, found not only helpful but cost effective. Luis promised and delivered a quote within 48 hours. While his estimate was below the others, the primary reason I chose S.O.S. was because Luis and his company seemed so easy to work with, were extremely knowledgeable, creative and diligent. The construction of the deck went like clockwork even though I made one major and a couple minor changes along with way. In each and every case, Luis and his team were more than patient and accommodating. Amazingly within three days I was sitting on my new deck. (See photos). All in all, I cannot recommend S.O.S. more highly. Decks are only one of the many construction projects they're prepared to do and while I've yet to use them beyond the deck, Luis is currently preparing the plans to build us a rather large shed. You'll not go wrong contracting with S.O.S. Lee Smith

Kim was nothing short of an asset to our home renovation projects. She listened to out ideas, gave us an amazing proposal and even helped me through all the changes I eventually made just because I had a hard time making up my mind! Her laid back nature paired with her extensive product and design knowledge made it feel like designing with a really smart friend! We would not have the house we have today with out her and I can't wait to bring her on board to tackle even more projects!

Bill replied to our initial request to build a small portico roof over our front door. We had some ideas in mind, but appreciated Bill's honesty that some of our plans may not be best for our house. He worked with us to come up with a better plan, and we could not be happier with it. Since we were impressed with him, we asked him to do other repairs from our inspection report. Bill was hard working, honest and did a thorough job. We will definitely contact him again if needs arise!

I called several contractors (12 to be exact) and received a call-back from eight, one being AMC Contractoring. Carlos, the owner was professional, prompt and thorough; he scheduled someone out to assess the work within a day and showed up himself for most of the work on every day of the project. We hired AMC to get our house ready for sale and Carols respected our budget and event found additional ways for us to save money and make the project better. We had to make a small change to how we wanted to repair some damage, and Carols quickly amended our quote with no delay to the start of the work. I noticed later that some paint in a room looked off and Carlos came out the same day to repaint the room. The thing is, I was mistaken and the room was not part of the original project. Carlos laughed it off and said that it was both of our mistakes and didn't even charge us for the extra room. I've never met a contractor who was willing to build-up a relationship rather than build-up an invoice. For that reason AMC is now working on a project to get my monther's house ready for sale as I write this review. Even better, AMC's cost was competitive (no hidden fees, as was the case with several of the other quotes) and the quality of the work was excellent. We will definitely use AMC's services again in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
