Todd was very quick in responding to my request to repair my shower. While he was there, he also identified another issue that I was unaware of, explained it to me, and repaired that as well. I was so pleased with his work and friendly and professional demeanor that I had him come back out to do some other work on my house - he did a great job pressure washing my house and driveway. I would definitely hire Todd again for other jobs around my house.

Ron and his guy installed two light fixtures and three ceiling fans for me. They did a great job! Were very responsive, on time, and the work was great. One of the ceiling fans needed further adjustment, so he came back and fixed it no problem. Our regular contractor wanted to charge four times what Ron did. I am thrilled to have such great work available at such a reasonable price. Thanks, Ron!

Mr Rooter came through for us in a pinch, when another plumber cancelled on the same day of scheduled service without notification. We needed a kitchen faucet installed (new), a garbage disposal installed (new) and our drain pan changed from a double to a single for our new sink. The office contacted me almost immediately after posting our request for service, and had a plumber out to us in under an hour. Our plumber was courteous, straightforward and got the work done rather quickly. He even alerted me to an issue leftover from some work a contractor had done for us the day prior. He left the area clean and the installation looks really good all around. The cost was much higher than the quoted cost of the plumber who cancelled on us, but I believe now you get what you pay for, and what we were charged is more in line with normal fees for this type of plumbing work.

Things are working great, no issues. he also completed some additional minor things, changed shower heads and fix a tub spout. He was professional and efficient. Very pleased I chose him. Thanks!

Santiago repaired drywall in my garage and painted the entire downstairs of my home. He not only was very easy to deal with but also took every aspect of the job seriously. Being in the service business I know what it means to deliver on your clients expectation and Santiago exceeded mine. He completed the project a day faster than what he estimated with a price that was very reasonable for the work performed. If you are looking for someone that has experience in all aspects of construction without the big contractor feel, this is the guy to hire.

My father-in-law was a well-respected general contractor for the past 50 years, with specialties in masonry, stone work and carpentry. With my husband growing up in the business, he can immediately tell the difference between good and bad contractors. Ron is a very thorough, honest, and true craftsman who did a phenomenal job in remodeling the 1st and 2nd floor of my workshop. There aren’t too many contractors like him these days. Not only did our project surpass our expectations, he stayed on budget and on time. I would highly recommend Ron for you home remodeling needs.

I hired Nick to fix and replace a broken valve in my shower faucet. He was responsive, friendly, fairly priced and did a great job! He even came out on a Friday night in rush hour traffic to make sure I wasn't stuck without water for too long. I would definitely recommend Nick to others and will be calling him again in the future.

The ease of getting quotes and scheduling the work. Communication with contractor was good and work was done well. Contractor was able to flex with my schedule. Better and clear information on daily rates would be good as drive time and such is being factored into the day. Expectations were based on physical time being there.

When my wife and I decided to upgrade the floors in our house, we had three contractors come and evaluate the job to estimate. One never called back, one gave us an estimate, but had the attitude that he didn't care if he got the job or not, and then we met with Jesse of Floors N' More. His communication was first rate. He arrived on time and we discussed what we wanted to do. He measured for precise calculations and that night I had an estimate, a very reasonable estimate. Jesse makes you feel good right away about why you should choose him and his company for the job. We agreed to terms, got on his schedule, and he was there ready to go when the time came. During the whole process he communicated his progress and included images. We checked in on the project a couple of times to view the quality of his work to make sure we were getting what we were paying for. He did not let us down! When the job was done and we saw it complete for the first time, we were ecstatic! He did a great job. No matter who you contract with, you never know what kind of job will be done until it's complete. With Jesse, you don't have to be concerned. It gets done right! Thanks Jesse for a job well done and we are looking forward to working with you on other projects discussed.

We hired JFItzgerald to do several jobs at once. Roofing, tearing down and rebuilding a deck, tearing down old fencing and putting in new fencing, vinyl siding repair are just some of the items. Everything was completed in a timely manner and looks great! Not only was John very professional, he provided great customer service and was a very tidy worker. There was never any trash or debris left lying around. We will definitely hire him again in the future and will recommend him to anyone looking for a General Contractor.

I hired Dan to install a new, permitted, 550sqft freestanding deck. Dan did an excellent job and was very easy to deal with. He showed up every day at the time he communicated, which is not typical of contractors. The project turned out to be much larger than we both anticipated, but Dan stood by the initial estimate on which we shook hands.

After my home was broken into just days before Christmas, without hesitation, Mike was on location and worked quickly to get my home secure. He was attentive, listened to and addressed my concerns and was clear on what the very reasonable costs for repair would be. Beyond that, he was very conscientious about making it right, attentive to detail ensuring the new door was properly installed and erasing any evidence that a break-in had occurred. As the original door had been installed without proper flashing by another contractor, Mike not only replaced the damaged door, but corrected the developing wood rot and emplaced the flashing as it should have been. As I was working out of town, communication was outstanding, professional. He sent frequent photos of the entire process from tear down to final touches. Attention to detail: setting the new door ensuring it was plumb, no airgaps in the weather seal, installing the new siding (to replace what was damaged by break-in), caulking, painting the sheetrock and the external siding and clean up. Break-ins are violating and unfun. Mike really took the emotional edge off of it, getting the job done and done right at a very reasonable rate. I would certainly call upon Raleigh Property Services again in a heartbeat should the need arise.

We were preparing our home for sale and knew we had some windows with broken seals that needed to be replaced. Hellis Family Glass was very responsive to our request to come out, was prompt with a quote and even helped bring another contractor to the table to repair some rotted wood. The only thing that could have gone better was to have had a better explanation for how long the ordering of the glass, getting it in and then scheduling the work was going to take, in advance. We were surprised when it took more than three weeks to get it done.

We had a great experience with Jordan from Carolina Building Pros! He’s bright, punctual, professional, tidy, respectful, knowledgeable, easy to communicate with, is great at what he does, and has a great eye for detail. As an interior designer myself who’s worked with many contractors in the past, a good eye for detail is hard to come by, and Jordan has got it! He renovated a few attic spaces into a fun playroom for our son, a storage space for media players, and a place to mount our TV. We are so happy with his work and would recommend/hire him again in a heartbeat!

I have used Zuniga Construction for the last four years to build wooden handrails on my front porch, install storm doors, make exterior repairs, adjust gutters, regrout shower, build a wooden fence, interior / exterior painting, and pressure washing.  I recommend they in the highest possible terms because they are skilled, dependable, and reasonably priced.

I called several contractors (12 to be exact) and received a call-back from eight, one being AMC Contractoring. Carlos, the owner was professional, prompt and thorough; he scheduled someone out to assess the work within a day and showed up himself for most of the work on every day of the project. We hired AMC to get our house ready for sale and Carols respected our budget and event found additional ways for us to save money and make the project better. We had to make a small change to how we wanted to repair some damage, and Carols quickly amended our quote with no delay to the start of the work. I noticed later that some paint in a room looked off and Carlos came out the same day to repaint the room. The thing is, I was mistaken and the room was not part of the original project. Carlos laughed it off and said that it was both of our mistakes and didn't even charge us for the extra room. I've never met a contractor who was willing to build-up a relationship rather than build-up an invoice. For that reason AMC is now working on a project to get my monther's house ready for sale as I write this review. Even better, AMC's cost was competitive (no hidden fees, as was the case with several of the other quotes) and the quality of the work was excellent. We will definitely use AMC's services again in the future.

I am a senior who does some real estate investing. I bought an old house that needed almost everything done to it. I was looking for a general contractor who knew what he was doing and took obvious pride in his work. I found all the qualities I wanted and needed in Jonathan of First Cut Carpentry. He could do the majority of the work, and all his subcontractors were totally reliable and experienced. Couldn't be happier, the final product was spectacular! Highly recommend!

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
