Sergio performed a large electrical job in my kitchen including installing can lights, wiring for under cabinet lighting, a microwave and a vent hood. He also put up new sheet rock, installed a new window and fixed several holes in my ceiling. He did a great job and I would definitely hire him again. He is responsive and knowledgeable. Paula and her crew did an excellent job of making my home 'sparkle'. This was a move out, so everything was cleaned - inside cabinets, drawers, closets, windows, blinds. Excellent job. Would definitely call her again.

Very large job, which consisted of new roof, sheet rock, painting, hanging doors, replacement windows, wall demolition and cutting trim. I feel certain I may have left something out. Mr. Beard and his team did a great job and was there everyday until the project was completed. Very friendly and easy to work with. I recommend maintenance man for all your home repair needs. Thank you Maynard!

Tim and his crew have now completed 2 jobs for us at our property. The first was to finish installing vinyl shutters and do extensive plaster work on the ceiling of our garage where there was water damage. The second was to do a number of smaller projects related to dog and use damage, from replacing a window sill and baseboards, to installing new wood floor transitions, grout repair and recaulking a shower upstairs. Without exception all of this work was completed to the letter of what we had asked. It was also done in a much quicker manner and more professional manner than my wife or I could have accomplished. Tim was also very responsive with both e-mail and phone communication, and the price was also fantastic. I would highly recommend them for any project you might have as we've been very happy with them on both of our projects.

Exterior siding/trim boards replaced. John replaced rotting wood siding, corner boards, and window sills and a front post holding my roof up over my front porch. Work performed was excellent, he cleaned everything up perfectly. Weather was horrible, probably the worst weak of the year because it was so cold, he still did what he could when it wasn't raining or snowing. Weather caused delays, out of his control. I would definitely hire him again and would recommend him to anyone looking for home repair.

We were preparing our home for sale and knew we had some windows with broken seals that needed to be replaced. Hellis Family Glass was very responsive to our request to come out, was prompt with a quote and even helped bring another contractor to the table to repair some rotted wood. The only thing that could have gone better was to have had a better explanation for how long the ordering of the glass, getting it in and then scheduling the work was going to take, in advance. We were surprised when it took more than three weeks to get it done.

Alex and his team replaced our home's large bathroom window that was damaged by a storm. Alex was great at communication, gave me several options for replacement, and negotiated on cost. He followed up with status updates several times, kept his scheduled install date, and finished the install in just a few hours. I'd definitely recommend his company for home work related to windows.

It was a challenging job to fix our old window, but he did a great job and walked us through the process so we could figure out the best options. Will definitely use him again in the future for any contracting needs I have, and I highly recommend him!

I hired Universal to install a sliding door, a standard door, and a new window in my house. They unfortunately had an employee who was supposed to be working on the project call out sick at the last minute. In order to make sure that my project was done the day that they promised, the owners (Des and Mark) came as soon as they finished what they were doing, and stayed until 10:00 PM to finish the same day. They even gave me a discount for the inconvenience. The doors and window look awesome, thanks!

We recently had Lucas' company, Built Strong Renovations, at our home replacing siding, some windows and wood rot repair on remaining windows. We were extremely please with Lucas, his attention to detail and customer skills made this a pleasant experience. His guys put in some very long days to ensure the work was done and the house was always protected from weather. Thank you Lucas. Karen and Rick

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
