Mark has done video editing for about a dozen for me. After the first few-------he became very intuitive about my needs. I also took him with me for a few video shoots and hired him for family pics at a big party for wife. He does consistently good and solid work. He does what we says and is always on time.. What more to say. I'll hire him again. He's really help change the image of my business. AAA

First, a few words of background, so that this review can be put into perspective. I am an interior designer, based in France. I work with high-end clientele, and on high-end projects. I work with very high-end French and English photographers, as well. So, in the aesthetics and creative department, this reviewer has a professional basis on which to evaluate. I say this, as I want Steven to get the real credit he deserves. I was amazed with Steven's photographs. Amazed is the right word, as I was expecting "good", or even "great", but I definitely did not think I would get "amazing". Moreover, it was of an event he had never done before, and thus likely posed at least some sort of initial challenge to him (although he said nothing). It was a horse show, and I wanted candids of my horse, the grooming, the prep before going in the ring, training and interacting with the trainer, and so on. Now Steven not only rose to the occasion, but took amazingly powerful and beautiful shots. He has a way of getting "inside", of finding the images that have flair. Just as effortlessly, he finds the fun, the charming. He can do it all. He has the eye. A very, very good eye. I would say he has the talent, but talent is a misnomer, as used in most contexts. Talent is what a Mom might say a kid has, when the kid is nine years old. Most kids end up doing nothing with that God-given talent. It is wasted, never to be known. But not with Steven. He has taken his talent and honed it, perfected it. His taste (which is knowledge and practice) is of a high caliber, and this only comes from hard work. And it shows. Moreover, he is adabtable and very, very creative, always thinking. He is a total professional, and his images show that. This was obvious the moment I opened the CD of photos of the event he sent me, and looked at the first handful of photos. Hire him, and you will see the difference between the superlative, and the ordinary and undistinguished. G. Hucek, Normandy, France.

Our photo shoot went well. I am a Realtor who wanted something more than just my face and Shelli delivered. You do need to come to the shoot ready to go (hair, make-up, etc.). I was glad I could do natural shots, however, and not be all made up to look like someone I was not :)

Suzanne managed to work me and my puppies into her busy schedule before Christmas. I needed to have a picture to send to my Mom for Christmas . She took many pictures of me and my puppies and actually had some printed and left on my door step in time for me to get one to my Mom before Christmas. It all worked out perfectly. I had contacted 4 other recommended photographers before finding Suzanne on Thumbtack. None of the other photographers called me back. All of the photographers from Thumbtack actually contacted me. I appreciate the response from all of the photographers. Suzanne was pleasant to work with and did a great job. She worked so well with my puppies. I appreciate her taking the time to meet my schedule and request.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with LGi Dope Films three times and each experience has been uncanning. I got in contact with LGi Dope Films to work on one of their projects and because Gamer Gad (videographer) was so professional and inviting, I was instantly prompted to use him for my own project. What really caught my eye from our first encounter was not only the essence of his work, but the time he put in to bringing his vision to life. I am a dancer and I’ve seen videographers just set up a camera on a tripod hoping to get the shot, but Gamer will have one camera set up while he’s moving alongside you, (almost as if he’s dancing as well), this for me created a connection and made me feel as though he would do whatever it takes to get the shot. When working with him on my own project, he took initiative to be apart of the experience with me and not just wait for me to tell him what to do. He gives creative insight and helps bring the production to life in ways that I might not have envisioned, but it works. This includes location as well. His conversations were quirky, but enlightening/insightful and it’s great to have a videographer to bounce ideas off of so one doesn’t have to feel as though everything needs to be set in stone because he encourages you to push the boundaries. And the best of all...he’s always prompt!! I will continue to work with LGi Dope Films in the future!! Below are some still shots of various projects we have worked on.

Working with Karen was absolutely amazing and amazing is an understatement. She's super east to work with and I and the girls I shot with immediately created an easy bond as soon as she starting taking photos, and being comfortable with your photographer is honestly the most important thing during a photoshoot. she's very fun and I could tell she can mend very well to different personalities and have ideas for any person and isn't afraid to try new things. She's also good at suggesting and basically working the models. She can spot your good angles and if you are ever feeling lost she will definitely help you and get you back on track. And saving the best for last, the photos that turned out were some of the best I've ever had out of shooting with any photographers; the final product(s) were breathtaking and she doesn't take that long to let you see the photos at all. She even picked out some of her favorites and sent them as a sample. I can't remember the last time I had so many great photos taken!! She helped the girls and I be the best we could be and ithe experience was just breathtaking. I definitely would love to work with her individually and I am definitely going to work with her in the future.

We considered a number of different photographers for our home and we are so glad we went with Van Manen Photo. He had impressive attention to detail (lighting, time of day to get the best images with the positioning of the house) and even brought along flowers, etc, to "warm" up the home. The photos came out great -- so impressed with his talent and professionalism! Highly recommend!

Working with Marco could not have been any better! His photographic eye is impeccable! As a very amateur photographer myself, he even indulged my thoughts w/o question. He took a ton of pics for my wedding both staged & candid shots of practically everything & everyone! He provided both prints in High Res as well as all photos on a thumb drive. Can't beat the value! Thank U doesn't even begin to cover our sentiments for the memories he provided for our special day! I found Thumbtack on an Internet search on a whim.. Who knew it would work out so well!! KB

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
