David installed an owl box 15' in a tree after preparing the box with aluminum flashing to keep squirrels out, and replaced screen in the porch screen door. Service was prompt, courteous, efficient, and very thorough. These two jobs took two hours. I am preparing a list of jobs for him to return and complete. I was very pleased.

The owner came out promptly and took a look at my porch floor. I've had to have my front porch floor replaced three times in the last 16 years. I was looking for a new and creative solution and he came up with one. He gave me a fair and reasonable price. There was a bit of a problem communicating between the estimate and getting started but once his crew got going it all went smoothly. It looks beautiful and hopefully I will never have to replace it again. His crew could have cleaned up a bit better when they finished but all in all I'm very happy.

We had broken tiles on our front porch and called Confident Home Solutions. They came out promptly, offered several solutions and gave them the job to replace all our tiles. They came when promised, worked a long day in hot weather and finished the job the next morning. We were very satisfied with the quality of the work and recommend them highly. Johnathan was awesome! Right on time.....went above and beyond to repair my electrical needs, move outlets and install a new bathroom vanity light. Too boot, he’s incredibly personable...we shared a few laughs a long the way. I would definitely recommend him for any electrical needs. I’ll be hiring him again in a week or two to replace my kitchen and dining room lighting fixtures. Thank you Johnathan!!!!

Ryan did an excellent job on our porch railing. We had tried for almost a year to find someone to help us with this project with no luck. Bigger projects came up, too busy, or they just forgot about us. It was very frustrating. Upon meeting Ryan and showing him the work that needed to be done, he was able to fit us into his schedule and complete it very quickly. We would definitely recommend him.

Danny did a great job for a fair price and he started the job when he said would and finished when he said he would. Danny repaired a large crack in my driveway, replaced my walkway to the front porch and added an extra parking spot for a third car that I have. I will recommend Danny to everyone I know.

We hired Everett Kiser to restore an Oak Leaf pattern steel railing system with twisted pickets around two porches on our home. He ground off the loose paint and rust, primed everything with rust-inhibiting primer, and painted it with oil-based enamel. He did a beautiful job. Additionally he welded in a new 1"x1"x2' section of steel to replace an area that was rusted through. His attention to detail was excellent. I would hire him again.

I plan to you his service for many more projects. Not to mention that he and his crew are very nice and considerate of the homeowner and pets.

Stilworks completed an entire landscape renovation for our home. They built a beautiful stacked stone retaining wall, new stone walkway, patio and a pergola, as well as new plants. Braden was very easy to work with and always answered all of my questions. He sourced and obtained all of the plants that I requested and was very careful with all of the plants so they wouldn't get damaged. He and his crew were very friendly and easy to work with, but I was most impressed with his attention to detail and excellence at construction. I would highly recommend Stilworks for anyone looking for a landscape contractor to complete any size job, from a small planting or new lawn, to sprinklers, walls and more. Their pricing was fair and easy to understand. We are really enjoying spending time in our new yard!

Replace porch railing/banister in two days. They were on time with no delays. Both knowledgable and open to suggestions their ideas given to the finished work was an asset to the value of the home. Extra effort was given to an unforseen problem at no additional cost. Work was neat and well organized. I plan to use them for future home improvements.

I've used RJR for replacing broken ceiling fans, installing a dedicated circuit for a new pool, fixing broken bathroom faucets, and building/installing a fenced pen for my dogs. Roger always arrives on time, works fast, and does a superb job. I now have him scheduled to re-screen my screen porch, replace kitchen faucet, install a garbage disposal, replace front door, and install pet door on the back door. I'm a widow and wary of who I allow in my home, but Roger has always been honest, professional, and polite. I won't use anyone else.

David's work is the Bestin. I wouldn't consider using anyone else. He has power washed the front of my house before, installed outdoor lighting and all the fans in my house, mounted things to the walls, redid the flooring and all the painting. He even built me a porch railing. Excellent quality and very trustworthy. Totally recommend his work 100%

M & S Home Builders are fantastic. Matthew was so professional ad and reliable from Day!. His estimate and drawings were so detailed and came back to me faster than any of the other few that gave me estimates. He works hard at projects and knows how to take care of the details. He respects the yard and keeps the site neat. Can't wait until the screen porch is finished.

I needed repairs done on the wooden stairs leading from my screened porch to my patio after my dog destroyed them, as well as the doorway to the porch. Upon further inspection, Mr. Orr found pervasive wood rot underneath. Needless to say, the entire thing needed to be replaced. Mr. Orr spent 3 days working morning until night to get my project completed. He repaired the chewed up doorway at no extra labor charge. I will hire Mr. Orr again for future projects, and recommend that anybody needing anything from general repairs to large projects call Mr. Orr, and give him the opportunity to serve you!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
