Excellent service. From the beginning, Stewart was very professional. I hired him because my Mac Mini was running slow (I am a graphic designer, rely on my computer heavily). He provided an estimate via email, we scheduled a time, and he arrived to my house to fix the problem. Not only did he fix what I had asked him to - for the amount we agreed upon and in the timeframe he estimated - but he also took the time to teach me some things about maintenance and suggested the best way to improve my machine's performance. So he is knowledgeable and speaks real people talk, not techno-babble! I will recommend him to my friends and would most certainly work with him in the future.

I contacted, and commissioned, Kate to execute a modest corporate communications project. The scope of work included creative logo design, typography, and web layout. It would be no exaggeration to state, unequivocally, that Kate's consummate professionalism -- skill, creativity, talent, communication--exceeded all my expectations. I just relocated to Gastonia from California, where I had many opportunities to work with top-grade graphic designers. Kate could easily hold her own (even exceed, in some areas) with the best of them. In Kate, I've found the only graphic designer I'll need for my future projects. Thank you, Kate!

Zachary first helped me finish off my condo in Dilworth which I loved and entertained friends a lot. Then he helped me redo my master bedroom which I fell in love with when he was finished. He also helped me do the lobby and conference room at my office which my employees and clients enjoy every day. He’s a great transitional designer with exceptional work ethic. I’d recommend him to anyone.

Samantha is an absolute pleasure to work with! She is professional whilst remaining calm and relaxed and is very personable. She worked on redesigning my bedroom into the cosy, clean and modern design that I have tried, and failed to create myself. I highly recommend to all those looking for someone to bring in fresh ideas to their home.

It was a First Class experience in every way. The furnishings were extremely attractive, fit the style and colors of my home, and were displayed in a manner that really accented the home's special features. Sandy is very easy to work with and clearly knows how to design and decorate. She was very willing to work around my difficult schedule; even willing to come back a second time to complete the staging. Would highly recommend using Seasons Home Staging.

Essence Design and Interior Decorating helped me do a complete remodel of my kitchen and living room spaces. Amy was a consummate professional throughout the whole process. She presented several alternative ideas, taking into account my goals and preferences and transformed the kitchen space into a very functional work space that wows my visitors when they see it for the first time. The Living Room was transformed into a warm, welcoming space that is tasteful, functional and beautiful. She assisted in everything from color pallet selection, flooring, tile selection, granite countertop selection, plumbing fixtures, lighting, furniture, artwork, window treatments, etc. Amy made sure it all flowed together seamlessly and tastefully. Her fees were reasonable and she was always prompt whenever we had a meeting scheduled. I recommend Essence Design and Interior Decorating enthusiastically to anyone who wants to ensure their project is going to be a success.

Some would call it a disease, but even as a young child, I wanted things to "look good". Straight lines should be straight. Curved lines should be perfectly curved. This should go here. That should go there. Everything coming together just so. I reworked (in my head) how this or that sign would be better or thought about what made it work. What started for me as commercial art morphed into graphic design. My recent job focus was advertisement creation for a newspaper. I was still able to use the talents I learned from a print shop stint to provide flyers, brochures, posters, banners and business cards for the entire organization. I was able to save the company money by not having to outsource the work. I am interested in helping people use print to obtain their goals, be they personal or professional.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a web designer?

Your website is often the first thing your customers see when they’re searching for a business or service on the web. As the face of your organization, your website needs to be attractive and functional, offering the latest features that users now expect. To plan and design a site that both reflects your company’s mission and values and appeals to customers takes a professional web designer. While free online services can help people set up websites, web designers can provide a unique solution made specifically to meet customers’ personal or business needs.

Most web designers offer a wide variety of services to make your website aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Modern web design must be mobile-friendly and scalable, capable of expanding to include a blog, social media sites, and even video streaming; web designers are experts at integrating various web technologies. They can build the site, add functionality, test it, launch it on a live server, and track and maintain its performance.

In addition to web design and graphic design, some web design providers also offer development and security services, including search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing and management, logo design, site maintenance, domain registration and hosting, protection against malware, and digital marketing and content services.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

What makes a good logo design?

A good logo is an easily identifiable, memorable image that represents your brand. A good logo design aligns with your business model and expresses your company’s core values. A good logo design is simple, appealing, and easy for customers and viewers to quickly process. Some of the key components of a great logo are type, color palette and design. The scale, font and arrangement of the text you select will all make a difference in the feel and representation of your brand. A graphic designer will help you home in on the colors that best represent your identity and help you keep the color palette simple. The design of your logo includes the shapes you select and the way the color and type are arranged together. Investing in the services of a professional to create your logo design is likely a smart investment for any size business. Nationally, the average price range for a logo designer ranges from $170 to $250.

How much do web designers charge?

The average cost for hiring a web designer varies greatly depending on the scope of the work, which may range from building a site from scratch to rebranding an existing one, as well as the amount of content and graphics the designer will create. In general, the more complex the project, the more time the design agency will have to spend. Because web designers often work on an hourly basis, the longer the project, the higher the costs; you can count on the web designer spending at minimum 10 hours to create a very basic website with just a handful of pages with few elements. Prices also depend on the designer’s skill set, the process, and the company’s rates. In general, the national average cost for a basic website package starts at $500, but a customized website can cost as much as $2,000 or more. Here are typical average hourly rates, broken out by the complexity of the work:

  • Basic layout and user interface: $15-$40 per hour
  • Content management system design: $20-$50 per hour
  • Custom website design with custom code: $45-$75 per hour
