We are building a large sunroom, using 200 year old wood, lots of windows, wood for the ceilings and floors. Steve contacted me through Thumbtack as soon as our job was listed. He came out the next day, talked with me and my husband, got a contract to us the next day and started work right away. He ha,s been here almost everyday, even on weekends. He takes pride in his work and has a reliable team. Our first contractor started the job, last July, and took off with our money (Ray Tony Hubbard). Is it so nice to finally find someone who is honest and trustworthy. He is easy to work with and I would highly recommend this company.

Paul and his crew did an excellent job. We called Paul's company after our new house flooded due to a faulty washer. Paul replaced carpet, linoleum and wood laminate floors for us, as well as installing new tile in our kitchen. He also repaired our ceiling and dry wall and found preexisting damage to the subfloor we were able to take care of it. He was very professional and easy to get in contact with, I would definitely recommend him for future jobs.

We had a basement floor tiled with a border. T and R tile and home renovation provided a reasonable rate and completed the work in a timely manner. They were polite and professional. I would recommend them and use them again.

I had Uprite Construction come to my house to replace flooring in my laundry room and to cut a notch out of my kitchen cabinet for my refrigerator. I was contacted by Farren Stanley and he came out and gave me a very fair estimate which he stuck to. I scheduled him to come out the next week and he completed everything in a day. What impressed me the most is that he left my house very clean which I appreciated. The quality of his service was amazing. I am very happy with the end product. I will definitely be contacting Uprite Construction to do projects for me in the future.

I hired Palone Construction in February 2016 to do some custom bookshelves in my home office, wainscoting, install several recessed lights, and to do a custom wood framed accent wall. I have always been very hesitant with contractors because I have had some pretty bad experiences with contractors not showing up on time, not completing the project according to schedule, and overall just not doing a good job. From the first moment that Raymond and Anthony arrived, I could tell that the two knew what they were doing. They arrived every morning by 7:45 AM never took a lunch break and left at 6:30 PM. I have never witnessed such craftsmanship in my life, every cut was precise, and the quality of their work was beyond phenomenal, in addition to the two just being great guys and easy to talk to. I intend to hire Palone Construction again to do a coffered ceiling in my living room. I would HIGHLY recommend this company for any project. Outstanding work!! Thank you guys for making our Houzz pictures a reality!

Rebuilt the porch on our 1930s bungalow after a tree fell and destroyed it. The work is of the highest quality, sturdy and long lasting as well as beautiful. Would definitely call him up to help us with other house projects. He looked for ways to save us money and had excellent recommendations on how to make the house look great.

Mr. Ray Pridgen of Rayco Home Improvements was contracted to do home improvements to my old farm house. This was after I contracted with another firm. The first firm did more damage than any improvements. And, they stole my money. Mr. Pridgen gave me an honest estimate to do the task. He and his small crew did a beautiful job and in less time than he estimated. And, the entire cost was a few hundred dollars less than was estimated. He successfully covered up the bad attempt by the first contractor. I am pleased to recommend Ray Pridgen and Rayco Home Improvements to anyone looking for an honest and professional contractor to do any home improvements.

Kelly did a great job building a closet for us. He was a little slow and sometimes late for the job, but it was worth it because his estimate was much lower than other estimates. He was also very determined to make sure the job was done to our satisfaction and would go to any length to make sure we were happy. In the end, even though the project took longer than expected, we had a closet that met all expectations and saved us a lot of money. We would use Kelly again for a small job.

My husband and I hired Muse to remodel our entire home. They re-did the whole interior: bathroom, kitchen, refinished the hardwood floors, picked new fixtures, got rid of the popcorn ceilings, added a closet and more. I was impressed with the speed, quality, beautiful design and professionalism they brought to the experience. I was dreading the remodel but working with Muse made it easy and enjoyable. Plus, the finished product is more beautiful and functional than I ever even imagined it could be!

We obtained 3 bids for building an addition to our home that consisted of a bedroom and master bath. Deaton Builder's was the only contractor to give us a complete detailed estimate. David was very thorough and included everything. We hired them, and was very satisfied with their workmanship and friendly service. I would highly recommend using Deaton Builder's. Quality service and attention to detail made us happy.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
