Great and honest help is hard to come by so when we found James, we were able to breathe a big sigh of relief. It was like hitting the jackpot. Since May, we had trouble finding someone who would be able to help us fix our water damaged wall from broken caulking around our large 6' window. James was extremely responsive, respectful, and flexible with our working hours, and was meticulous about doing his best work as quickly and efficiently as he could. He always made sure we were aware of his process and let us know about any changes from our original priced quote. This is an important detail because when he went into our wall, we learned that the rot was an even bigger problem that we had all initially thought. James adjusted plans accordingly, all while maintaining complete transparency over things like the materials he was going to use, how long it would take him to complete the job, and how much it was going to cost us to have him do it. You would be hard pressed to find his kind of honesty these days. In the future, James will be the first person I call for any of our home repairs and has my highest recommendation.

We are building a large sunroom, using 200 year old wood, lots of windows, wood for the ceilings and floors. Steve contacted me through Thumbtack as soon as our job was listed. He came out the next day, talked with me and my husband, got a contract to us the next day and started work right away. He ha,s been here almost everyday, even on weekends. He takes pride in his work and has a reliable team. Our first contractor started the job, last July, and took off with our money (Ray Tony Hubbard). Is it so nice to finally find someone who is honest and trustworthy. He is easy to work with and I would highly recommend this company.

Justin did a fabulous job installing two windows for us. At the beginning of the process, he was very clear in what he was going to do and what he needed to do it. He finished the work quickly and efficiently. He was happy to work on our timeline and I did not feel that he was pushing us to do anything we couldn't afford. Very friendly and affordable pricing. We will have Justin back next year to install a few more windows and to help with other projects.

Jim and his crew did a major renovation on our home. They moved walls, replaced concrete patios, replaced all windows and 2 sliding doors, installed a French door, installed all new wood flooring, painted the inside and outside of the house, replaced a patio cover, and renovated 2 bathrooms (including a new tub in one and new tiled shower enclosure in the other). The work was well done, was completed in the time that was agreed upon and any issues (all minor and very few) were dealt with quickly and completely. Jim is very easy to work with and his grasp of what we were looking for and ability to get there is awesome. JWB is the first contractor we will call for any other work we need done.

We first met JC and Robinson Construction when they performed major repairs after a tree limb crashed through our roof. They did an excellent job with the roof repair including replacing 8 sheets of plywood, interior drywall ceiling and wall replacement, and additional repairs to a rotted sun room roof and exterior over sized sun room window and supporting structure. Robinson Construction also replaced two sun room sunlights. All work was top notch and completed on time. JC's star performer is his lead carpenter Freddie who is clearly an outstanding craftsman and the key to JC and Robinson's success. We were so impressed with this experience that we then paid a reasonable premium to have JC and crew repaint the home and effect other needed repairs, and install two new doors. The end product was equally impressive but the work dragged on for well over a month, partly due to weather but also due to other job conflicts. The length of time it took became aggravating and detracted from an otherwise positive outcome. Still I would highly recommend JC and Robinson Construction, just make sure you have a strong understanding regarding the timeline for completion.

Quinn Enterprises helped us out in a jam, was quick and did excellent work. He fixed some siding work that had been done incorrectly by another contractor, fixed some fascia board and and window for us. He was able to provide us with a low and high estimate of his work prior to starting and came in a lot closer to the low price. A lot of contractors give you a starting price for their work and the figure usually goes up from there but not Quinn Enterprises. He was wonderful to work with. I would highly recommend Quinn Enterprises for any of your home needs!

I had Jonathan and his partner clean aluminum siding and window sashes all around the house. They were excellent. They showed up on time, brought their cleaning supplies, did a superb job cleaning and removed their mess. I will definitely use Jonathan again.

Gary really helped me out of a jam. My laptop just stopped working. I called him to see if he could help me out. He was very understanding that I didn't really know that much about computers and somehow I had erased my Windows from my computer. Everything was just gone. Not only was he able to get the system up and running but all of my files, pictures everything was back. He was so courteous and professional. I had taken my computer to other people before and they took forever to get it back. I had my computer back in just a couple of days. I have recommended him to friends and co workers. Also I was having furniture delivered the day he brought the computer back and he assisted the guys with taking out my old stuff. I will definitely be calling him again.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

      • Trim repair:
        • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
        • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
      • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
      • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
        • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
        • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
          • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
