We called Joel to work with our new rescue dog and our current dog who had some obedience training. Joel had responded to our inquiry within an hour and was over to do the evaluation the next day. We loved that Joel came to our home to complete the sessions as well as provided us with resources to help with training. His pricing was very reasonable compared to other dog trainers in the area.

Lena came to our house to help us with training our puppy. She was here for over 2 hours and she gave us a lot of very useful information. She was extremely patient with both of our children and our puppy. The information that she gave us was extremely relevant to what we wanted to know and when she left, we definitely felt like we had all the tools we needed to train our dog. She was very nice, prompt and I would recommend her services to anyone looking for a private dog trainer. I've actually already given her name to two of my friends who need help with their dogs.

I don’t know where to begin... I contacted Kevin’s K-9 Accademy to help me with a rescue boxer I saved off of Craig’s list. I talked with Kevin at great length about Bentley’s background and his severe fear based aggression. He asked me questions about what my goals and expectations were with training. Finally Kevin’s schedule permitted him to meet Bentley in person. He came to my home and talked with me and at the same time studied Bentley. Kevin knew from the moment he met Benny that he was a challenge, but he also knew he could handle it. For the first time since Benny came to me I felt optimistic, I felt hope that soon he would be an active furry family member. The day of training came. Kevin came mentally and physically prepared. We talked over the game plan and then went in the backyard to begin. Bentley was explosive. Kevin had anticipated that. But within less than 10 minutes, Kevin had Bentley walking at a medium pace next to him doing laps in my yard. I was in total AMAZEMENT. Now Bentley is the same dog that for the last 4 months would not let anyone except me within 6 feet of him without him lunging. WOW! Kevin is a highly qualified dog trainer. He wears his love and passion for animals on his sleeve. I can’t say enough good things about Kevin’s K-9 Accademy and the compassion the showed to Bentley and me. On a scale from 1-10 I give 💯!

I have worked with Holland K9 services for 3.5 years and I would whole heartedly recommend him to anyone. When we adopted our dog Buddy, he was so high energy that we had to let him run off leash to burn that energy off and be a happy dog. However he was completely unresponsive to commands off leash, and would charge (friendly and excited, but still) any dog or person he spotted. After a bad experience with another dog training group, we found John. He helped us to transition to using an E-collar (shock collar) in order to enforce off-leash commands. I was initially nervous about that type of training due to our prior experience but with John it went great. Buddy was never fearful like he was with the other trainers. Our dog became wonderful and basically 100% reliable off-leash, and all of us were so much happier. We hired him again when we got our second dog, and he helped us train her as well as brush up Buddy on his skills again. Training with him is definitely worth every cent.

I was very impressed with the training my dog received. Kacey was the most difficult dog I have ever owned. We could not have anyone over to our home or take her out in public. After her training, she Is a different dog. She listens and we can now take her out anywhere. I can’t say enough good things about this company!! Definitely would recommend to anyone!!!

Honestly it has been amazing. I told Mariah the problems I was having with my dog Grace. Not only did she set a clear path forward for what we needed to work on to correct it, but also identified things I needed but didn’t ask for. I’m a soon to be Veteran being medically retired and she’s helping me to train Grace to be my service dog. I had a lot of quotes from bigger trainers, but Mariah was the ONLY one that even addressed my dog by name and the issues I wrote about. So I guess I’ll say this, if you want someone knowledgeable, actually cares enough to read what you write and generally a pretty amazing person. You’ve come to the right place.

Hiring Jarod was one of the best things I ever did . I was very weary about choosing a dog trainer for our 1st puppy because he was my baby . Jarod put all my doubts at ease . after training our little ankle biter was no longer biting , he had no accidents in the house and he was much more obedient ! The best thing jarod did for us was train our puppy to behave around our baby when he was born . one of a mother's worst fears is having their pet and new baby not get along , jarod helped put our worries behind us . when we hired jarod he told us he sticks with you for the life of the dog . he sticks to his word, he helps us any way he can with our fur baby! I wouldn't trust my dog with anyone else

About 7 years ago, we hired Fran to train our Chow puppy, who was out of control. I saw an article she had written in a magazine and was intrigued by her writings. In 2 weeks he was learning all the commands she taught US! I learned so much from her on dog behavior I suggested she have her own TV show, because she truly is better than Ceaser Milan and Victoria Stillwell. Fran doesn't use harsh training methods, she trains by the "reward method", and she LOVES her clients, she is professional, fun, and has more knowledge about training than anyone I have ever worked with! I recently rescued another Chow (named CUJO) that was his name from his previous owners and he is about 8 years old from the shelter I volunteer at and he was apparently abused and conditioned to a home with fighting, and Fran has worked with him and me to desensitize him to banging, knocking, any noise that would signify he was in an abusive environment. He also had a very negative reaction to people touching each , hugging, I had to be very careful when I got him home. He was undernourished and sick.....but now he's coming along wonderfully. HE LOVES HER and so do I. She helped me with a new diet for him for the health issues he was having. She is knowledgeable in every aspect of dog training, agression, agility, puppies, Good Canine Citizens, companion dogs and I recommend her highly. She goes out of her way to do her very best for you and your dog. She just isn't your typical "dog trainer" she absolutely loves what she does and puts 200% into her work ! I highly recommend Fran. !

Nick took on the responsibility of board and training a dog that no one would touch. My dog is very big and aggressive to people and other animals. Nick was able to get him under control with his training and he is doing much better. Nick is by far one the best trainer I have worked with and I have worked with many over the past two years. Highly recommended!

If you're looking for a dog trainer, THIS IS YOUR GUY! His puppy boot camp literally worked miracles with our sassy, biting, crazy 12 we old puppy! Henry is super communicative and helpful (before, during & after training) which makes the entire process much easier! He is smart, very professional, incredibly likeable and extremely good at what he does. I also really appreciated his reward based training system. We could tell how much he loves and respects dogs by how he immediately interacted with Bailey... he was nice, but in charge. All I can say is, he left with a crazy 'cujo' puppy lol and returned with a lovable, obedient muffin! We can't thank him enough!

Blair is the best dog trainer! I'm so sad she's not in MN anymore. I loved taking group classes and private lessons from her. She gave me more confidence and helped me communicate better with my dog Ruby. Ruby was reactive to dogs and people, growling, barking, and lunging at them. We now enjoy peaceful walks. Ruby can let other dogs walk past her and she walks perfectly in heel. With Blair's guidance, I feel I can tackle any situation. She always answered my questions and had advice for the different difficulties I was having with Ruby's behavior. Blair is funny and very personable. She works great with the dog and owner. I highly recommend Heart Dog Behavior Training!!! We love you Blair!

We had a great overall experience with Glenn as he trained our dog and us. :) Glenn was patient, well-informed and friendly. He answered all of our follow-up questions throroughly and made sure we felt comfortable throughout the training process. The one caveat I would suggest is to establish a communication plan upfront with him. Once we addressed that email was his preferred channel, things went more smoothly. We would recommend Glenn and his family to anyone looking for an educated dog trainer!

We had a great experience. It was very apparent our 6 month-old little beagle did too. He came home so happy. He had learned many things needed to become a good family pet. Now, if we, the humans, can follow our instructions to keep reinforcing the learning. You know, it's hard to teach an old dog (human) new tricks. Heather was great with Shylo and we would recommend her to anyone looking for super dog training.

My dog was banned from PetSmart grooming after trying numerous groomers and dog trainer, Will Carmack was the only dog groomer and trainer that she would allow to cut her hair. Will provides a loving environment and has an uncanny ability to cut her hair while keeping her calm the entire time!!!

Kat was able to help me after I adopted my 5 year old, Rufus. He was a rescue dog that didn't have the greatest go at life for the first 5 years. Sweet, loving boy, but he definitely needed some guidance as far as training and obedience went. She came over to our house- met with us- and put together a plan to help get him on the fast track to where he needed to be. Through very thorough one on one training she was able to get him to *not* jump with excitement on to visitors (and even me) when they came through the door, she trained him to always stay in "place" when commanded, and the biggest thing of all was that she was able to train him to walk on a leash. I know that sounds silly, but before she worked with him- he was all over the place on a leash. With her tools and methods, he now walks by my side as if the leash isn't even there. Even more so, I can now walk him (where it's permitted) OFF of the leash and he obeys every command. He's still the same sweet boy I adopted, but he wouldn't be the well trained boy he is today without the work and training she did with him.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
