We are very pleased with our choice of Frank to do the job of putting together and installing our IKEA kitchen. Anyone who has put together IKEA furniture before knows it's quite a task! He is a family-owned business and works wonderfully with his son and wife. It was a pleasure getting to know them, all while watching our kitchen come together! Frank is thorough and precise about his decisions, always making sure we were happy. He saved us a good chunk of money, costing significantly less than the cost of the IKEA installers, while still doing a professional job. Best of all, we created a friendship with him and his family. They were so sweet to our 5 & 2 year old sons and were beyond trustworthy. Sometimes when you hire someone to do work in your home that requires a few days to accomplish, you can't wait to just have it done and have 'strangers' out of your house. I can honestly say that it was hard to say goodbye to him and his family when the job was done. Thank you Frank! We would do it all over again if we had to. We will add photos of the finished kitchen when our backsplash is done later this week!

Jenny was the interior decorator for Leola & Simone Boutique in Fort Mill, SC. She handled everything from top to bottom, including ordering items, handeling placement, picking finishes and plans. This was her first time desiging a store, and everyone was OVERWHELMED by her keen eye and sassy style that fit our upscale boutique. She had unexpected back surgery during our project and still managed to "hobble" to the design site for final placement suggestions. She is personable, goes above and beyond, affordable and a great option for any project!

John was on time, very professional and knew his stuff. He came to my home to do some remodeling in the kitchen and I was very happy with the quality of work and the price. I have already scheduled a date to use his services again on another project.

I had this company do a roof and Windows for me not to long ago. They showed up when they said they would. A price that was not only impressive but nobady else could beat. They were incredibly polite and patient with me while walking me through the process. They were efficient and fast at what they did. I will definitely be using them again for my home repairs.

I contacted Zach to help update my living room. I was so pleased with the results that I ended up having him design my entire downstairs living area! Zach was incredibly easy to work with. He had great ideas, and paid attention to my personal style and budget. Zach masterfully managed every step of the design process from creating the initial vision to the final install. If you're looking for an interior decorator, I HIGHLY recommend using Zach.

Swoon! Is there anything better than coming home to a clean house? Everything cleaned and scrubbed, tidied and put back into place, house left locked up, nice little touches that I love. (I'm sorry, the triangle fold on the toilet paper and paper towels makes me happy!) Their vacuum is obviously a hundred times better than mine because the carpet is literally visibly cleaner. Cindy and Jason were lovely to meet, easy and flexible to work with, and did a great job. Thank you!

I hired Jimmie for a paint palette consultation. She was a tremendous help in working with me to choose a color palette that will flow throughout the house. She eased my anxiety and helped me choose colors that I believe will create a warm and welcoming environment in my home. Once the painting project is complete, I will post photos. In the meantime, I've hired her to help me with some interior design work. I will post another review when we complete that project.

Marco was excellent and paid great attention to detail! Our house looks great from the pressure washing and gutter cleaning! Marco made an extra effort and even came back to our home and removed areas that did not come clean from the pressure washing. Would definitely recommend! EXCELLENT! A++++

Wendy has an eye for detail and a sixth sense for design. What I loved about working with her the most was her ability incorporate what we had while introducing fresh new pieces that made the room come alive and tell a story. She is not a "decorator"- she is an artist and your space is her palate. -Susie

Julian was hired to clear out land of trees and shrubs and just growth. He came out and gave us a quote. He beat everyone by a mile. I was a little sceptical as he was a newer business but we decided to give him a shot. Great decision. He has been working his heart out. We had 10+ larger trees that needed to be taken down and he did it with ease. He has worked so hard and really gone above and beyond. He cleared out the land and graded it so we can lay our foundation and begin our new home. We are so grateful for him. We even have him a little extra since he was so well priced and we still saved! Can't beat that.

Sandy was great. The truck with the furnishings was late and her and her team worked late into the night to meet the agreed upon schedule and did an amazing job. She's definitely got an eye for decorating and staging.... Highly recommended

My husband and I recently purchased a home with an unfinished basement and were looking to complete the project. We needed plans drawn up in order to secure permits for the project. DL was fantastic to work with. He coordinated with the person running the project and always kept us in the loop of progress. His responsiveness and work quality is superb. His overall knowledge of the renovation process was an added bonus. I knew after meeting him that we were going to get the exact results we were looking for. I highly recommend working with DL.

I’ve had the pleasure of hiring D’Nicole Decor twice to decorate areas in my home. Denean is so versatile and professional. She transformed my dining room into a beautiful and elegant space I now feel proud to entertain guest in and have Sunday dinners. A few months later she transformed my daughters playroom from a toddlers room to a tween playroom they never want to leave from!! Denean is so knowledgeable and provided me with quality, beautiful decor at prices I could afford!! I can’t wait to bring her back to decorate my bedroom and living room. She has a forever client in me for sure!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
