Joel worked 6 sessions with our 20 week old Lab. Our puppy was energic and basically out of control. Joel's calm demeanor and confident/kind/contolled instructional sessions were just what our dog needed. During the second week we saw marked improvement in compliance and control. Joel also was available for advice and knowledgeable about little things to help improve our control and dog management. I would highly recommend Joel for your dog training and please feel free to connect with me for further info. 704 724 0234 Thanks. John Wyllie

We were so very pleased w Kevin’s work with our puppy. Can’t say enough good things. We did the 10 day plan for general obedience training for the puppy. The change in his behavior is amazing (and he was already a good puppy). Kevin picked him up and brought him home daily. Worked with him at our house, his house, and in public. Focused on areas we wanted but included other important issues we didn’t think of. He sent us multiple videos of training daily with explanations. We loved these and they taught us a lot. He also met with us with the dog to instruct us. Always wanted to make sure we understood what to do and why. We feel both the dog and us have a great foundation now to continue training. Would highly recommend.

John is not only a trainer, but a valuable resource- makes himself available to do what it takes. We acquired our 3 yo GS from a kennel so he needed to be household/ young family trained- jumping up, command/response, dog aggression. John communicated our dog’s progress throughout his training and provided the training our dog needed. John also provides the opportunity for follow up and refresh to reinforce the initial training. This is key for my household as all our humans need to be in the same page, using the same vocabulary, as our GS was trained. Very pleased!

Mariah did an awesome job with our 2 year old Husky Leonidas. We could barely walk him before hiring her and now he is perfect on a leash. He is perfect walking buddy now! We would definitely recommend her for all of your puppy and even older dogs training needs!

I met Nick, the owner of Alpha-Moves while taking my dog Mister, to a dog socialization class. I was immediately impressed by Nick’s easy going demeanor & willingness to spend extra time with me talking about the ins & outs of training a puppy. I was so impressed by Nicks knowledge of dogs & his suggestions on how to train my puppy, I asked Nick if he would be willing to come over to my house & help me further train Mister. I had no idea how how much help he would be. Nick showed me how to potty train Mister, how to get him not to chew on everything in the house, how to actually come when I called him , and he even showed me effective ways to discipline him without breaking his spirit. Nick was always on time for our appointments & willing to answer my calls & walk me thru whatever Mister & I were working on. When Mister turned 6 months I entrusted Nick to take Mister for 3 weeks & do an intensive obedient training with him. I must admit this was the longest 3 weeks of my life but nick kept my up to date with the training & sent videos to show Mister’s continued improvement. My wife & I had just had our first child so I kept reiterating to Nick how good Mister has to be. After the 3 weeks were up I was blown away with what Nick had done with Mister. My wife or I can simply say “place” & Mister goes to our pre designated spot & stays for as long as we need him. This is so helpful when we are trying to cook dinner & bathe our daughter. Before Mister was underneath our feet & clamoring for attention but now he will just chill out in his place until we say the code word & then he will come off. It’s a game changer!!! Mister heals, off leash. With the help of an e collar I go to the park without a leash. I can ask Mister to lay down, then walk a 100 yards and give him a hand signal that Nick taught him & he will run right to me & sit. It is truly amazing. Mister just turned 1 years old & we haven’t had to deal with all the usual “puppy stuff”. Nick even taught him the “that’s enough” command where I can ask Mister to stop barking & he will do it. This one blew me away because we want Mister to bark to let people know he’s here, but we also want to be able to ask him to stop. Now I feel we have the best of both worlds. I have never left a review for anyone in my entire life but after working with Nick I wanted to let others know. We couldn’t be more grateful & I couldn’t give Nick a higher recommendation. Thanks for all the help Nick. I wish you continued success. Look forward to more training the future. And Mister does too:)

After the passing of our Black lab, last year it was so hard for us to get another dog but we knew we were ready. We seeked out Aaron and he found us the most beautiful chocolate lab puppy!! The kept him for the first few weeks and started him potty training and some basic commands and then they delivered him to us all the way to Virginia from Charlotte!! This company obviously really loves animals and has their best interest at heart. Thank you so much for our good boy!!! He will be continuing his puppy education here soon and we are looking forward to working with them again!

If you're looking for a dog trainer, THIS IS YOUR GUY! His puppy boot camp literally worked miracles with our sassy, biting, crazy 12 we old puppy! Henry is super communicative and helpful (before, during & after training) which makes the entire process much easier! He is smart, very professional, incredibly likeable and extremely good at what he does. I also really appreciated his reward based training system. We could tell how much he loves and respects dogs by how he immediately interacted with Bailey... he was nice, but in charge. All I can say is, he left with a crazy 'cujo' puppy lol and returned with a lovable, obedient muffin! We can't thank him enough!

Blair has been an amazing resource in helping me work through issues with my shy dog who also displays some dog aggressive behaviors. She is clear and concise when answering questions and does a fantastic job at getting to the underlying issues of behaviors. It is clear she loves her job and cares about dogs. She is also great at working with people and helping them learn how to create lasting change in their dogs. I would highly recommend Blair for any help with anything dog training needs!

Amy is absolutely one of the nicest people I have ever met. We stayed in Charlotte Friday, Saturday and Sunday and had her set up to watch our puppy on Sunday during the day. He did not take well to being in a hotel room and Amy offered to watch our dog the entire weekend and for a very reasonable price. We ended up only doing Sunday and knew our dog was going to be safe and taken care of the moment we pulled up. She has a beautiful, well kept house in a gorgeous neighborhood. I cannot recommend Sky's the Limit enough and we will definitely continue to take our dog to her anytime we are in the Charlotte area.

We had a great overall experience with Glenn as he trained our dog and us. :) Glenn was patient, well-informed and friendly. He answered all of our follow-up questions throroughly and made sure we felt comfortable throughout the training process. The one caveat I would suggest is to establish a communication plan upfront with him. Once we addressed that email was his preferred channel, things went more smoothly. We would recommend Glenn and his family to anyone looking for an educated dog trainer!

We had a great experience. It was very apparent our 6 month-old little beagle did too. He came home so happy. He had learned many things needed to become a good family pet. Now, if we, the humans, can follow our instructions to keep reinforcing the learning. You know, it's hard to teach an old dog (human) new tricks. Heather was great with Shylo and we would recommend her to anyone looking for super dog training.

Liz (and Meritt) did an awesome job of training Spartacus - our cockapoo - and us! What they do at CCT is everything a dog owner would want - they truly love what they do and it shows in how they help dogs be such great family members and how Spartacus loves going there for socializing and training with other dogs. I could not imagine having a dog without them.

Fran is a wonderful and talented dog trainer! She comes to you and works on whatever your needs are. She has a great personality. My dog loves her (and so do my cats). We love her gentle and fun approach with our golden. She gives the whole family the skills we need to continue the work after she leaves. She is always available if we need help in between sessions too. Her group classes are great too! I recommend her to everyoe.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
