GREAT VALUE

"Debby is such a wonderful massage therapist. Initially I scheduled a massage as simply a treat for myself, a relaxing re-boot. I soon realized Debby's knowledge, experience, and insight combines to offer so much more- pain relief, improved mobility, recovery, true healing. One of her strengths is her expertise in many different types of massage and her ability to expertly and intuitively personalize the session(s) for specific needs. She introduced me to Thai massage, something I would never had tried before, and I absolutely love it! I cannot wait to return for another session!"

"Betsy is truly very gifted. She listened to what my issues were (pinched nerves/muscle spasms in my upper back and numbness going down my arm) and she catered my massage toward working on those areas very effectively. Since it was my first massage, I got an awesome discount. You can tell that Betsy uses her gift of touch with focused intention rather than simply giving you the same massage she gives everyone else. I could tell that she cared enough to focus throughout the entire massage and wanted to truly help me, not just get it over with like I've experienced before from other massage therapists. I have my next massage booked with her already. Betsy is a delightful person and I would highly recommend her to anyone!"

"I really enjoy massages BUT finding the right person can be challenging. I've had plenty of massages and most either hurt during the process or left me feeling sore afterwards. Then I met Charles. He is very talented. He is very calm which creates a relaxing atmosphere. What I like the most about him is that he is extremely attentive to reading my body and determining what needs to be done. He removes all my my knots and I have never been sore afterwards. He covers the entire body within the time I choose (either 60 or 90 minutes) and I never feel rushed. He paces himself quite well. Also, he does not try to talk through the massage except to ask me if the pressure he is applying is ok. I always look forward to my next massage with him. Thank you so much."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
