Quick, honest, good work! We just bought a home and the previous owner did not mow the lawn prior to the sale. We needed a quick cut.

We are so impressed with the job Larry did on our yard. We have a very large yard and it was in quite a state from our previous landscapers failing to show up. The communication has been wonderful and we now have comfort knowing we have hired a company that is reliable and will do a fabulous job. We highly recommend. Thank you!

No matter what landscaping job I hire Jerell to do, he always does a first-rate job! Tree- trimming, lawn mowing, mulching, he does it all. My back yard was in awful shape and by the time he was finished, it was among the best looking in my neighhood! Dependable, professional, a background in horticulture, and reasonable prices as well, I unequivocally recommend Jerell (919-349-2457) for all lawncare and landscaping needs.

Renovated entire front and back yards - Replaced overgrown shrubbery, removed trees, removed old carport, installed mulch & grass, re-purposed patio pavers, etc. I recieved visits/quotes from several landscapers before choosing this company. Stone, Soils, & Shurbs is cost competitive, responsive, trustworthy, and pleasant to work with. I enjoyed working with Jason and would both recommend and use his services again.

Season to Season Landscaping was prompt and professional. Dallas and his team completed the work quickly and cleaned up after the job was complete. As this was my first time using any landscaping company, I cannot compare prices, but his quote seemed reasonable.

Adrian and his crew did a GREAT job on my lawn! He and his crew very professional. Even in the scorching 98 degree heat, they got the job done and did well! The price was excellent, too! I will definitely hire him again for landscaping needs!

Having used Lawn Guy Landscaping services for the first time, I found the experience with Michael of Lawn Guy Landscaping truly refreshing because of the overall quality of the results. During the fairly recent past, I've used a few lawn services with results ranging from very satisfactory to disappointing. I found Michael's care in performing the work during his initial visit was faultless. The experience with regard to communication (e.g., being informed re arrival time, how work would be done and the equipment used as well as what work was to be done within a given period of time), was much better than other services I've used and I consider that the price for the quality services I received was a fair one.

FortSmith Lawn & Landscape did an excellent job at a property my husband and I were leasing. Upon the end of our lease, and as part of our move-out duties, the lawn needed: a mow, trim, weed-eat, edging, leaves removal (a lot!), trimmed shrubs and an all-around clean-up look. My husband and I were very pleased with the professional results and hope to hire FortSmith Lawn & Landscape for future services. Thank you FortSmith Landscaping!

Mr. Mitchell was great. I originally asked for just lawn mowing and trim. I asked if he could replace my mailbox in addition I was quoted a fair price and both jobs were completed the next day. My yard looks great and the mailbox is now new! I will definitely call Mr. Mitchell again when I have another project. Great handyman services.

Josh was very professional. He arrived on time and worked quickly to make my yard beautiful again after a storm blew through. We've used other landscapers in the past who didn't meet my expectations. Josh wasnt like others, he did such a good job,we rehired him to lay our pinestraw in the spring. He's definately knowledgable and cares about his customers. We will use his services again!

V&H Landscaping provided us with exceptional service and workmanship. Valeriano, along with two of his employees, re-did two brick walkways at our home--one in the front yard and one in the back yard. V&H also dug out an area for our stream and pond water feature. They carefully replanted five large blueberry bushes, and one month later, the bushes are thriving. I would hire V&H Landscaping again, and I recommend their services to you without reservation. Both of my parents are licensed general contractors, and they were very impressed with the work that Valeriano completed for us. Thank you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
