Jim Amara is a true carpenter. Jim arrived on time, did the work I needed doing, which in my case was replacing some rotted deck boards, replace a hard weather beaten 2x4 on the top of my gate on deck and sure it up or re-align it so it opens/closes smoothly then sure up a 4 foot section of lattice and trim board underneath my screened in porch. Next is to get the deck stained, which Jim said his son would do in a few days (weather permitting) for an agreeable reasonable price that I won't disclose and that his son is in the process of opening up his own painting business. Jim took the extra time and paid attention to detail of adding wood filler where needed due to a 9 year old weathered deck in need of help. Jim provided all materials, brought his own tools and hauled off the removed rotted boards without me asking him too. Jim is very knowledgeable, professional & personable. I know exactly who to call the next time I need any type of carpentry work done, Jim Amara! (Did I mention he's fast...?) You'll feel the same as I once you give Jim's Carpentry a try. You won't have to tell your friends about Jim because they'll be asking you "who did this beautiful carpentry work"? You'll be proud to refer Jim to family & friends in knowing that they too will soon be as happy as you!

Roberto is amazing. He and Amy are perfectionists, and they went the extra mile to see that everything was done correctly and not cheaply. The quality of his work should make our plumbing and carpentry repairs and painting last a very long time. Definitely worth hiring, and we would recommend him to everyone.

My father-in-law was a well-respected general contractor for the past 50 years, with specialties in masonry, stone work and carpentry. With my husband growing up in the business, he can immediately tell the difference between good and bad contractors. Ron is a very thorough, honest, and true craftsman who did a phenomenal job in remodeling the 1st and 2nd floor of my workshop. There aren’t too many contractors like him these days. Not only did our project surpass our expectations, he stayed on budget and on time. I would highly recommend Ron for you home remodeling needs.

Mark was great to work with. He was very prompt and offered a lot of solutions for our project. We originally hired him for a tiling job which turned into carpentry and and plumbing. We even had him back a few weeks later for painting. We really enjoyed him and would certainly use him again.

Bottom line, Phil knows carpentry. We had a tough situation here at the Town of Morrisville where some contractor built soffits out of a cheap material that appeared to be drywall and it all started falling apart. Not only did Phil give me the best price to replace the soffits with vinyl but he did an excellent job and did it rather quickly. I would highly recommend this company. For me, Craftsman Unlimited Carpentry is on the top of my list for carpentry contractors. If you are in the Morrisville area, stop by and see the magic he did on our bathroom soffits at the Morrisville Community Park bathrooms at the end of the entrance road. For carpentry, Phil is the man!

We hired Raleigh Property Services to repair/replace a tree damaged dock on our property. The dock was almost completely destroyed from a fallen tree.. Mike did a fantastic job on this tough project. He found the best price on materials and passed the savings on to us. The kept us updated on progress throughout the project with pictures and phone calls. Mike and his crew did a very clean and very professional piece of carpentry work in a rather difficult environment. I am very happy with the results and will hire Mike again in the future. Thanks again Mike

Outstanding customer experience with Scott @ Millwork Solutions. He rebuilt our deck using timbertech and did gorgeous work. Very competitive on price but quality of work was our first concern and he did a fantastic job. Would definitely recommend his work and he's the first builder i'll call when we have additional carpentry work for the house. Great experience!

When the home improvement store just doesn't cut it, call on Erin. I started building a vertical herb garden, a very simple project, for a friend's wedding, and it was coming down to the wire when I realized I was missing a tool: a $100 drill press for the hole saw I bought. Desperately I looked online but buying an expensive tool I'll probably never use again was no solution, and anyone willing to lend it gave quotes through the nose. Lowes didn't have one in store. Erin came by the day after I posted here, cut the holes in the wood I needed, and saved me hours of work with his power sander! He was great to work with, friendly and responsive, and I would definitely hire him for any bigger carpentry projects in future. Thanks for saving my hide! Now I won't have to present the new husband+wife with an I.O.U. as a gift.

It is hard to find reliable trades people that will show up, provide a reasonable quote and complete a smaller job without hassle. Marc did all three. He was easy to work with and provided valuable suggestions when discussing our project. I would recommend him for your carpentry needs.

I am the owner of a custom millwork and furniture shop. I have been in finish carpentry at all levels for 38 years, Jordan was and is one of the most talented craftsmen I have ever worked with. His "get it right" attitude is just one of his most valuable assets. I have often wished he still lived in Arkansas so we could work together again.

None of the other options responded as fast as Carpentry Solutions. The others responded with the basic email reply but Ricardo was ready to come and analyze, estimate, and get to work. Also the other options were not including caulking or painting for my wainscot and crown molding. Carpentry Solutions was a one-stop shop and it was completed in 2 days. Great job and thanks!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
