I would definitely hire Victor again. He did a great job on rewiring my garage door and installing a light. He came in person to provide me an estimate and was able to do the job next day! He arrived early and finished the work well before I expected. Also he seems like a nice guy.

Armando was a pleasure to do business with! He responded quickly to any messages/questions I had, arrived on time, and did a wonderful job on our garage floor! In fact, we've already passed along his contact information to 2 friends who are interested in having him do some work! We'll definitely hire him again!

Raul painted my livingroom, including the popcorn ceiling. He was professional and very friendly as well as knowledgeable. He repaired drywall damage and also painted doors adjoining the livingroom, which I didn't expect. He is prompt and courteous. His work is excellent and he will be doing much more painting for me in the future.

He was great to work with and did an excellent job! He came to a rental property I owned and pressure washed the driveway, walkway and front door area. His brother also changed out 3 ceiling fans for us. He is very pleasant and a very hard worker, not to mention it was over 95 degrees that day!

I hired Mr. Byrd and his crew to do some interior painting, pressure wash house and decks, and repair rotten door frame. His initial response for a price quote and scheduling was very good and he underbid another home repair contractor and that was good. Overall Mr. Byrd and his crew did a very nice job on the interior painting on walls which were badly stained by cigarette smoke over the years. However, I should have known better than to go to work and leave a check expecting the work to be completed, but I didn't really have a choice that day. The back door frame that was repaired badly needed a second coat of paint. Also, when pressure washing the front deck floor they chipped the paint of the bottom of the deck rails. I called Mr. Byrd and told him about this. He told me that he would come back early the next week. That's been 2 weeks ago and I've not heard anything else from him. I have a realtor coming in to look at the house next week so I guess I'll have to make these corrections myself. Although these are small things, I feel he should make it right since he's been paid for the job. Mr. Byrd has come back to correct the issues that were pending. Apparently, he thought that someone in his crew had come back to do this, but they had not done so. Everything looks very good now.

My newly licensed daughter drove through the garage door almost knocking down a support column for the roof. Ron and his brother and son had to reconstruct the entire structure and refinish it to conform with the rest of the house. Before the reconstruction, they needed to build a temporary support for the second floor and roof. Ron and his "crew" did the entire job in two days. The new column is much stronger than the original and is practically imposible to tell the difference from the rest of the house. I was kept informed of what they were doing every step of the way. Their easygoing way and very personable manner makes them a real pleasure to deal with. Additionally, not only were they the lower of the three bids that I received for the repair, but they started the job within 36 hours of agreeing to the repair. Fair price, timely repair, excellent workmanship and very nice people, resulted in a good ending to what was otherwise a disastrous situation. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

It's not often I find enough reasons to rate a company with 5 stars but Painting Solutions earned this review with outstanding work and professionalism! My family moved from PA to NC and we contracted Mike's company prior to relocation. He was to paint the entire interior of the home. 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, LR, DR, Kitchen, foyers and stairwell. All ceilings, 6-panel doors, exterior doors, trim and windowsills. His rates were extremely reasonable. We were also able to pick out our colors at a local Sherwin Williams store in PA and email them to Mike in advance of our move. Our closing date changed numerous times but Mike was understanding and still able to start prepping the home the day we finally closed and while we unloaded the moving truck. His attention to detail was overly impressive. His lines are perfectly straight & clean. His work ethic was unmatched by any other contractor I have ever used. His crew was clean, courteous and did a phenomenal job. I would recommend their services to ANYONE! We had new vinyl plank flooring installed once Mike completed the 2,000 sq. foot job. Mike then returned and finished the baseboards and quarter round. Not a drop of paint ever hit the new floors. Just a spectacular painter as you can see from the images! My wife and I were so happy with the outcome of this job, we contracted Painting Solutions again to paint the wooden exterior portion of our home. Can't wait to post another 5-star review once finished! If you are in need of a painter; PLEASE look to Mike for your job. I promise you wont be disappointed.

I have had the pleasure of working with Optimal Painting on two projects. First, we had them remodel the kitchen, paint, and install a double vanity in our rental condo. We also had them install some tile in our laundry room and paint some beds and baths at our private residence. We were very pleased with the quality of their work and the level of professionalism. The overall job was excellent!!

We wanted an enclosed deck built to replace the existing one. From start to finish Manuel demonstrated a willingness and commitment to make sure we were satisfied with the quality of the job. As part of his business practice he gave an honest and very fair cost estimate and made adjustments to accommodate our budget. At the completion of the project I referred Manuel to a friend who is interested in having a similar project completed at his home. We will also have Manuel come back in less than two months to complete another project which will include rebuilding the brick steps leading to the front door.

The guys over at Hanson Overhead helped me out tremendously. One of the springs broke late in the evening and the owner came over to help me get the car out of the garage at no cost. They sent a very knowledgeable and professional technician over the next morning to replace my broken spring. Great prices, the tech was on time, and they cleaned up when they left. I highly recommend using Hanson Overhead of Raleigh for garage door problems.

My garage door was acting up for nearly a month despite having been repaired twice by another provider. A friend called a technician from this company to assess my door. He advised that replacing the door opener would have solved the problem completely. I have not had any door issues for the last eight months. He did a clean job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
