Last May we replaced our HVAC system and duct work. We noticed a ton of rust on the old duct work that came out of the crawl space, coupled with continued sweating from HVAC ducts causing small puddles to accumulate during warmer months. The original vapor barrier was in bad shape and there was also the beginnings of mold build up on some of the floor joists. We did our fair share of research, and know others that had similar work done in recent months with comparable equipment. After reading several great reviews about Cleaner Crawl Space, we decided to have CCS replace our vapor barrier (used 12mm), install a dehumidifier ( Santa Fe) seal up foundation vents, and very minor mold remediation. The installation team was extremely professional, completed the work in one day, and came back the following week to adjust one sealed area that needed a little touch up. I highly recommend this company. Patrick and team were a pleasure to deal with.See more

I called Structure Pros because they were offering free crawl space inspection. They came out and I showed them the interior of the home and pointed out the sagging / uneven floors and told them I was noticing a musty odor. They went under to inspect crawl space. They informed me that the sagging floors were due to the floor joists being overspanned and undersized. They suggested jacking floors and installing concrete footings, with steel jacks supporting the load bearing beam. They explained that the musty odor was a result of moisture in crawl space and suggested I have a crawl space vapor barrier installed with a french drain around the perimeter and to make sure to keep foundation vents open for proper crawl space ventilation. I told them that whatever we decide to do I wanted permanent crawl space solutions, because my home was in historic downtown Wilmington and I intended to retire there in Wimingtons historic district. Then they suggested crawl space encapsulation, explained it was basically a sealed crawl space and suggested with a crawl space dehumidifier it was the best system for permanent crawl space solutions. They installed the floor jacks, load bearing beam and steel adjustable floor jacks. With a pier and beam system. They proceed to encapsulated crawl space. and install dehumidifier. I was very pleased with their work, the squeaky flores were repaired. There was no more crawl space moisture, it was great crawl space solutions. I am very happy with Structure Pros quality crawl space repair and they threw in a pump basin in case I ever had problems to water intrusion in a storm that sump pump installation would be quick and easy and that if I covered the sump pump cost they would come back and install sump pump. I would gladly refer friends and family to Structure Pros crawl space and foundation repair in Wilmington nc. Thanks!See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
