Victor got in touch with me last night within 30 minutes of my request. He set up an appointment and was here promptly at 8:30am. He listened as i explained what the lights, fuses, and breakers were doing in this old house. He went to work right away with skilled expertise. My concerns were eased within an hour and my problems were solved. As a single senior citizen, i found great comfort in his explanations of my problem and his advice. Not one time did i feel uneasy or concerned having him in my home. He was courteous, patient, and willing to go above and beyond what i asked. His knowledge of my issues was tremendous as well as his calm approach while i was having a major melt down concerning my fuses and breakers. I have used many large electricial companies in this city.....and will NEVER use them again. Victor and his company will be the only ones i call from this day on. I have recommended him to my friends and family and even posted on social media about my positive experience with this company. Thanks to Thumbtack i was put in touch with an outstanding electrician. Rocky Mount has an honest, dependable, knowledgeable electrician we can be very proud of. Lynn Price

My wife and I bought a house 3 years ago with a severely sloped (virtually unusable) backyard. From the beginning we had a vision of terracing it with a retaining wall and creating a beautiful and useable backyard. When we sent this job out to bid on Thumbtack I had several companies come out and from the first time we met Rob I had a great feeling about him. Rob is a TRUE professional and takes care and pride in his work. You really get the sense that he treats every job as if he was doing the work at his own home. He went above and beyond what we asked of him and even my wife (who is unbelievably picky and detail oriented) could only find wonderful things to say. Not only was he fair in his pricing, diligent and timely in his work, but he communicated his plan every step of the way. To top it off I live in a neighborhood with lots of "concerned" neighbors and I got rave reviewed from the people on my street of how kind, professional and personable Rob and his employees were. I will absolutely call Rob next time we have work and already am planning on the next project! Thank you Rob!!!!

Restoration 1 responded very quickly and showed up the same day. After looking at the situation, they recommended that I could easily pull the floor up a bit to allow it to dry out, and probably didn't need them to do any work. After 2 days, their recommendation was spot on and the floor was fine. That was very professional of them to make a recommendation where they didn't get the job, because the customer could take care of it. I will definitely go back to Restoration 1 in the future for any restoration needs.

We hired Stephen of Rejuvenate Restorations & Co. to replace some rotting window frames and sills. He offered what I thought was a fair price, and, in addition, offered to repaint my other window frames, also for a fair price. He and his partner were courteous, punctual, and thorough. I have no complaints about the work at all; it looks great. I would definitely hire them again and probably will. Highly recommended!

Todd Harris, was fantastic. He arrived within the hour of me reaching out, he reviewed the damage, took me through the whole process of what it would be like, and he has a lot of experience working with Insurance companies so that made it easier to manage. Thanks, Todd and David.

Lux Contracting has the quickest response to any question or inquiry from the beginning. That professionalism follows thru to the work. Trey did a restoration job on an apartment for us. He removed and reinstalled practically everything. Ceilings and walls. The entire kitchen and bathrooms were gutted. The sheetrock work was amazing and clean. We could not decide which flooring or cabinets we wanted or what would be a good value. Trey helped with finding the right products. He taught us what to look for and gave direction when we were out of our element. Trey gave us a schedule of the work and finished ahead of time. The quality of the workmanship is outstanding. We called him for an odd job of turning a roof with 4 posts into a garage. When he finished, it looked like it was meant to be exactly what it is. The plumbing and electrical was unimaginable but Trey smiled and said he could make it work and make it work correctly. Again the work was amazingly outstanding. Trey is my first and only call when we need anything constructed or even completed. We have started finishing the 2nd for of our house and just stopped. The job was slightly more than we wanted to take on ourselves. Trey came in, took over, corrected a mistake or 2 and finished it in record time. AMAZING!!

Craig was outstanding in repairing my leaks and rotted floor in my bathroom. He was on time, fixed several things that were not on my list and the work was top notch! I have already requested estimates on other projects and have referred him to friends. He will be my "go to" contractor for all my repair work!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
