We needed electrical work to support a larger project ongoing at the house. Victor quickly responded to our request, was on time, worked well with our other contractors, and did a great job. He was flexible as the electrical job evolved - based on other contractor activities - and communicated with me proactively about his plan, the change to the budget etc. We have followup work ahead and will definitely use him.

Ron and his guy installed two light fixtures and three ceiling fans for me. They did a great job! Were very responsive, on time, and the work was great. One of the ceiling fans needed further adjustment, so he came back and fixed it no problem. Our regular contractor wanted to charge four times what Ron did. I am thrilled to have such great work available at such a reasonable price. Thanks, Ron!

This was without a doubt one of the best experiences I've had with a contractor. I had work done to remove a large fallen tree branch and repair of the fence that it crashed through, as well as deck repair including replacing a rotting deck post. Jaime got back to me almost immediately after my thumbtack request, came out the next day for an estimate, and completed all the work a few days after that. He was very easy to work with and he even fixed a few other things I noticed while he was there working. I would highly recommend him for your job.

Santiago repaired drywall in my garage and painted the entire downstairs of my home. He not only was very easy to deal with but also took every aspect of the job seriously. Being in the service business I know what it means to deliver on your clients expectation and Santiago exceeded mine. He completed the project a day faster than what he estimated with a price that was very reasonable for the work performed. If you are looking for someone that has experience in all aspects of construction without the big contractor feel, this is the guy to hire.

I value professionalism when I hire help around the house. As a young female professional, it’s important to me that I can trust my contractor to be honest, reliable, and excellent in their field. For all those reasons, Miguel and his brother Jesus were truly a pleasure to work with. I needed to replace dates light fixtures in my kitchen with 4 recessed can lights. Before I ordered the parts we needed online, Miguel confirmed I chose the correct items and also he helped me find the same items for a cheaper price. Furthermore, they were most affordable because they only charged me for labor compared to other companies that would only quoted me a set price. They were punctual and easy to schedule on a Friday afternoon, and they efficiently finished the job in 1.5 hours. Plus, they are nice people with 10 years of experience, and for these reasons, I would be happy to use their company again for any electric work.

Bill did a great job replacing some sheetrock that had some water damage in our storage shed. He was fast to respond and gave a fair quote. He was able to complete the repairs shortly after hiring him; he and his coworker Mike knocked it out in less than 2 hours. And he is a licensed contractor to boot! We would highly recommend Bill and would hire him again.

I hired Dan to install a new, permitted, 550sqft freestanding deck. Dan did an excellent job and was very easy to deal with. He showed up every day at the time he communicated, which is not typical of contractors. The project turned out to be much larger than we both anticipated, but Dan stood by the initial estimate on which we shook hands.

Dave and team did an outstanding job replacing our master bath shower! The job entailed ripping out the old shower, replacing / updating some of the plumbing, a tear-down and replace of some sheetrock to ensure the new shower hit correctly and installing the shower base, enclosure and shower door! All done to perfection! I would not hesitate to work with Dave and his team on any future work I needed done!

Arthur does amazing work. Period. He is without a doubt one of the most qualified guys in his field, he is personable and friendly to be around, and his work really speaks for itself. I hired him for 3 days of work finishing my garage, and I’m happy to say his work product in the garage even looks better than the inside of my house does! We are calling him back for 10 more days of work as soon as he is available, if you have not hired him or are considering to hire him, he is a great value, no bullshit, honest contractor who delivers what he says he will, and to a quality standard that puts other contractors to shame.

Shoun does great work. This work was originally slated to be just scraping the popcorn texturing, refinishing and painting our kitchen ceiling. It has since expanded to a dining room, entry ways and a half bathroom. Shoun arrived when he said he would, is friendly, and clearly has popcorn removal down to a science. He is also a perfectionist, which was fantastic for us, as it left us with pristine ceilings that look brand new. He and Kelly were both very easy to communicate with. I can't recommend Shoun and Masterpiece Signature any more highly. I wish working with every contractor was as easy as it is to work with Shoun. We will definitely have him back to complete the popcorn texture removal throughout the rest of our house and probably at our rental property as well. It's so good to have found such a great contractor. Thanks Shoun and Kelly!

Ernesto does great work. I have a long list of contractors I would never use again, Ernesto is definitely not one of them. He shows up when he says, works all day, and doesn't leave a job until it's finished. I will definitely use Ernesto for any drywall needs in the future.

Bill replied to our initial request to build a small portico roof over our front door. We had some ideas in mind, but appreciated Bill's honesty that some of our plans may not be best for our house. He worked with us to come up with a better plan, and we could not be happier with it. Since we were impressed with him, we asked him to do other repairs from our inspection report. Bill was hard working, honest and did a thorough job. We will definitely contact him again if needs arise!

Santiago is a great painter who I found through my contractor. I will call Santiago again in the future because we have been so impressed by the quality of his work. He is trustworthy, he is always on time, and he has a very pleasant personality. You can't go wrong with hiring him!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
