Handy Dandy Services pressure washed my home and back deck. They showed up 15 minutes early, were very personable, and did a great job. They used a low pressure system to not damage my siding or wood, I will definitely use them again in the future.

SES Remodeling installed engineered hardwoods in my foyer and closet when Empire could not fulfill my contract due to a crack in my slab. This was going to be a tile project as I thought tile was my only option. Sergio and Leo said the crack was repairable and engineered hardwoods were doable. Now I have the beautiful wood floors I wanted from the start. I would hire them again. Sergio, Leo, and Augustina were a delight to work with.

I had contacted Trell's over 4 weeks before the move and made for them to be at my residence around 9 am. When they were not there by 9:15 I called them. At that time I was informed that they were running behind in their move schedule because of weather and that they would not be able to get to my address until either late that afternoon or the following morning. This was just NOT acceptable to me considering that we had confirmed a date and time weeks before. Trell's did make arrangements to have a truck and crew at my residence and they showed up at 10:30 am. Once there, the worked hard and got me moved over to my new address on time. One little incident did happen. While bringing in a love seat they hit the door jam and took a piece of wood out of the door jam which I will now have to repair. Nothing got broken during the move. This was my second time using Trell's and I am also planning on using them again in a couple of weeks to help unload a truck after I move a friend coming from Texas.

Raul responded immediately to my request which was orginially just for repairs to my ceiling. When he arrived I showed him a few other things I need help with at my house - painting my deck, pressure washing my house, fixing my shed door, and helping repair rotten wood at my front door. Raul was always prompt to do the repairs and did an amazing job for a great price. Would highly recommend

My mother and I are very pleased with the work done by Sawyer Home Services. He went above and beyond the call in power washing our home. He was willing to re-do a small portion at no extra charge and to add a section of property for a nominal fee. I took a before and after photo of the concrete and patio furniture because you wouldn't believe it if you didn't see it. Job well done! Thank you Sawyer.

Roberto did excellent work and I am so glad to have found a knowledgeable and trusty handyman for future projects! He spent a whole day at my house installing 3 light fixtures, installing new blinds for several windows, putting up shelves, and putting together and installing a complicated new sink faucet. He worked very efficiently but took his time to do the job right, going above and beyond to make sure things worked/looked properly. Would highly recommend Roberto!

Tim and his crew have now completed 2 jobs for us at our property. The first was to finish installing vinyl shutters and do extensive plaster work on the ceiling of our garage where there was water damage. The second was to do a number of smaller projects related to dog and use damage, from replacing a window sill and baseboards, to installing new wood floor transitions, grout repair and recaulking a shower upstairs. Without exception all of this work was completed to the letter of what we had asked. It was also done in a much quicker manner and more professional manner than my wife or I could have accomplished. Tim was also very responsive with both e-mail and phone communication, and the price was also fantastic. I would highly recommend them for any project you might have as we've been very happy with them on both of our projects.

Exterior siding/trim boards replaced. John replaced rotting wood siding, corner boards, and window sills and a front post holding my roof up over my front porch. Work performed was excellent, he cleaned everything up perfectly. Weather was horrible, probably the worst weak of the year because it was so cold, he still did what he could when it wasn't raining or snowing. Weather caused delays, out of his control. I would definitely hire him again and would recommend him to anyone looking for home repair.

Michael was very responsive from the beginning and continued with that responsiveness through completion of the project. He did a great job replacing several window panes and was professional and courteous throughout the process .... Glass is expensive and I hope I don't need glass services again BUT if I do, he will definitely be the first person I reach out to .... :-)

Alex and his team replaced our home's large bathroom window that was damaged by a storm. Alex was great at communication, gave me several options for replacement, and negotiated on cost. He followed up with status updates several times, kept his scheduled install date, and finished the install in just a few hours. I'd definitely recommend his company for home work related to windows.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
