We hired a 6-person crew and two trucks to move us from our packed 10x25 storage unit to our new home 12 miles away. They called 30 minutes before the 8am scheduled start to confirm they were on the way. At 8 am they met us at the storage unit and 2 1/2 hours later were done unloading the last item in the house. They finished several hours earlier than the estimated time so a good price became a great price for a hard-working professional moving crew.

We had some heavy pieces of furniture moved from a storage unit to 2 separate locations, and the 3 movers were so pleasant and did a great job! I would definitely call Marla again and recommend Get It Home Movers to all my friends and family.

We moved to Greensboro from near the coast into a 3rd floor apartment. Mike and Dom from American met us there and went right to work. We definitely gave them a challenge with a 24-foot Budget truck to unload! In fact, it took 4+ hours to move everything, most upstairs to our apartment, and the rest across town into a storage unit. They busted tail and got the job done, with no problems. They interacted well with my family (including my 3 boys racing around), and saw the job through to the end. I would definitely recommend American Moving and Hauling, and have no problem using them again in the future. Also, kudos to Mike and Dom for keeping us entertained with their lighthearted banter while doing a really tough job. Thanks guys!

They were very careful and moved quickly. We made a stop at a storage unit and they moved me onto a 3rd floor. Everything was included in the price with no extra fees. Really nice guys!

My husband and I hired Bellhops Moving to help us move 3 heavy pieces of furniture. Bellhops recommended using 3 movers which worked out perfectly. The guys arrived ~10 before our scheduled move time which was really nice. They didn't waste any time, were very polite, and very helpful. They had a positive attitude the whole time and completed the move successfully. We recommend using Bellhops Moving for your move.

Tyree and his helper did an excellent job helping me to move items from my home into storage. I called them on a Wednesday and was able to schedule a Friday appointment for the same week!! The were careful with my furniture, covered all the glass and hardwood surfaces, and worked to not scratch up my walls. I will definitely use their services again

Faith and Glory movers provided a very professional, quality moving experience and treated my items with extreme care. They were very pleasant and communicated idealy. Moving from a 2nd floor apartment across town to a 3rd floor apartment was not an easy task, but they handled it with ease and precision! Great values and highly recommended!

There was a hiccup in scheduling initially, but, once that was worked out, everything went great. The moving crew was professional and knew just how to move a 600lb piano down stairs that included a twist at the bottom. I would recommend Ahlgrens for moving pianos and other big furniture. The value could not be beat.

These guys are amazing! The crew worked very hard, took very good care of our items (wrapped well for storage) and were on time & pleasant to work with. They did such an amazing job that we hired them again to move the items from storage to our new house end of this month. Highly recommend.

Moved from a three story to a smaller two story with some of our possessions going into storage at a different location. These guys worked hard (lots of heavy items down and up steps) and completed the job in a very reasonable time. They took great precaution to protect items and no items were damaged in the move. Our stored items were packed tightly and efficiently.

This was a move from a 4 Bedroom house to another house in the Charlotte area. I have always moved myself with the help of friends. But since getting older this is no longer an option. I have to admit that I was very hesitant to have a moving company move me, as I have seen many news segments about various moving scams. The news show "60 Minutes" did a story on this subject. Thankfully "Road Haugs" is not one of THOSE companies. They are professionals. My move was on time and went very smoothly. Should I have the need to relocate again, "Road Haugs" will be the company I will turn to.

We had a great experience with Cori this morning. We hired him to move an extremely large and heavy piece of furniture out of an upstairs bedroom for us. He arrived a little early and took such great care while completing the job. He was careful, wrapped the piece to protect it, put down moving blankets to protect our floors, and was skilled at moving a large piece through a small space. He was very professional and exceeded all my expectations for this project. If we need a moved in the future or a friend was to ask for a recommendation, I would absolutely contact Cori for a future job. Thank you!

The Taurus brothers moved me to two locations, to my storage facility and then my new home. They were professional, courteous and fastidious. The took great care to care for my belongings, especially my brand new sectional sofa. They actually finished the job sooner than expected. I would highly recommend them. Erica R.

I agree with other reviewers that there is a bit of a disconnect in the office and my estimate was significantly off from my final price. There is also a bit of excessive overwrapping but I can understand why for a long distance move. Rose and Jennifer worked to ensure my final price was closer to the estimate and within my budget. William in logistics ensured the truck arrived within the timeframe I needed for a very specific and tight move due to a work start date. I would say what makes Great Nation great are the moving crews. Eric ran my pick up and did an excellent job securing my items and documenting everything that was loaded into the truck. Fred and Carlos went out of their way to ensure my delivery came on a specific day that was out of their time range. They were pleasant and worked extremely hard even though it was probably an inconvenience for them. Fred was on the crew for my pick up and was familiar with my items and my moving situation and just an absolute pleasure to work with. Even though there were a few hiccups I still 100 percent recommend Great Nation if you are looking for a fast and efficient move with great movers who care. A lot of long distance companies want you to wait weeks for your items. For a NJ to FL move I had my move completed in 4 days. I would definitely use Great Nation again in the future and would say any issue I experienced would happen with any other company. I called after another moving company bailed on me 2 days before my move. Great Nation was able to jump in and coordinate my move, deal with my high stress level, and make sure all issues were handled to my satisfaction. A+++

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
